Planting winter garlic when you need to plant garlic in the fall. Planting garlic before winter when and how it is right

Conifers in garden design

It is important for the farmer and summer resident to know: when to plant winter garlic - at what time, at what distance, at what depth. How to determine the exact time of planting, subtleties, nuances - agronomists advise, experienced farmers recommend.

When to plant garlic in autumn:

It takes 34-40 days for the root system to form 12 to 18 roots 5-10 cm long. Planting time winter garlic- 2-3 weeks before the onset of frost: the teeth should have time to take root, but not germinate.

The timing of planting garlic depends on three factors:

  • soil temperature + 10 ... + 7 ° C;
  • no night frosts with t not lower than -10 ° C;
  • the soil should not be too wet so that it is possible to plant garlic both by hand in the country and in the field using mechanized equipment.

Late planting of garlic in late October-early November, adjusted for the region, is fraught with low germination: the cloves that did not have time to take root die.

Advice! Winter garlic not planted in autumn can be planted in spring.

Depending on the variety, during spring sowing, the cloves will form a bulb not differentiated into cloves - the so-called. one-tooth onion. Cold storage at t -5 ... + 5 ° C and early dates landing.

Preparing the soil for planting winter garlic using a wide-row method.

Estimated time frames vary by region. Winter garlic in the Moscow region is planted from September 15-20 to the first decade of October, in the Kostroma region - until mid-October inclusive, in the South Urals - until October 5-10. Given climate change and warmer autumn, the timing may shift. If you ask the older generation, they will answer clearly: until the Intercessions, which signify the arrival of winter, have come - October 14.

On the personal plot a possible planting pattern between rows is observed from 45-40 to 30-35 cm.In comparison with commercial areas, it is possible to reduce the distance between the rows by increasing the distance in a row: 25 cm x 12 cm, 30 x 10 cm.

When to plant garlic before winter and how - agronomists advise.

The planting scheme of winter arrowhead garlic with different weights of a clove for large areas is as follows:

  • for large cloves weighing 6-9 g - 45 cm × 70-10 cm with a feeding area of 35-45 cm2;
  • for an average mass of 5-7 g - 45 cm × 7 cm with a feed area of 300-320 cm2;
  • for small 2-3 g - 45 x 5 (up to 220 cm2 per plant);
  • for very small ones up to 1.5 g 45 cm × 3 cm (up to 140 cm2).

Why all these numbers? To determine the required number of cloves in terms of weight per unit area.

So, when planting medium-sized cloves with a feed area of 320 cm2: divide 10,000 m2 by 0.0320 m2 and get 312,500 pieces.

To determine the mass of garlic per hectare: multiply the average weight by the quantity: 312,500 × 4-5 g = 1406 kg per hectare. The sowing rate for large cloves can be up to 2000 kg / ha.

Important! Taking into account the scales, the bottom and part of the arrows, the amount of garlic per hectare increases by 5-7%.

The optimal planting pattern for industrial areas, farm plantings will be a tape two-row planting pattern - 45 cm between rows (double rows) and 20 cm between double rows, as well as a wide-row method - with a row spacing of 40-45 cm.

The planting density with the first method will be about 380,000, with the second - about 270,000 plants per 1 ha.

For mechanized care and cleaning in industrial areas, a four-row planting scheme is also practiced (with a main row spacing of 54 cm, and 27 cm - four narrow ones). A row planting of winter garlic will give good results - with row spacing of 30-40 cm.

The feeding area of one plant is from 80-100 to 360 cm2, depending on the variety, size of the clove, agricultural technology, soil climatic conditions.

Distance in a row

The distance in the row depends on the size of the clove. So, winter garlic is usually larger than spring garlic (up to 2-3 g), and requires a longer distance: from 6-10 to 12 cm.With a wide-row method (45 × 7), the optimal feeding area will be up to 320 cm2.

Two-row scheme for planting winter garlic.

Important! An increase in planting density leads to a decrease in gross yield, while improving product quality due to more large bulbs.

At the same time, the sowing rate of air seeds (bulbs) of garlic per 1 running meter of a row of 55-60 bulbs at a weight rate of about 50 kg / ha, depending on the caliber.

Planting depth

To what depth to plant garlic - there are many opinions. The correct answer is that the depth depends on the size.

Winter garlic is sown to a depth of 7-8 cm and up to 10-12 cm, depending on the size of the bulbs: medium specimens are buried by 7-8 cm, large ones - by 10-12 cm, small ones - by 3-5 cm. Soil layer above teeth should not be less than 3-4 cm.

