Creating a bas-relief on the wall with your own hands: a master class. Bas-relief from putty for beginners

All about grapes

When decorating the interior of a dwelling, modeling on the wall would be a good solution. Despite the large number of plaster and plastic products for wall decoration, artistic modeling is still relevant. Such a finish is not very difficult and can be easily done independently. This article will discuss how to do it yourself on the wall and what materials can be used for this.

Preparatory procedures

Even the most common plaster or plaster moldings will add uniqueness and elegance to the apartment. Embossed patterns can be used in the design of any room.

First you need to choose which walls will be applied to. It is extremely important to consider the lighting factor, whether the light will be natural or artificial.

The next step will be to choose a picture and a place on the wall where the modeling will be carried out.

For beginners in this craft, it is better not to tackle complex paintings.

The best solution would be images, leaves or flowers. An example of such sculpting can be seen in the figure.

You will also need to prepare the following set of tools:

  • trowel;
  • flat brush;
  • palette knife;
  • maklovitsa;
  • masking tape;
  • rubber gloves;
  • polyethylene film.

You will need a material that is used to level the surfaces.

Applying a bas-relief to the wall

Various materials can be used for sculpting. The most common option is to create a bas-relief from plaster and putty.

First you need to choose the most suitable texture. For beginners, it is better to work with and, mixed with clay. It is also best not to draw large images the first time.

A good solution would be to create a rough bas-relief on a separate tablet. For this, you can use wood or drywall.

Drawing preparation

It is necessary to choose the most drawn image. The contours are transferred to paper, and a plastic wrap is applied on top. And already on top of it an image is applied.

Preparation of the base

The base of the bas-relief is made of wax or wax. A layer of plaster is applied to the drywall sheet with a spatula, after which it is leveled.

After about 20 minutes, after the solution has hardened, the drawing is transferred to the base. The film stencil is placed on the base and the contours of the image are outlined with a pencil. A relief pattern remains on the putty coating, which will then be transferred to the wall.

Creating a drawing

This part of the job is the most important and time consuming. A specialist can quickly deal with it, but

Proper preparation surfaces are the key to success

the newbie will need more time. The essence of the procedure is to add volume to the drawn image.

The creation of a three-dimensional drawing on a wall consists of several stages. The putty is applied to parts of the image not immediately, but gradually, layer by layer.

The mortar, with the help of which the modeling is carried out, must have a high elasticity index and do not harden immediately. It is necessary to prepare a mixture of the desired consistency in advance.

Painting and fastening of the bas-relief

After the bas-relief is completely sculpted, it will need to be thoroughly dried. Sharp corners and edges are sanded. This work should be done with care so as not to remove excess.

In order for the bas-relief to take its final look, its surface will need to be primed and painted. The primer will increase the adhesion level for further painting. For decorative bas-relief most often used water-based paint... A diagram of such a procedure can be seen in the figure.

Plaster bas-reliefs

How to make plaster sculpting? This material is suitable for both professionals and beginner artisans. It will be enough to familiarize yourself with the following training video lesson to simplify the procedure.

Gypsum is mixed with PVA glue before use. This mixture externally resembles plasticine for creating separate areas of the picture. To obtain a volumetric image using such material, it will be enough to purchase the appropriate form in the store. A solution of gypsum and glue is poured into it, after which you will need to wait until it hardens. After hardening, the product is removed from the mold and attached to the desired part of the apartment.
Optimal illumination- recipe for success

Almost any image can be blinded, but plant compositions are most often chosen. A piece is broken off from the mixed gypsum, which will be required to create a separate element. The rest of the material must be wrapped in a wet cloth and stored in a plastic bag. This will prevent possible drying out of the solution.

Beginners often use the image of a bunch of grapes. To create it, you need to take a grape leaf, put it in polyethylene and circle the contours. This will create a template for further work.

After the gypsum is mixed, a small piece of material is taken and rolled out with a rolling pin, after which it is attached to the wall using a slip. The template is placed on plaster of Paris and traced around the contour. With the help of tools, excess material is removed. For these purposes, you can use both professional devices and improvised ones. First, the outline of the sheet is created, and then its middle.

