First a few general requirements which are the same for all plants.

Lighting

In winter, the main problem is a lack of light, so room greenery needs additional lighting. Ordinary lamps are not suitable for this, people and plants perceive different parts of the light spectrum, so it is better to buy special phytolamps. Experienced growers advise connecting such a lamp to a household timer - the backlight will turn on itself for several hours a day. One lamp is enough for one box. Also, reflectors between the boxes with plants and the room do not interfere - a white curtain, a sheet of foil or metal, a mirror.

Earth and container

In winter, you will have to buy ready-made soil mixtures, which, of course, are more expensive than land "off the street", but contain fertilizers and are cleaned of garbage. In addition to the earth, drainage will be needed, which will avoid the accumulation of moisture at the bottom of the boxes and rotting of the roots. Drainage can be bought together with earth mixes or you can use broken brick, pebbles, crushed stone, crumbled polystyrene. If using pots, the drainage layer should be at least 2-3 cm.

Seeds and seedlings

It is not necessary to buy special seeds "for the balcony": quite often ordinary "garden" varieties of seeds grow even better on the balcony. In addition, many growers offer herbs in containers, with roots, - perfect option for planting. It is necessary to carefully free the roots and transplant the greens into a container with a volume of about 0.5 liters - and onto the windowsill. Two or three harvests are guaranteed to you.

I will tell you more about the features of growing some types of winter greens.

Spinach

Spinach grows fast enough, but it loves coolness, so the optimal temperature for growing it is not higher than +18 degrees. Drawers or pots with a height of 15 cm or more and southern windows are suitable for him - spinach needs a lot of light. If there is little light, then the temperature should also be lower, up to +16 degrees.

You can use ready-made soil mixtures intended for ornamental houseplants. Soak the seeds for two days before sowing, then put them in the grooves to a depth of 1.5-2 cm. The distance between the seeds is 4 cm, between the furrows - 6 cm. The spinach should be watered generously, you can even spray it. It is better not to feed the soil - it is believed that spinach easily accumulates nitrates.

Borago (cucumber herb)

Cucumber herb tastes and smells very much like a cucumber and is much easier to grow. This is an annual that produces a harvest all year round, and does not require a special temperature. He doesn't like too strong lighting, so place it on the east and west windowsills. Light soil with sand is needed as a soil; ready-made soil for roses is well suited.

If you sow seeds in a pot, then 3-4 seeds should be placed in it, if in boxes - the distance between the seeds should be 4-5 cm, between the furrows - 5-6 cm.Seedlings appear after five days, they should be watered sparingly, but avoid drying out the soil.

Basil

It takes root so easily that it does not need to be grown from seed, put the cut fresh stems in water, after five days, roots will appear and can be planted. If you grow from seeds, then after laying them in the ground, they need to be watered and covered with foil. Basil loves the sun, so place it on a south window. When five or six leaves appear, cut off the top of the basil so that it grows in breadth and bushes. Any soil from a store is suitable as soil; buy nitrogen fertilizer for it. If buds appear on the basil, they must be cut, otherwise it will give flowers, not leaves.

Dill

You can grow dill on any window. But in winter, its seeds sprout long and hard, so it is better to buy hydroponically grown seedlings or plant from pots. Use ready-made seedling soil as soil. If you still dare to take the seeds, then sow in steps, with an interval of 30-40 days, then there will be more dill. It is better to sow in boxes to a depth of 1-2 cm, when it rises - thin out, leaving a distance between shoots of 2-3 cm.Water abundantly, if the room is dry and hot - spray, otherwise the leaves will become coarse. It is good to feed it with mineral fertilizers.

Chervil (or kupyr)

Parsley, which is difficult to grow in winter, is better replaced with chervil - it is her close relative. This is a plant of the celery family, we also call it kupyr. It can be added almost everywhere - in salads, soups, vegetable and fish dishes, in France, for example, cheese and butter are flavored with it. The main nutrients are ascorbic acid and carotene. It is undemanding to the soil, so any ready-made soil will do. Sow seeds every 3 cm to a depth of 1 cm, sprout in 2 weeks. To accelerate germination, you can cover with foil. The plant is shade-tolerant, so you can plant it on any window. Watering should be abundant, but not waterlogged.

According to the unanimous opinion of everyone who has ever tried to grow greens on the windowsill, onions are the safest option, especially in winter, when there is little light. It adapts equally easily to any container - cans of water or any plastic container with earth. The bulb needs to be peeled, cut off the top and bottom (very carefully to preserve the growth points) and inserted into the opening of the jar with water, bottom down.