Important! On light sandy loam soils, it should be planted at a greater depth due to the faster freezing of soils with a light texture. At the same time, a decrease in t to -12 ... -14 ° C in the bottom zone can become critical and lead to freezing.

Collection of winter garlic.

Correct fit is a lengthy question. It is worth noting a few nuances and bad advice.

About soaking. Before planting, the teeth are soaked in a foundation solution, immersed for 2-3 minutes. Classic potassium permanganate can cause burns in high concentrations, and foundation is more effective.

Some sand. With a low agricultural background, it is recommended to sprinkle the bottom of the planting rows with sand so that the bottom does not come into contact with the ground in order to avoid root rot, etc.

Position. For better rooting, the teeth should occupy a strictly vertical position, which is not always possible with mechanized planting: the teeth are laid at an angle, which affects productivity - it decreases by 10-15%.

Do not loosen the soil. The most common anti-tip is loosening before planting. The bottom should lie on a compacted bed: loose soil will not give a tight fit with an earthen lump, it will slow down germination.

Too loose soil is rolled up on industrial plantings, rolling is practiced on light soils. Gardeners, on the other hand, simply mulch, raking up a mound of earth from above.

About mulching. Do not mulch the plantings with peat, tyrsa: these are heavy, moisture-consuming materials, and in the spring they make it difficult to warm up the soil.
Fertilizer. The introduction of organic matter before planting negatively affects the germination and phytosanitary quality of the product, gives the growth of green mass to the detriment of the bulb.

Let's hope that some simple advice is when to plant garlic, where and how they will be useful, and not useful tips will not be used. A generous harvest!

More recently, gardening enthusiasts have completed the collection of a spicy vegetable, and are already beginning to think about the next stage - planting winter garlic. Although the time has not come yet, you should take care of the seed in advance. You may need to select or purchase a new variety. It's time to decide on the place (the site should be prepared in advance), to think about the method of planting. All this will be the key to a good harvest.

Dates of planting garlic in autumn

It is impossible to indicate specific dates and dates for planting seeds, since they are different for each region and depend on climatic conditions. But the main rule is that the process should be carried out 15-20 days before a stable cooling. When deciding on the timing, one must take into account the time of the onset of the first frost. This will allow the teeth, heads, and bulbs to take root, and the owner will not be late and handle it on time. You may not be in time if the ground freezes during a sharp cold snap. In extreme cases, the frozen soil layer should be removed and the garlic should be planted.

To avoid this, the gardeners living in the central regions of the country plan to plant the crop in the first half of October. Residents of the middle lane plant it in the period from late September to early October. When nighttime temperatures drop (below 10 ° C), this is done even earlier. Those who grow garlic in the regions of Western Siberia choose more early time, mid-September - early October. In the warm Crimea, it is planted no earlier than in the first decade of November.

In Ukraine, a spicy product was always planted until October 14, the feast of the Intercession of the Virgin. In the territories bordering it (for example, in Rostov-on-Don), they are also trying to cope with this day. Belarusians choose September for planting material, and in the north of the country they begin the process from the second half of September, completing it before the first week of October, it depends on the weather. In the conditions of harsh regions, in order for the plant to survive the winter, from late August to mid-October spend deep landing... Garlic is placed in the ground at a depth of 10-15 cm instead of 3-5 cm in the usual way.

There is no big difference in the time of planting a garlic culture in the Moscow region, Belarus or Ukraine: it is chosen depending on the actual arrival of winter. Grandfathers - great-grandfathers were also guided by the Pokrov, paying attention to the state of autumn nature. They planted garlic when the ground turned cold, checking its temperature with their bare feet. In some regions, trees were observed: if the birch leaves began to fall off, then it was time for a sub-winter planting. Our ancestors also set the dates for sowing garlic in accordance with the phases of the moon. So you can find out more exact dates by opening the Lunar sowing calendar.

After what culture can / can not plant winter garlic

In addition to a properly defined time for planting, the plant also needs a crop rotation. This is one of the factors affecting the yield. There is a fair opinion that a culture can be planted in the same place only after 4 or 5 years. If the garden is large, this option is acceptable, but if it is smaller? After 2 or 3 years, it is also possible to change the place, but subject to agricultural technology, not forgetting that the success of cultivation is directly proportional to the content nutrients in the ground. When it is depleted, it will not be possible to collect large heads.

It was noticed that the plantings of a spicy crop behave differently: after some predecessors they grow excellently, after others they can be subject to diseases. When planning a place, it is necessary to take into account the conditions of the seeding shift.