For creating unique interior you can also use bas-reliefs made with the addition of artificial flowers. Flowers, in turn, can be made from fabric or paper material.

To create such a bas-relief in an apartment, you will need to dilute a solution of putty with the addition of glue in a previously prepared container. The consistency of the mixture should outwardly resemble sour cream or yogurt. The artificial flower is dipped in this solution several times. The main thing is to make sure that streaks do not appear, which can quickly dry out, and then it will be very difficult to remove them. After each dipping, there is a short pause so that the solution has time to dry a little. After the texture of the picture acquires a uniform saturation, the stage can be considered completed.

When the flowers are completely hardened, they are attached to the panel with thick alabaster. A complete composition on the entire wall is created from individual sections.

As you can see from the article, there is nothing difficult in creating bas-reliefs and this work can be done with your own hands. The main thing is to use quality materials and tools. Using the photos discussed earlier, you can choose suitable option picture. However, if you plan to sculpt complex patterns consisting of a large number parts, it is recommended to seek the help of a professional artist.

Relief is a special sculptural technique when the composition is created only partially in the form of a volumetric image on a plane. It is considered a separate subtype of art. About where the relief was first applied, no data has been preserved. It developed unevenly in Ancient Greece, India, Ancient rome, Egypt and the Far East. One of the most famous examples of relief, which has survived to this day in a partially destroyed form, is the Pergamon Altar of Zeus, now located on a museum island in Berlin.

general characteristics

The monument is a structure with a wide staircase and a colonnade, under which there is a long panoramic relief. It depicts separate groups of people, animals and giants, who have come together in battle. The relief is classified into four types:

  • Bas-relief. The sculptures protrude less than half of the flat background.
  • High relief. The sculptures go far beyond the background and sometimes even partially separate from it.
  • Counter relief. It is a negative, that is, the composition is not convex, but concave.
  • Ankryo, or koilanaglyph. On a plane (most often a wall), only the contour of the image is cut, that is, the composition is the same concave as the counter-relief, but its depth is the same everywhere. This type is considered to be more primitive. It became widespread only in Ancient Egypt.

Bas-relief in the interior simple houses used rarely before. Only very wealthy people who had real palaces at their disposal could afford it. Most often, the exteriors of houses in the Gothic style and interior decoration cathedrals and churches. V modern interiors decoration with such sculptural compositions became available. You can even create a bas-relief yourself. We will talk further about the features of such a sophisticated decor and how to make it with your own hands.

Pros and cons of bas-relief

The bas-relief is made of wood, clay, alabaster, plaster or stone. The latter method is very laborious and requires a high level of skill from the sculptor, since any mistake cannot be corrected. Bas-reliefs are made of wood by carving, and clay is the most available material which is suitable even for beginners. Modeling was still in school years... Bas-relief products, unlike ordinary sculptures, allow you to maintain a 1: 1 scale and at the same time save on materials. After all, clay, for example, for sculpting a person in full growth will require almost 60-70% less than for the creation of a similar full-fledged statue. Previously, all types of reliefs adorned walls and ceilings and at the same time remained part of them, that is, the composition was static and could not be moved. Now you can make a small bas-relief on a special canvas stand and move it around the apartment if necessary.

Volumetric compositions are invariably associated with classic styles... Indeed, such a decor would look appropriate in the design of the same name, art nouveau, modern, baroque, rococo, empire. But here we are talking about traditional sculptures, with soft lines and many small, artsy details. In the center of the composition, as a rule, people, deities, mythical creatures or complex ornaments appear. V modern style the minimalistic bas-relief will organically flow in:

  • City panorama;
  • A piece of wood;
  • Volumetric "swirls" of the fluid being shaken;
  • Imitation of an "old" layer of finish or brick under crumbling plaster.