The lack of vitamins is especially acute for people with the onset of winter. To replenish the stock, you have to go to the store and buy expensive vegetables. Few people think about the fact that you can grow greens right at home on the windowsill. In this case, it will become possible to really avoid high costs and enjoy your body with vitamins. Moreover, at home - a pleasant leisure time, which does not cause any particular inconvenience.

Growing greens at home

In order to grow a live supply of vitamins on your windowsills, you will need:

  1. Pots and containers. It is good if they are not very deep, but wide;
  2. Substrate for vegetable seedlings. Vermicompost with coconut fiber will be ideal;
  3. Drainage material for pots;
  4. Air-tight polyethylene. It will serve as a small greenhouse;
  5. Water spray;
  6. Fertilizer in liquid form;
  7. Lamps that provide uninterrupted lighting for plants.

The first step is to go to the market or special store and buy green vegetable seeds there. Some gardening centers sell sprouted plants. Purchased seeds are planted in wide containers. After that, you will need constant care, and the greens will provide you with a harvest for the whole winter. To grow vegetables on windowsills, it is best to purchase undersized plants... Do not forget to look at the expiration date. It is preferable to choose an early or shrub type of plant.

What conditions are needed for the growth of greenery?

Cultivation of crops can be done all year round. The simplest option is seed plants. They are sown in early spring. It is during this period that future greens can receive the necessary reserves of humus, which is necessary for stable growth. After planting, the seeds need to be provided with constant watering and lighting conditions. But we are considering the option of growing in winter.

Such greenery will take more effort and waste. After all, there is very little lighting in winter, as the LEDs become shorter. Therefore, for growth, you need to take care of additional devices. On sunny days, you need to increase the day with artificial light by no more than 4-5 hours, and when it is cloudy, you will need more. For stable cultivation, it is necessary to provide the seedlings with light for 14 hours. Incandescent lamps should be no higher than 50 centimeters above the plant. The exact height depends on the crop being grown.

When growing greens on a windowsill in winter, you need to remember that there are pipes under the windowsill that transmit heat. This means that the water in the soil of the seedlings will dry quickly. This suggests that the plant needs to be provided with water more often. To make the air moist, you can place a container filled with water between the pots or cover the plants with a damp cloth.

It is best to use natural substances as fertilizer. Naturally, it is not entirely possible to do this in a room. But if it works out, then it is best of all. The way out of the situation is mineral feeding, as an alternative to organic.

What greens can you grow at home?

Such greenery is not so little. Each requires special care, so let's take a closer look at the cultures.

Parsley or celery. To grow parsley on a windowsill, you can plant seeds or a root vegetable. When choosing seeds, they need to be wrapped in gauze and put under warm water... This procedure takes half an hour. After that, the seeds should dry out within 24 hours. The pot where the greens will be planted should have drainage and substrate. The latter is laid at 0.5 centimeters. Until the first shoots sprout, the sowing should be in a dark place and watered consistently every other day. After the first shoots appear, the pot is set closer to the light. The first fruits of labor grow in 6 weeks.

Green salad... This culture is very fond of lighting. Before growing, it must be provided with uninterrupted artificial light. Another condition is the creation of moisture. Otherwise, the plant will be bitter. You need to water the sprouts at your own discretion.

Onion. Anyone can grow onions, even a novice gardener. You just need to lower the onion into a container of water and over time it will begin to grow, and the first greens will appear. The main condition is that only roots should be found in the water, otherwise the seedling will be spoiled. It is best to prematurely scald the onion with boiled water and cut off the top. By cultivating green onions in the ground, you need to provide it with a hydrogel. Otherwise, the soil will dry out and the greenery will never appear.

Dill... To plant a large container, only 3 grams of seeds are enough. It is best to use peat. Before sowing future seedlings, seeds must undergo a decontamination procedure.

Basil. When planting basil seeds, you will have to wait a long time before the first sprouts appear. Propagating plants by hydro-method, the fruits will be ready in 5 days. Basil loves nitrogen fertilizers.

Before pouring it into containers, put a thin layer of small pebbles, pieces of broken brick or crumbled polystyrene on their bottom. This is drainage (it is necessary to drain excess water during irrigation, otherwise the greenery on the windowsill can rot).

◊ Lamps(luminescent, white spectrum). It is necessary to illuminate a small garden in the winter months so that the duration of daylight hours is 13-15 hours.

  • You can purchase special timers and set the backlight time in advance, which is very convenient.

Ventilate them every day, re-moisten the gauze. After a week, the seeds are ready to take root in the ground.

Sow them 0.5 cm deep, cover them with a layer of soil on top. Then cover the pot with plastic and put it in a shady place.