Preceding cultures How do they affect
The best Melons (cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelons, zucchini, squash)

Part of the unused applied fertilizers is retained in the soil

All types of early cauliflower and early white cabbage
Early potatoes
Beans, all kinds of beans and peas
Tomatoes, bell pepper
Siderata (including rye) They inhibit the germination of weed seeds. Improves the soil by bringing nutrients closer to the surface. They "entice" pests. Radish scares off nematodes, and mustard is afraid of scab. In addition, they enrich the soil with nitrogen
Cereals
Strawberries (as an adjacent crop when planted tightly) They grow in different soil layers, "sharing" nutrition
Allowable Cabbage (except early)

They have no common diseases and pests, but they deplete the soil

Turnip
Corn
Beetroot
Radish
Onion Has common diseases with garlic. Uses nutrients from the same soil layer as garlic
Unwanted Carrot Significantly depletes the soil
Potato Are exposed to common diseases.

Use nutrients from one soil layer

Eggplant

Another important activity is the preparation of seeds and soil for planting.

Garlic processing, preparation of beds

First, you need to sort out the garlic, sorting out only intact, large, regular-shaped, without signs of infection of the cloves. In order for the future plant to be healthy and give high-quality heads, the dry material must be treated with an ash solution shortly before planting. It will not be difficult to prepare it: mix 2 liters of water, 2 glasses of ash. Then the composition is supposed to boil for 30 minutes, then cool.

In addition to ash, you can use solutions of environmentally friendly antiseptics:

  1. Potassium permanganate (potassium permanganate) is slightly pink, soaked teeth for 2 or 3 hours. Less time (3 minutes) will be spent on processing the material in 2 liters of water with 1 teaspoon copper sulfate.
  2. Some summer residents recommend a different composition, suggesting dissolving the same amount of the substance, but in one bucket of water.
  3. Dissolved kitchen salt (1 tablespoon per 1 liter of water) is more effective. It should be processed within a couple of minutes. After that, disinfect with a solution of vitriol, adding 1 teaspoon of powder to 1 bucket of water. The procedure takes only 1 minute.
  4. For disinfection and immune resistance, you can use the natural growth stimulator "EPIN Extra". You can use it after reading the instructions.

If the garlic is cooked shortly before embedding in the ground, then the beds need more serious processing.

For growing winter crops the plot where fresh manure was introduced this year is not suitable, it contains a lot of nitrogen. The leaves of the plant will be luxurious, and the underground part will not form well. In this case, it is better to use it in a rotted form. Good remedy is humus, but harmful larvae can move to the garden with it. It is also good to use peat as a fertilizer.
But he also does not have enough, it can increase the acidity of the soil. To reduce it later (neutralize), you will have to apply lime.

Garlic loves nutritious soil, so you can add mineral fertilizers per 1 square meter: superphosphate with potassium in equal proportions (20 grams each) and 10 grams of ammonium nitrate. The place for the garlic should be sunny. Good yield a vegetable with a spicy taste demonstrates on loamy soils with a loose structure. But in hot dry periods it may experience a moisture deficit, because it belongs to the moisture-loving bulbous. If rotted manure was used as fertilizer, soil moisture will be partially preserved. With the predominance of light loam on the site, there is enough garlic for both planting and consumption in winter.

With the beginning of September, the land is dug up. The soil is ready, it is necessary to form beds that are easy to care for. Experienced gardeners claim that optimal size each should be about 1-1.6 m wide and up to 0.25 m high. Next about a month, the beds sediment. The absence of a settling process will lead to a decrease in yield. Haste will only hurt.

How to plant garlic before winter

And at this time, they plan ways of planting. The planting material of a unique fragrant plant can be divided into 4 categories: bulbs (air, ripening on the arrows), teeth, one-toothed, and also heads.

Bulb planting

These mini-teeth appear after the arrows have faded and restore the purity of the variety. Their use eliminates the infection of future plants with nematodes that are in the ground, because airs are formed without contacting it. Before planting, they need to adapt to the cold season. To do this, within two weeks before sowing, they are placed in the refrigerator section, where the temperature is 0 - 4 ° C. At the end of the term, they are planted in the holes. With this fit, you can use two options.

The first of them is used in the spring, when the air, which has already turned into one-tooth, is left to grow in the ground for another winter. In two years, the seeds turn into healthy large head with kept grade purity.

The second method is more widely practiced: the bulbs are dug 10-15 days earlier than the rest of the harvest. They are sorted, dried, and after one or two months they are planted again, resulting in weighty heads.