TO nautical style suitable volumetric images of schools of fish, skates, algae, coral "fields" and fantastic panoramas of Triton's domain. Of course, a beginner will not be able to make such compositions the first time without errors. You will have to train for a long time and fill your hand. This is perhaps the main drawback of the bas-relief. It is impossible to create it beautiful without a lot of time spent on teaching the skill of a sculptor. The only exception will be abstract reliefs, which are suitable for the style of the same name or minimalism. Unlike decorative painting, bas-reliefs do not need additional highlighting with color. The backlight will perfectly highlight every line. This type of design is popular for decorating arches, fireplaces, openings and accent walls... With its help, you can competently mask surface irregularities, hide communication lines, or distort the space in an irregular room.

The bas-relief perfectly emphasizes the peculiarity of the ethnic style, regardless of which country the interior is from.

Italian motives are emphasized by vines and decorative columns or a volumetric landscape from a false window. The Japanese flavor will be complemented by a 3D sakura branch, dotted with numerous flowers, and the Chinese one - by a dragon with a grinning muzzle. Themed elephants on the walls and decorative sculptures of multi-armed Hindu deities will harmoniously flow into the house with elements traditional for India.

Preparation for work

The bas-reliefs are made by hand. Of course the market is cheap decorative elements you can buy ready-made plaster stamping, but this will not add uniqueness to the design. Before you start working on your first full-fledged composition, you need to fill your hand. It is most convenient to train on clay, plaster or plaster. The materials are plastic and, until completely dry, allow you to correct oversights. The canvas will be plywood with a low wood frame. In rare cases, you can create a composition directly on a section of a wall. This option is only suitable for those sculptors who are firmly confident in their abilities. Large-scale panoramas are also created right on the wall, which will be simply inconvenient to hang after production on separate canvases. You also need to do ahead of time standard forms for repeating elements to reduce the complexity of the process.

For example, each berry of a vine is much easier to make in molds. These elements are often made of plaster, but alabaster is considered the optimal material. We'll talk about where to get the molds a little later. Instead of a stencil, ordinary cling film will be used. First, they put it on a hard surface and draw the outline of the individual elements. Then the stencil will be applied to the composition and the same outlines will be transferred to an even soft and pliable base. Now let's get down to a short, general master class on creating a bas-relief for interior decoration.

DIY bas-relief

To make a bas-relief, you first need to prepare the base. In her role, they use "Marseilles wax" or simple plaster. With a spatula, the mixture is applied to the wall or plywood canvas. First, they are leveled, and then given a relief, if necessary (with sponges, foam rubber, crumpled bags or pieces of fabric).

The next step is to transfer the drawing from the film stencil to the prepared canvas. The picture is applied to a section of the wall or plywood and the outline of the picture is pressed into the still not completely solidified plaster. As a result, the primitive sketch is ready. Now you need to give it volume. To do this, knead the modeling mixture. Alabaster is optimal, since after complete hardening, it is not inferior in strength to concrete. But gypsum can crack, crumble and is afraid of water. Dry alabaster is mixed with water immediately before work until smooth. Then they begin to add volume to the applied pattern. This is not done immediately in one fell swoop, but gradually, layer by layer. Depressions can be made by scraping out part of the base or by applying additional "extra" layers to nearby objects. In certain places, elements already pre-made in molds are attached to the canvas. If necessary, if the mass dries quickly, but the work progresses slowly, it must be moistened with water.

When forming parts, not only tools are used, but also the sculptor's fingers. After the work is finished, it is given time to dry. Then the composition is sanded with sandpaper, removing excess layers or smoothing out roughness.

Wall mount

The problem of fixing the bas-relief to the base can be avoided by sculpting it directly on the wall. In other cases, the composition is set on liquid silicone or a special adhesive. If the relief was modular, then after fixing the joints, they are carefully rubbed with putty. It is not recommended to decorate "flimsy" drywall walls with such decor. The base material must be reliable and strong. The joints of the bas-relief and the wall are also carefully masked.
It's important to know. By the way, modular composition is convenient for beginners. If unsuccessful, any of the relief components can be replaced without harm to it.

Making a mold for plaster with your own hands

Molds or molds can be bought in stores, but their assortment is not as large as you would like. In addition, a typical mold will no longer be a unique part of the bas-relief. To make the form yourself, you will first have to make a sample of the element. The technology is the same for all materials, but consider one of the most popular recipes. For him you will need:

  • Putty;
  • Water;
  • PVA glue.