Cover the ground with a damp cloth. Water every two days. Keep an eye on the seeds - ventilate and moisturize every day with a spray bottle. After three days, the first timid shoots will appear.

Remove the cloth from the ground and transfer the pot to a well-lit windowsill. As soon as there are more shoots, build a dome-shaped support from thick wire and use it to raise the film a little higher.

It can be removed completely when the shoots are pricked up. Spray the young growth with water often.

Young shoots must be thinned out so that the distance between them is at least 4 cm.

Parsley care

Growing cilantro

Cilantro (or coriander) is a very unpretentious, cold-resistant plant. It is of the same class as parsley (it is even called "Chinese parsley").

But this greenery on the windowsill will fill the whole garden with a stronger, deeper aroma. Kinza is brighter, richer in taste, and its leaves are softer.

Choosing a variety

To get a rich harvest, it is best to plant coriander of essential oil seed varieties: Ray, Amber, Change.

By the way, coriander greens must be eaten before flowering. During the appearance of flowers, cilantro develops a specific, not very pleasant aroma.

Seeds

In order for the cilantro to rise faster, its seeds must first be germinated in wet sawdust at a temperature of air from + 17 ° C to + 20 ° C.

As soon as the first sprouts appear, we replenish our greenery on the windowsill with a new plant. We plant sprouted cilantro seeds in moistened soil to a depth of 2 cm. Sow in rows with a distance of 5-10 cm, cover the seeds with a layer of earth on top.

Cover the pots with foil for the first time. But be sure to check them every day, water and air them.

After two or three weeks, coriander will make itself felt by the first shoots. And we solemnly transfer them to our home garden.

I wish you a rich home harvest!

Now, my dear readers, you know how to grow vitamin greens (dill, parsley, cilantro) at home, and in the next article of this series ("Garden on the windowsill") I will talk about growing at home. What other plants would you like to grow at home? Write about it in the comments and I will try to describe in detail the process of growing these plants.

See you soon!

In winter, you will not surprise anyone with jars of bulbs on the windowsills in apartments. In the season when there is so little sun, fresh greenery on the windows pleases the eye. And finely chopped green onions add attractiveness and spice to the dishes.

Chives have been cultivated as an agricultural crop since the fourth millennium BC. During this period, all possible ways growing it. It has been known since school that it is very easy to get a harvest at home.

On a note! Using traditional methods, you can get a harvest of green onions at home either by planting the bulbs in the ground or in a container with water.

Each of these methods has its own pros and cons. But the hostess has her own secret to get better harvest... This has spawned many unusual new ways.

  1. It contains a large number of vitamins. It contains vitamins A, B, PP. It is especially worth noting the presence of important vitamin C, which enhances the protective functions of the body during the cold period, which helps to effectively fight viral diseases.
  2. Green onions also include elements necessary for human life. These include potassium, magnesium, nitrogen, iron, phosphorus, calcium, zinc. Phosphorus and calcium are needed to maintain normal bones and teeth. The heart needs potassium, which helps the normal functioning of the myocardium. Zinc is useful for restoring immunity. It also helps to strengthen nails and hair, maintaining their beauty.
  3. There is also a substance quercetin. It prevents the development of tumor diseases and is an antioxidant, that is, it fights the aging process of the body.
  4. Finally, onions produce chlorophyll, beneficial features which are involved in the formation of blood. Another useful function of chlorophyll is to fight against harmful bacteria.

Cultivation methods on the windowsill

  1. Hydroponics- this mysterious term is called the usual and familiar to everyone growing green onion feathers from a bulb in a container with water.
  2. An alternative to growing in water is planting the bulbs in a container with soil... This method is more complicated, but the harvest will turn out to be more solid and with better nutritional properties.
  3. A new version of the previous method, invented by resourceful housewives, is the so-called onion cactus... It is a five-liter plastic bottle, in which the bulbs are laid between the layers of soil. Green feathers sprout from pre-drilled holes in the sides of the can.
  4. Turning the windowsill into a conveyor for growing green onions will help hydroponic plant... It helps to accelerate growth, and thereby increase yields.

Rules for growing green onions in water

To get green onion arrows in winter, it is not at all necessary to prepare pots or boxes of soil. Most often, they do it easier, using a simple jar of water as a container for the onion. In addition to the obvious advantage of the method, which is its simplicity, there is another plus - the absence of dirt on the windowsill.

Cooking the onions

To get good arrows of green onions, you will need to select the bulbs that are not damaged. Heads that are slightly smaller than average are best, with a cross-sectional diameter of about 4 cm. The tops of the bulbs must be cut off so that they do not interfere with the young sprouts breaking through. Then the heads are placed in heated water or potassium permanganate solution. Ash can be used instead of potassium permanganate. After 20 minutes, they are transferred to cool water. Before planting the bulbs, the husks are removed from them.