Planting with one-toothed teeth

The advantages of round bulbs grown from bulbs include a much better keeping quality compared to the heads. To properly land them, you should:

  • make holes or stretch a cord (this way the earth is trampled down less);
  • using a stick (you can mark the depth on it) along the twine, make grooves of such a diameter that the teeth are placed in them;
  • lay the raw material in ready-made pits, the optimal distance between which is 10-15 cm, without pressing (otherwise it will hinder the formation and development of roots).
  • check the embedment depth, which depends on the choice of methods specified above.

If you use beds with a width of 1 m, then with a distance of 20 to 25 cm, 5 rows are obtained. Very convenient when leaving.

Head landing

Sometimes this garlic is called bush. Although this technique is referred to as "lazy", it has a number of advantages. It is used to save space, and time is not spent on separating the cloves. Strawberry beds are compacted with whole bulbs for disease prevention and pest control. They are planted between tomatoes, cabbage, around currant bushes, while achieving a double effect.

Bulbs with fewer cloves are better suited, then the new heads will grow large. If they have 6-8 cloves, then their size will be smaller. The grooves are made using one of the described methods; the pre-planting processing technique is also similar. But the planting depth is from 10 to 15 cm, and the distance in the furrow increases to 20 cm. If the heads are close to each other, then their shape may not be perfectly round. When used commercially, buyers are less attracted to this crop.

Landing scheme

Along the length of the beds prepared for garlic, grooves are made with a depth of 6 to 8 cm, the distance between which is 20 - 25 cm.The teeth are planted so that the distance from the bottom to the ground surface is 4-5 cm. Between them, the optimal indents will be 6-8 see The tooth is placed in an upright position or sideways. The scheme for planting bulbs is described above.

In addition to the classic scheme, there are new, unconventional ones, for example, a two-tiered landing. It makes it possible to double the yield. But with any scheme, the pattern is the same: the more spacious the plants are planted, the more chances to get a larger head.

Planting depth

How deep the seeds should be planted depends on the method chosen. The process is carried out by two of them. At the first, the teeth or heads are buried by 3-5 cm. In terms of time, planting is carried out before the onset of frost (2 or 3 weeks). Using the second, in-depth technique, the seeds are planted 10-15 cm. There he rather develops root system, and the thickness of the soil from above protects from freezing. Although agronomists claim that more nutrients are found precisely in the 10-centimeter top layer. This method is more applicable in cold regions.

Additional activities

They apply to all types of landings:

  1. If there is not enough moisture in the soil, holes or depressions are spilled with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
  2. Experts recommend another option, consisting in the preparation of a superphosphate extract: pour 1 kg of the substance in a bucket hot water, covered with a film and wrapped tightly. Stir the cooled mixture thoroughly, let it settle. Then drain the liquid part separately, and discard the sediment, which contains rare earth metals. Before spilling the grooves, half a liter of liquid is added to 1 bucket of water (10 liters).
  3. The rows are covered with compost, humus, in their absence - with earth.
  4. The beds are mulched with a layer of up to 10 cm, for which peat and sawdust are used, which in spring can be loosened together in the ground during weeding.
  5. The application of foliage, spruce branches, shavings, straw or hay requires removal before the sprouts have to break through, losing strength. If you can't go to the dacha often, then you will have to hurry up with the cleaning of such mulch.
  6. If snow falls after embedding the crop, you can do without a shelter, otherwise it is necessary to prevent freezing. This measure is relevant for residents of the Moscow region.
  7. Those who cultivate a spicy spice in the regions of Siberia use roofing material to cover plantings before the snowfall.

Correct processing, planting seeds, creating optimal conditions for the plant give good result... But the main thing is that you need high-quality seeds, which are presented in a huge variety.

The best varieties of winter garlic

When choosing a variety, it is imperative to take into account the timing of its ripening, keeping quality and taste characteristics. The following varieties are good options:

  • “Ukrainian white”, universal, easy-to-use, non-shooting, the number of cloves is from 4 to 12, the head weighs 140 g;
  • "Lyubasha" refers to frost-resistant varieties, the number of large teeth - 6-8 (each weighing about 10-15 g), has a purple hue of scales, does not lose its properties for 10 months.
  • "Spas" is fruitful, frost-resistant, immune to nematodes and fusarium wilt, the head consists of 7-9 teeth.
  • "Messidor" was bred in Holland, has a sharp taste, is immune to pests and diseases, there are 10 to 15 teeth in a head weighing 110-115 g.
  • "Jubilee Gribovsky" is quite spicy, productive variety, keeps well.
  • The hero is distinguished by its large size, the weight of the purple head is 85 g, the preservation is better than that of other varieties.

The variety is considered successful, the teeth of which differ in size. You can acquire several varieties, and then choose large, high-yielding and can be stored for a long period.