As for the proportions, then 500 gr. putties take 1 tbsp. a spoonful of glue and 100 gr. water. The mass is kneaded with the gradual addition of liquid. The result should be a material similar in consistency to tough dough or hard plasticine. The proportions may vary depending on the composition of the putty. Parts and elements are molded from the mass. In the process, you need to pay special attention to the flaws that will be passed on to the mold. The stucco moldings give time to harden. 12 hours will be enough. Then, to make the mold, take:

  • A set of self-tapping screws;
  • Pieces of plywood for assembling the box;
  • Liquid silicone.

A prefabricated box without a top is created from plywood using self-tapping screws. A sample of the element is placed in it and filled with silicone. Then the composition is given time to harden. After that, the walls of the box are unscrewed so as not to damage the shape, and a sample is fished out of its depths. The silicone mold is ready for reusable use.

You can understand the intricacies of the process, how to make a bas-relief on the wall with your own hands in free space, by combining the knowledge of the basic techniques of making it with practical training in applying liquid material and installation of finished panels on the wall. The dimensions of the working surface do not have of great importance- artistic images can be placed in small details on sections of the wall, ceiling, niches and corners that are free for viewing. The advantages of self-execution of this part of the interior are that after a detailed drawing of a standard stencil, a unique pattern is obtained.

Details and differences

Do-it-yourself decorative decoration in the form of a bas-relief on the wall will give the room an artistic volume, an original sophisticated look of the interior. The location, illumination, the selected color scheme will fill the simplest drawing with individuality and charm the viewer. That is why this type of registration of private properties is gaining more and more popularity in comparison with mass-produced topcoats.

Simplicity and style

The creation of large and complex paintings in terms of filling in details instills in beginners uncertainty in the ability to perform such hard work... You need to start mastering the technology with simple elements, and when you get a confident result, increase the scale and fineness of the lines. With a creative approach, a few simple strokes and a play of shades can create a whole picture.

The monumental paintings striking the imagination are painstakingly created and brought to the finished look by the masters by hand, even if the main components are previously cast in molds. A beginner decorator can acquire skills in working with plastic material, using the techniques of combining differences in the level of planes and a rough texture of processing, use the separation of parts that are identical in technique of execution by their contrasting coloring. By a peculiar method of counter-relief, images on empty walls are inscribed into modern urbanistic design styles.

Often, improvised bas-reliefs are used to decorate individual home furnishings: a fireplace, columns, beams, niches or openings. Placing a convex pattern in an unexpected place enlivens long-familiar walls.

The functions of such a pattern can be not only decorative. The spatial solution allows you to hide the unevenness of one or adjacent surfaces, to give an attractive appearance to strict engineering communications, to obtain specified visual effects, to create a thematic transition between zones and rooms of different style and purpose.

If you show a little imagination, using the material at hand, then even for beginners, an impromptu plot on the topic of the environment can serve as an interesting solution to the restoration of areas in need of repair.

Combining with various materials

In many cases of making a bas-relief on a wall, painting the resulting surface does not become the main element of decoration. The relief-forming material needs more protection from changes in air humidity, absorption of greasy vapors and dust.

The texture pattern is clearly visible from various angles, changing its appearance with changes in natural light and skillful placement of artificial lighting. By turning on or off point light sources, accentuation or smoothing of the perception of the bas-relief in the interior at the right time is achieved.

The choice of a volumetric image on the wall begins with an assessment of its location in terms of area, illumination and functional purpose of the room.

The bas-relief should not be "crowded" between adjacent corners, the distance to the opposite wall should allow the viewer to see the whole drawing. In narrow spaces, it is permissible to use small parts, which, by their placement on the limiting structures, do not create conditions for their mechanical damage or injuries to people passing by.