Planting winter garlic takes a lot of effort. The abundance of the crop depends on compliance with the terms, rules and recommendations. BUT proper care and well-organized agronomic measures will help achieve the desired result.

Garlic is indispensable for many dishes, marinades, canning that have long been familiar to us; it is also used for the treatment and prevention of seasonal colds. There are also many recipes traditional medicine to enhance immunity, improve heart function, cleanse and rejuvenate the body. It's a good idea to have garlic grown in your own garden for all these purposes, rather than commercial garlic.

Important! The predecessors of garlic are cucumbers, legumes, early potatoes, lettuce, cauliflower and white cabbage, pumpkin, eggplant, green manure. Garlic is not planted after tomatoes and onions.

The basics of growing garlic: what a crop needs to grow

When garlic is planted in autumn, they always count on getting a good harvest. higher than in spring planting, expect larger garlic bulbs, with large, even teeth, with a more pronounced taste and smell.

Garlic likes open, slightly elevated, dry areas with good drainage and light. It grows best on chernozem or loamy soils with low (pH 6.5 and below) acidity.

The site for planting garlic must be dug up in advance and sufficiently fertilized. As the experience of gardeners shows, it is impossible to plant garlic correctly in winter if the soil has not been prepared in advance. Prepare the soil 1.5-2 months before sowing. Both organic and mineral fertilizers are used as fertilizers. So, for 1 sq. m take 1 bucket of liquid mullein, humus, manure or 25-30 g of superphosphate, then dug to a depth of 30 cm and cover the area with a covering agromaterial or film.

Important! It is impossible to use saltpeter as fertilizer in the fall. It is used only for spring feeding.

Immediately before planting, the bed is well leveled, breaking all lumps, and hardened. The grooves-grooves with a depth of 8-10 cm are laid, observing the distance between the rows of at least 20 cm, they are moistened, and the chives are stuck into the ground with an interval of 7-10 cm from each other. They are covered with earth, lightly tamped, and mulched - with straw, sawdust, peat, a mixture of sand and ash. Further, the planted garlic safely under a layer of fallen snow will overwinter and start growing in spring.

Did you know? Garlic can withstand sub-zero temperatures of 20-25 ° C and does not need shelter in a snowy winter. But if the winter is with little snow and frosts alternate with thaws, then it is worth covering the bed with spruce branches, agrospan.

Benefits of Planting Winter Garlic in Fall

Planting garlic in autumn is preferable to spring, since the harvest is more abundant, and the heads of garlic are larger. Also, planting winter garlic in autumn gives a uniform distribution of garlic cloves in the head around the circumference - this is typical for all winter varieties of garlic. In spring (spring) varieties, the teeth are small and randomly located. In addition, if we sow garlic before winter, then we save time in the spring, thereby having the opportunity to start planting other crops.

Choosing the best time to plant winter garlic

There is no definite answer to the question of how many to plant garlic. There is no specific date and until what date the garlic is planted here, first of all, you need to focus on early autumn this year or later. This is what influences the timing of when to plant garlic before winter.

Important! Planting garlic too early leads to premature sprouts and poor yields, and delayedto poor rooting and crop loss.

Also, the region and / or country of residence is always taken into account. For example, when the time has come to plant winter garlic in Russian Yekaterinburg, this does not coincide with the time when it is necessary to plant garlic for the winter in Ukraine (practically throughout the entire territory) - due to the climate difference. And here middle stripe Russia in terms of climate is similar to Ukraine, respectively, and the dates, approximately what date garlic is planted before winter, they will have almost the same.

Let's decide when you can start planting garlic for the winter. Depending on the weather, the numbers vary from early October to early November. There is a general rule: the soil temperature should not be higher than +12 ° С, therefore, you need to wait for it to drop to this mark, after which you can already plant garlic before winter.

Did you know?Special sowing lunar calendars are issued for each year, according to which you can check the landing date of any garden culture, including garlic.

Features of the choice of planting material: the best varieties and external signs for selection

When winter garlic is planted, they pay attention to the variety - it must be winter hardy. The most suitable chives are selected.

A rich harvest of garlic is the dream of every gardener. It is not surprising that acute, garlic questions become relevant every autumn. When to plant garlic before winter? Which site to highlight? How to select seeds and plant them correctly? What fertilizers should be applied?

In this article, we will reveal the secrets of successfully planting winter garlic. And at the same time we will try to answer the most main question- when to plant garlic in autumn.

So, in order.

When to plant winter garlic

Planting such a useful and necessary culture on time is extremely important. If you plant it early, the teeth will take root, rise and freeze in winter. Late - they will take root badly, or they will not have time at all. The crop will be poor or there will be nothing to harvest as the seed will be lost.

When to plant garlic before winter is, of course, an interesting question. Because no one will ever tell the exact date. Even if we turn to the lunar calendar, then a dozen dates are indicated in it. This year, for example, we are offered to plant garlic in September, and in October, and even in November. How to navigate someone who is worried about future harvest gardener? How to choose the best date?

Planting garlic has long been associated with Pokrov, a large church holiday... According to the new style it is October 14, in the old style it is October 1. According to popular beliefs, it is on this day that summer hands over the reins of government to winter.
I am sure that the majority of seasoned gardeners are always guided by this date, given the weather conditions. So, with errors, the landing date can be called "October 14, plus, minus."

What does it mean. In some regions, planting may occur earlier. This is Siberia, the Urals. In the southern regions, on the contrary, a little later. It turns out that the garlic time begins at the end of September, and lasts until the end of October. If the warm weather pampers, then in some regions, planting can be done in November.

It turns out that the gardener decides for himself when to plant garlic before winter. They can help him folk signs verified for centuries:

  • When your hands get chilly on the street
  • When it's cold barefoot to step on the ground
  • When the white flies fly
  • When tulips are planted
  • When the birds fly south

And in order to be sure to choose the correct landing date, popular beliefs and specific weather conditions can be compared with the lunar calendar for 2017. Favorable days in September are 7, 8, 9, 23 and 24. In October - 5, 6, 20 and 22. In November - 1, 2, 16, 17, 29 and 30.

How to choose the right garlic for planting

Here in time to remember the proverb "What you sow, you reap." Therefore, for planting, you need to select the best heads with large and healthy teeth. Damage, traces of rot and mold are not acceptable on them.

It is necessary to divide the head into cloves on the day of planting, so that it does not dry out. Look through each of them, make sure that the clove has an integral outer shell. You should not “undress” him. Garlic grown from a shank clove will be sluggish. It is only necessary to separate the mother's bottom, which will slow down rooting.

When planting, it is desirable to give preference to fruitful, winter-hardy and dry-hardy varieties that have good storage qualities. Among gardeners, the following varieties are valued:

  1. Jubilee Gribovsky. Perhaps one of the best. Is different high yields... Resistant to pests and diseases. Stores well. It has a large onion with the number of cloves from 5 to 8. It can weigh 40 grams.
  2. Jubilee 07. Also belongs to the fruitful and resistant varieties. Stores well. The number of teeth is 5 - 8.
  3. Lyubasha. A wonderful variety, winter and dry resistant. Can be stored for 10 months without losing quality. The bulb weighs 10 - 15 grams, the number of cloves ranges from 7 pieces.
  4. White Ukrainian. This variety does not arrow, it keeps well. The heads can weigh from 50 to 140 grams. Differs in a large number of cloves, can have up to 12 pieces.
  5. Kharkov violet. Differs in high yields, disease and pest resistance. Has a purple color, rounded - flattened shape. It can weigh from 30 to 60 grams, have 6 teeth.

Choose a variety that better fit to the region of your residence. Only in this case can you count on bountiful harvest... Pay attention to the fact that varieties that produce arrows will be more hardy and winter hardy.

Many owners select the seed fund from their own harvest. The best heads are left for these purposes. The right decision for several seasons. But from my own experience, I can say that you need to renew the seed every three to four years.

This can be done using garlic seeds from your own garden. They are called bulbs. As it ripens, the garlic releases arrows, which we pluck. For the recovery of the seed fund, you need to leave a few arrows.

Plant the collected bulbs at the same time as the main material. Only on a separate bed. In the first year, garlic will grow from the bulbs - one-toothed. Having planted it in the second year, we will get a full-fledged onion, thereby improving our garlic arsenal.

When asked whether it is necessary to process the cloves of garlic before planting, I will answer this way. I know that some gardeners soak the seed in a light solution of potassium permanganate. But I don’t do that. Just take away quality material, I fertilize the soil well. I think that correct execution agricultural technology allows you to collect bountiful harvests.

How to choose a place to plant garlic in the fall

The first thing to do is change the lot. Garlic does not like to grow in one place for two years in a row.
Garlic does not respect areas after onions and nightshades - tomatoes, peppers, blue ones. A good new place will be where the zucchini, pumpkins, cucumbers grew. Will grow well in the place of cabbage and legumes. Loves strawberries as a neighbor.

Which areas are preferable for planting

  • With a flat, elevated surface that will not be flooded by floods in spring
  • With light sandy loam soil
  • Well lit
  • Eliminate dampness.