DIY manufacturing details

The desire that has taken shape - to decorate your interior with a unique composition in the free areas of the room, begins to be realized with the choice of a pattern. He will determine the next steps to bring the idea to life. Operations required for the bas-relief:

  1. Drawing up sketches of artistic elements. The pattern can consist of repeating identical shapes (1 or more types). You can combine in the allotted area many ready-made gypsum panels of different sizes, placing them in given order... Layout general plan is divided into separate sketches of each part, drawn in a 1: 1 scale for transferring to the surface being designed.
  2. Define technological features execution (panels, stencil, hand molding). To complete the picture, in any case, it will be necessary to manually finish the seams of the glued parts, draw the features of the stucco molding, clean up irregularities, and give the entire surface a given roughness.
  3. Select the main material to be used for the work (gypsum, decorative plaster, alabaster, putty). Components for work on the device of bas-reliefs do not belong to cheap varieties of such raw materials - putties, primers, adhesives for installing molded parts must be of high quality. The strength of the product should not be compromised by the use of raw materials with questionable characteristics. Execution in color requires the selection of grades of paints, additional colors, varnishes for shine and protection.
  4. Based on the location of the panel, the purposes of its installation and the desired effect, determine the need to install additional lighting sources, the number of points, work and materials required for this.
  5. Prepare tools and devices. They include both a standard set for applying and leveling putty, preparing a solution, measuring and marking, as well as special tools that create volumetric elements from thick building materials.

Many templates available on the web

The most difficult, sometimes, is to choose one of the whole variety of possible options for the future of the decorative component of the interior. All subsequent stages already depend on this decision. You can view samples and download a stencil for embodying the bas-relief you like on the sites specialized in this area:

It is not recommended to choose genre paintings, battle scenes, complex images of people, wild animals and panoramic views as your first attempt at decorating an apartment.

Repeating ornament

A suitable image for acquiring the skills of obtaining a given result for a novice master will be volumetric compositions of fruits, leaves, flowers. They can be located as separate elements, and intertwining patterns, make up a fancy tree or cover the entire array.

To begin with, you should watch the training master class of an experienced specialist who will devote to the intricacies of professional manufacture, application and processing of stucco details of the relief directly on the wall.

An example of a training video for making a simple decor:

It is not advisable to reduce the simplicity of the image of the element you like to a primitive bulge on the wall - the designation of the background or the semblance of a baguette frame will give it a complete and appropriate look.

Before starting work, the wall surface is thoroughly cleaned of old coatings, dried, treated with a primer and leveled with putty.

Castings

A separate gypsum element is made in a prepared form, and then glued in the selected place. To do this, you need the following:

  • to make a rigid box (box) with a low side according to the dimensions of the future part;
  • a volumetric form is laid on the bottom, which is covered with a film (without folds and wrinkles);
  • products with a significant thickness are reinforced by laying a wire frame in a mold;
  • according to the manufacturer's instructions, mix the solution, pour it into the mold;
  • the mixture is kept for the time set by the manufacturer until it dries completely;
  • remove the casting, grind, if necessary, the back side and ends for a snug fit to the base;
  • if the bas-relief consists of tight-fitting cast panels, then the processing of the front surface is carried out after sealing all joints with putty so that the plasterboard parts look like a single whole.

Finished parts, located at a certain distance from each other, can be connected by sculpting with arbitrary lines depicting branches or a vine.

Counter relief

In-depth bas-relief technology from decorative plaster consists in using 1 of 2 execution methods:

  • cuts of a dense mixture applied to the wall according to the pattern transferred from plastic film M 1: 1;
  • sequential build-up of layers around specified areas.

The alignment of the edges is done with a chisel, after which a general sanding is carried out.

Stencil

This method is a variant of the form that is installed directly on the base. They take a dense material and cut out sections of the pattern in it, which will be filled with plaster or other composition.

Using a stencil method, you can create both a basis for convex images and build up the sides of thin sections of in-depth (counter-relief) compositions.

Molding

The most common way to make small details in any other kind of images, as well as when making a bas-relief from putty and alabaster.

The drawing is applied with a pencil directly to the wall, large area can be split into squares for easier layout and scale.

It is not necessary to carefully draw the nuances of the whole picture; it is enough to outline the contour of the object and the main lines of the fragments depicted in this area.

Upon completion of the bas-relief, its lines are brought to perfection with a sharply honed instrument and covered with colored or white (sharpened) compositions.

People always strive to make their home unique and beautiful. And no matter how difficult it is to achieve originality in a typical apartment, there is always a way out. One of the most nontrivial and elegant solutions is creation. It seems to many novice masters that this is too difficult work, but this is not at all the case. You don't have to be an artist or sculptor to sculpt a wall panel. After watching the video with a master class on creating a bas-relief on the wall with your own hands for beginners, and getting acquainted with step by step instructions below, you can easily cope with the task.

Required materials and tools

To create a bas-relief, you will need some specific tools that can be purchased at hardware and art stores.

The list of materials and devices that will be needed for work:

  • thumbnail image;
  • polyethylene film;
  • trowel;
  • pencil;
  • marker or pen;
  • stencils;
  • gypsum or gypsum putty(you can also use clay or alabaster);
  • special primer;
  • paint brushes;
  • palette knives (special blades of different sizes, which are used to create volumetric images, can be plastic or metal);
  • sculptural hinges;
  • masking tape;
  • rubber gloves;
  • for colored bas-reliefs - color or paint of the desired shade.

Preparation

All bas-relief master classes begin with the preparation of a sketch. But the very first, preparatory step is the choice of a room and a wall where it is planned to create a volumetric composition.

  • First you need to think over the interior of the room where the bas-relief will be located. Volumetric images can be taken in any room, but most often they can be seen in living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Then you need to decide on the wall on which the bas-relief will be created. In this case, it is necessary to take into account how much space the panel will take, whether there is enough free space for it. Lighting must be taken into account, since the perception of the work depends on the light. If it is not enough, it makes sense to arrange additional illumination of the bas-relief.

USEFUL INFORMATION: How long does it take for the plaster on the walls to dry completely?

Now you can select a suitable sketch. Beginners should not immediately tackle complex multi-layered and very voluminous shapes. For gaining experience, you can limit yourself to more simple forms: leaves, flowers or fruits. You should not immediately try to complete a complex plot picture, where there are many actors... But it makes no sense to take too primitive images either: they will not look very interesting.

It is easier for beginners to work with plaster or gypsum plaster... They are flexible, keep their shape well, and quickly set.

Creating a plaster plaster bas-relief

Work on the bas-relief should begin with the preparation of an image that will be transferred to the wall.

Stage number 1. Working with a sketch

At this stage, a sketch of the bas-relief is created and transferred to the wall.

  • First, the picture is transferred to paper, which is then covered with a film on top and the outline is redrawn on it. The drawing can be outlined with a pen, marker or felt-tip pen. The most important thing is that it does not wear off. The image is ready.

  • Now the base is being prepared. A layer of acrylic putty or Marseilles wax is applied to the wall. After that, you can treat the wall with fine-grained gypsum (satengypsum), then it will not be perfectly even, and the putty will stick to it better. This will be the basis for the future bas-relief. The putty is leveled with a spatula, then the layer is allowed to dry a little.
  • When the material starts to set, after about 15–20 minutes, you can transfer your drawing to it. The film is fixed to the wall with masking tape. In this case, one edge must be left free so that it can be lifted when needed. Then the stencil on polyethylene is outlined with a pencil or other suitable object, such as the back of a brush or a stylus. The image is imprinted on the wall.

Stage number 2. Main part

Now go directly to the formation of the bas-relief. This is the longest stage, during which the image gradually becomes embossed.

  • The putty is applied layer by layer to the wall along the drawn contour.
  • Each layer is allowed to dry, and only then the next one is applied.

The putty should be moderately thick, plastic and gradually harden.

  • All the details of the bas-relief are drawn with palette knives, and in difficult places they use sculptural loops.

If the parts are very convex, then it is advisable to screw self-tapping screws into the wall, which will reinforce the structure. This will allow the bas-relief to maintain its shape and not crumble.

Stage number 3. Refinement, fixing and painting

The final stage is fixing the bas-relief and its subsequent painting.

  • The finished panel must be dried well.
  • Then you can trim the bas-relief with sandpaper, smooth out roughness and sharp corners. The important thing here is not to overdo it and not take away too much. At the same stage, all minor flaws are corrected: they cover up the cracks, cut through small details, etc.
  • The finished bas-relief is treated with a primer, and after it has dried - with paint. For putty, water-based paint is best suited.