Site preparation for planting winter garlic

The site was chosen, now you need to prepare it. It's better to do this in advance. At least 2 weeks prior to landing.
Each gardener is his own agronomist, who has developed his own method of preparing and fertilizing the site. I will write how I do it. I can confidently advise. I have been planting garlic for many years, I am not offended by the harvest. Enough until the new season, and a decent amount is spent on blockages. For landing, I take only a kilogram - one and a half.

So what to do

  1. Dig up the earth. Maintain the depth on the bayonet of the shovel.
  2. Select weeds and stones.
  3. Border the land with a rake.
  4. Fertilize the ground. The most the best option there will be humus or compost. Apply as follows - a ten-liter bucket on two square meters. Use humus two years old. Garlic does not tolerate fresh manure, as there is a lot of nitrogen. Mail will turn acidic, and garlic respects fertile but neutral soil.
  5. Before planting, thoroughly loosen the soil.
  6. When planting, pour ash directly into the grooves. It will protect the teeth from decay.

What else can you fertilize the soil with?

  1. If there is no humus, you can use mineral fertilizers. For one square meter, add 20-30 grams of superphosphate and potash fertilizer in the amount of 20 gr.
  2. You can add ammonium nitrate just before planting. Per square meter 10 gr.

I want to emphasize that fertilizers should be applied taking into account specific conditions, not forgetting that garlic needs sandy loam non-acidic soil. Not very tight and not very soft. The dense one can push the seeds to the surface, they will simply freeze out. Strongly soft can tighten the teeth inward, which will also negatively affect the harvest.

Rules for planting garlic in the ground

Before planting, the land must be thoroughly loosened, because some time has passed since the preparation. The earth dried up from above.

Watering the area before planting is usually not required - after all, it is very much in the yard, there is enough moisture. In dry autumn, you can water it on the eve of planting.

Make grooves with a distance of 20 - 25 centimeters to the depth of the index finger. Another measure of depth is two teeth.

The cloves should be planted at a distance of 10 - 15 cm from each other. This is done after the bottom of the hole has been covered with ash. It is impossible to press a clove into the ground, just carefully put it in the hole with the roots down. Make sure that the distance from the upper tip to the surface of the earth is 3.5 - 4 centimeters.

If you decide to plant bulbs in the fall, then they are laid in pits with a shallower depth. Five centimeters will be enough.

At the end of planting, the ground must be leveled. Then the site should be mulched. This means strewn with peat or sawdust on top. Foliage is perfect. Mulching will serve as an additional fertilizer and will also keep the seeds from freezing. The effective layer is up to 4 cm.

Planted garlic is usually not watered. There is enough dew and autumn rains.

A good harvest of garlic can be expected when there is a lot of snow on the site. Therefore, it is necessary to make sure that he lingers on the site. Lay small branches, brushwood. And if necessary, you can even add snow manually in winter. But this is if your site is small.

For the southern regions, such a shelter for the winter will be enough. But in cold areas, the garlic needs to be covered more thoroughly. Layer warm blanket in the form of mulch, make it thicker, up to 18 - 20 centimeters. And then, use a covering material, or a special agrofibre.

With the onset of warm days, the mulch layer will need to be removed. Otherwise, our garlic will suffocate or stifle. And loosen the soil.

Plant it for health - garlic is a useful thing. Subject to all the rules, everything will work out for you!

Greetings friends. Autumn has come, and it would seem that it is time to finish all business with gardens and summer cottages. The harvest is harvested, the preparations are made, what else is needed? But it turns out that the rest is not so close. Indeed, it is in the autumn season that many vegetables, flowers and other vegetation require special care... For example, in order to next year get good harvest garlic, you should now prepare and plant it in the ground. Otherwise, you will not see this useful fruit in the summer.

Garlic protects the brain from aging, maintains good memory and vigor, has a great effect on the functioning of the immune and nervous system organism.

Therefore, today I invite you to understand in detail when and how you need to plant garlic for the winter in autumn in open ground... We will also analyze the landing dates according to the lunar calendar and the rules of care.

I think it's no secret to anyone that there are two ways to grow garlic:

  • winter (planted in autumn, before winter);
  • spring (planted in early spring).

We will focus on the first method. Since growing winter garlic is not at all difficult, the main thing is to observe the planting dates.

If you plant garlic early in the fall, then it will have time to germinate and, accordingly, die in the winter. If, on the contrary, it is too late, then the plant will not have time to take root and successfully overwinter.