Advice. To prevent the wall around the bas-relief from looking too flat, you can apply a layer of plaster on it, and then walk over it with a folded plastic bag or crumpled paper. The surface will immediately become textured.

Plaster bas-relief

Separately, you should analyze how to make a bas-relief on the wall with your own hands from plaster, since the technology is somewhat different. With this flexible material, which offers many options, it is convenient and easy to work with both professionals and beginners.

For sculpting volumetric parts, it is better to use a mixture of gypsum and PVA glue. In consistency, the material should resemble plasticine.

  • It is not necessary to form every detail of the bas-relief layer by layer for a long time. For most typical images, ready-made forms are produced. They can be found in specialized stores and art departments. A plaster mixture is poured into the molds and dried. The finished elements are removed from the molds and glued in the right places on the panel. Uncomplicated compositions can be completely composed of such elements.

USEFUL INFORMATION: Aligning walls without lighthouses with a do-it-yourself rule (video)

  • Some details will have to be sculpted by hand and then glued to the wall, for example, this is how grape brushes or a miniature leaf do.
  • If the parts are quite large, then it is advisable to place a wire inside the mold, which will reinforce the structure.
  • When the image is ready, all the cracks are closed. To do this, you can use both the solution itself and white sealants.
  • The finished painting is covered with a primer, thanks to which the bas-relief will not crumble and get dirty.

And again about floral bas-relief... 3 MK

Bas-relief, as a technique for obtaining volumetric images on the wall, has recently begun to gain popularity; to perform this technique when decorating their home, both professional artists are hired, and lyre-makers make interesting relief panels with their own hands. After all, even the simplest gypsum stucco molding gives the room an elegant and solemn look. If the image protrudes more than half, then it is called a high relief, and if less, then it is a bas-relief.

I don’t know how to your taste, but in my opinion the more natural, the less smoothed and asymmetrical the wall bas-relief will be, the more aesthetically pleasing and elegant it will integrate into your interior. And unpainted bas-reliefs look much more impressive due to the play of shadows than painted ones, even if they were covered with gilding!

The inspirational factor in making the bas-relief by hand is that your design will turn out to be unique, even if a stencil is used, because you are not yet a professional craftsman and do not have a recognizable style!
You can do the bas-relief yourself different ways: sculpt along the outline of the sketch:

or vice versa "plaster" by template.

Painted reliefs somehow look unnatural....

In monochrome it is more elegant:

How to make a bas-relief using a stencil

To make a bas-relief using a stencil, without having any skills and experience in such work, it is necessary to study all the subtleties and features of its use.
For a start, you can practice on a small drywall board, and then start decorating the walls.

A stencil can be purchased at any hardware store by choosing the drawing you like. You can also make it to order in the workshop or make it yourself, but first you need to decide on the pattern - the image should be moderately complex, but not primitive.

A stencil is used to apply an additional layer on a flat wall surface, which will serve as a protruding pattern. You can draw a stencil pattern yourself or find a suitable pattern on the Internet and print it. If the selected pattern is too large, you can glue it piece by piece with tape.

The most durable material should be chosen for making a stencil. Plastic is best. In order to transfer the selected pattern to plastic, you need to use copy paper. If the plastic is transparent, then the drawing can be placed under it, and then circle along the contour. To prevent the drawing from moving during transfer, it should be attached with tape. The stencil is cut out so that no burrs and cuts remain on it, as the pattern may be damaged. Cut lines must be clear and straight.

Preparatory work with the wall

Before starting work on the wall, markings should be made. This is necessary so that the pattern can be evenly applied to the surface. The stencil for bas-reliefs is used only once, so you should immediately prepare several templates with a pattern.
To secure the template to the wall, you can use a variety of adhesives that must be attached to the back of the stencil. It can be masking tape or glue, which is very convenient to use in such work. After the glue is applied to the template, it is applied to the wall and held until it is firmly attached.
Priming the surface is not a necessary process, but it will not be superfluous either. When working with putty, it is always recommended to use a primer, therefore, it should cover the section of the wall to which the bas-relief will be attached with a solution. After covering with a primer, the wall should dry well.

Bas-relief application

It is recommended to use a fine-grained putty for applying a three-dimensional pattern. It looks like a viscous paste and goes through a fraction of this work perfectly. The putty can be bought ready-made or you can dilute the dry mixture yourself with water to the desired consistency. The putty is applied to the stencil, covering it completely. Each layer of such a solution must be well compacted.

Remove the template from the bas-relief only follows when the plaster is completely dry and hardened. To remove the stencil from the wall, you need to smoothly pull it towards yourself and gradually detach it slowly.

If the pattern is not even enough, then after complete drying, its edges can be sanded with sandpaper. This process is more clearly shown in the video MK (but in my opinion, the contours of the plant in Julia Bykovskaya look very symmetrical and unnatural)

RELIEF SCULPTURE ON THE CONTOUR:

The essence of the process is to add volume to the painted leaves or flowers. A volumetric composition on the wall is created in several steps. The putty is applied to certain areas of the drawing not immediately, but gradually, layer by layer.

Sculpting technique plaster bas-reliefs was described in detail in the post HERE:

I give below a small lesson with tips.

From the number of pre-selected images, you need to take the most clearly drawn version. The outline of a leaf or flower must be transferred to paper. Then a transparent film is applied on top. And already from above the image is transferred to it.

The contour can be traced with a pencil or helium pen so that it does not wear off.

Any idea finds the beginning of its embodiment in a pencil sketch. Our Flower is no exception.

Based on this scheme, we drew a sketch at a scale, where all proportions were preserved.
Tracing paper with a sketch for masking tape was fixed to the wall prepared for this. And the preparation consists in the fact that it must be leveled and plastered.

The drawing is translated by tracing it using carbon paper.

For further work, we needed: about 2.5 kg of well-mixed sculptural clay (it should be soft, but not sticky to the fingers), stacks, a knife, a column brush, a brush, a bristle, a rolling pin, two containers - one for water, the other - for slip. You also need to prepare a slip on which we will glue the fragments of the relief. Slip is nothing more than the same clay, brought to the consistency of liquid sour cream. We use ordinary water as a thinner. You can add PVA glue there (by about a third, however, this is not strict). The clay itself must be wrapped in a damp cloth and placed in a plastic bag so that it does not dry out.

In our case, we started sculpting from the top left edge. Although, in fact, it was necessary to start from the central part, where the most massive and multi-layered fragments will be. All this in order to optimize the drying process. After all, it is more desirable to apply the next layer to the dried one. But we had time to stretch out the pleasure.

It is necessary to separate from the whole piece of clay exactly as much as is required to form a fragment. Try to hide excess pieces in a bag right away. Do not make the elements too bulky, so that when you transfer them to the wall, they will not fall apart.

All stucco elements can be divided into 3 main types: flagella or sausages, layers and balls. Everything else is derived from them. Therefore, before sculpting a fragment, determine for yourself what kind of view it will be. The layers are rolled out with a rolling pin, and everything else - by hand. Smear the area on which you intend to glue the fragment with a slip, use a bristle brush. Only when the fragment has adhered well enough, smooth it around the entire perimeter without leaving any gaps.

Use your fingers, stacks or even a rolling pin to give the mass the desired shape, work out the details. If necessary, smooth the relief with a core brush dipped in water.

Match the next fragment with the previous one so that no joints are visible. Do not leave a non-ironed area for a long time, the clay dries up and then the unprocessed part will have to, perhaps, be cut and polished.

Step by step - and the relief is molded.

Leave it to dry for one week naturally. At high humidity and at low temperatures, the process slows down. Accordingly, it can be accelerated by increasing the temperature and lowering the humidity.

When the work is dry, sand it with fine sandpaper. Before painting, prime it with a solution of PVA glue with water (50%). Wait until it is completely dry. Then you can tint in any color. In our case, we used a spray gun, because the brush leaves marks. If desired, again after complete drying, go over all surfaces with acrylic varnish (glossy or matte).