Plus, don't confuse winter and spring garlic. Their main difference is the landing time. Well, the next memo will help you if you are just a novice gardener).

Of course, the choice of landing dates will depend not only on the lunar calendar, but also on the region and weather conditions. Experienced gardeners believe that it is necessary to plant garlic in the fall three weeks before the onset of the first frost.

When and how to plant garlic before winter in autumn in 2018

First, I suggest looking at the lunar calendar and looking at auspicious dates.

So, if you are a resident of the northern regions of our country, then you need to start planting winter garlic in September. At the same time, it is better if you do this on the waning Moon on the Root Days, that is, the Moon must pass through the fertile signs of the Zodiac.

Please note that it is not recommended to plant during the full moon and new moon period.

But for most of the inhabitants of Russia, garlic is planted before winter in October. The lunar calendar recommends the following favorable dates: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 25, 26, 29, 30 October.

You should not work with this culture on the new moon - October 8, 9, 10 (the new moons in September and October coincided) and on the full moon - October 24.

Also, do not forget to navigate from the planned landing depth:

And since we have decided on the dates of planting, we move on to the next moment - how to plant this vegetable correctly.

After what culture to plant garlic before winter

Immediately I will answer many of those of interest to the question: "After what can you plant garlic?"

It is desirable that tomatoes, legumes or cucumbers grow in the garden before the garlic. Zucchini, squash or early cabbage are also good predecessors.

But where potatoes or onions grew, it is better not to plant garlic. Also, do not set up a planting site on the site where you applied manure this year. Otherwise, the plant will give abundant tops and loose heads, well, it will be susceptible to fungal diseases.

Now let's talk about choosing a garden bed for growing this vegetable.

How to choose a place for a garden and prepare it for winter garlic

Firstly, find on the site the most fertile soil with normal or low acidity. Make a garden bed on the sunny side, while placing it from north to south.

Second, in advance prepare the soil. From late August to early September, it needs to be fertilized. So, for each square meter area, add 10 kg of humus, 1 cup of chalk or 2 cups of ash, then add 2 tbsp. tablespoons of potassium sulfate and 1 tbsp. a spoonful of superphosphate. Spread all this evenly over the soil, and then dig up the ground. In this case, the digging depth should be at least 20 cm.

After the above conditions are met, proceed with the formation of the garden.

It is desirable that the bed be up to 1 m wide and up to 25 cm high.

Then give time for soil shrinkage... That is, just leave the bed alone so that the soil settles after digging. By the way, if September is not very rainy, then for better shrinkage, you can spill the prepared soil with water several times.

The next stage is tillage... This work is needed in order to prevent diseases of garlic. Treat the earth with a 1% solution of copper sulfate at the rate of 1 tbsp. spoon for 10 liters of water. Spill the entire area of the garden with a solution using a watering can, and then cover it with foil.

But on the eve of planting garlic on the surface of the garden, you can scatter urea (10-20 grams per 1 sq. M) and pour water over the soil.

Preparing garlic for planting

  • Chives (heads of garlic are divided into parts);
  • Seeds (bulbs).

The easiest way to get a good harvest is from the cloves. So let's consider stages of preparation of this planting material.

1.Disassemble the head into teeth.

First, inspect the garlic and disassemble the heads into individual cloves. Select the largest and healthiest of them.

If you are planting non-shooting garlic varieties, use only the outer tier cloves.

2. Disinfect the teeth.

To do this, soak the cloves for a day in a 0.1% solution of potassium permanganate or 1% solution of copper sulfate.

That's it, the garlic is ready for winter landing into open ground.

Planting winter garlic

And now it's time to disassemble the technology of planting a vegetable in the fall.

1. Make holes.

On the prepared bed, mark the planting site for the cloves. Take a stick and make holes in the soil at a distance of 10 cm from each other. The depth should be from 3 to 15 cm (here it all depends on the method and time of planting).

The distance between the rows is 20-25 cm.

2. Deepen the chives.

Just spread the cloves into the holes. At the same time, it is not necessary to press them into the ground, because this will delay root formation.

3. Work the land.

Spill the earth with a pink solution of potassium permanganate.

4. Fill in the holes.

Cover the wells with rotted compost.

5. Mulch the garden bed.

For this procedure, use peat, pine needles, or fallen leaves. The optimal mulch layer is about 10 cm.

Please note that you do not need to mulch winter garlic in warm regions.

As a matter of fact, these are all the secrets of planting and caring for winter garlic! And by the way, do not forget that every two years the vegetable's place of residence needs to be changed.

If you want to use the second material for planting - seeds or bulbs, then watch the following video plot. I'm sure you will succeed. 😉