Planting Preparation - Trimming the Top

Containers for growing in water

The most suitable containers for these purposes are all kinds of cans, cups or bottles. The main requirement is a neck of sufficient width for the bulb to hold. The container is filled with water to the top so that the bottom of the bulb is slightly immersed in it (water). It is not recommended to immerse the bulb strongly in water in order to avoid rotting of the lower part. Until the roots appear, you will have to make sure that the bottom of the head touches the water, and top up if necessary.

For sprouting onions, not only glass containers are suitable. You can use transparent food containers. They must be covered with a piece of cardboard that is thick enough to support the weight of the bulbs. You will need to make holes for the bow heads in this cardboard. The container is also filled with water, and the bulbs are planted in the cardboard box. In this case, the same rule for shallow immersion of the bulb in water is observed as when planting in a jar.

On a note! In addition, a simple plate can also be adapted for forcing onions. Its bottom must be filled with water. The bulbs are placed tightly and vertically so that neighboring heads serve as a support for them. It is advisable not to allow the onion to sink in water by more than 25%.

When growing green onions in this way, it can take almost half a month from planting to obtaining long feathers. To speed up the process, you can add mineral fertilizing to the water.

Fertilizer amount per liter of water

  1. Two teaspoons of a mineral complex.
  2. Superphosphate: 2 g, ammonium nitrate: 1.5 g, potassium chloride: 1.5 g.
  3. Wood ash: 5 g.

Important! Top dressing should be added when roots begin to grow and greenery sprouts.

To get a harvest of green onions from a jar of water, it is recommended to adhere to simple principles:

  • the container in which the arrows will be grown must be pre-treated with a weak composition of potassium permanganate;
  • you need to moisten only the very bottom of the onion head, avoiding deep immersion in water to avoid decay;
  • until the roots appear, it is advisable to place containers with onions for forcing greens away from heat sources;
  • in the same period, the water should be renewed 2 times a day. After the arrows begin to grow, this action must be performed only once a day. If top dressing is introduced into the water, then the first should be replaced no more than 1 time in 7 days;
  • it is advisable to periodically rinse the roots under running water. The container also needs to be rinsed when changing moisture;
  • you can prevent onion rotting if you take it out of the water from time to time and leave it in the air for 3 hours;
  • in order to always have fresh onion shoots on the table, you need to put new bulbs for germination on the windowsill every 14 days.

Rules for growing green onions in the ground

For forcing onion arrows with the placement of planting material in the ground, the following measures are required:

  • selection of suitable onion heads;
  • preparation of containers for growing - all kinds of containers and boxes, the height of which is more than 7 cm;
  • planting onion seedlings in the soil with which the container is filled;
  • installation of the container on the windowsill.

Landing in the ground

The method of sprouting onion feathers in a container with soil differs from the uncomplicated method with planting in water.

Lighting and temperature

Green onions love the sun's rays, but cannot stand the heat. The best way onion seedlings will feel on well-lit windowsills when the windows face south, southeast, or southwest.

Important! If it is not possible to put containers on the sunny side, then it is recommended to install them above them for additional light.

The success of green onion cultivation also depends on the indoor temperature. It is not recommended to place seedlings in a hot room where the air is heated above + 20 ° C.

Watering and fertilizing

Running water is suitable for watering the bulbs. room temperature... Water must first be defended. Water enough once every 48 hours to avoid flooding the roots. Excess moisture can lead to decay of the root system. Drying of the soil is also undesirable for the plant.

Onion seedlings do not need fertilization. But a little feeding can still improve the development of green shoots. To do this, the seedlings are watered with a solution of 5 g of ash per liter of water.

You should not rush to collect the first green shoots. Otherwise, the development of the plant may be slowed down. For the first time, it is advisable to trim onion feathers no earlier than 3 weeks later. The arrows in the middle do not need to be touched. The green onions are harvested by cutting off the side feathers.

The constant collection of green onions throughout the winter will ensure that new batches of seedlings are planted in separate containers every 2 weeks. The arrows of the onion will grow evenly if you expose each side of the container to the light in turn.

Step-by-step instructions for growing "onion cactus"

New original way forcing green onions is an invention of resourceful housewives. It allows you to free up space on the windowsill for other needs, as well as decorate the kitchen interior with the help of such "exotic".

You will need bulbs, a 5 liter plastic bottle, a sharp hole punching tool, and a universal primer.

Table. Step by step guide by landing.

Steps, photoDescription of actions

A plastic bottle and a tool for cutting circles are taken (here is a heated self-tapping screw, which must be held with pliers).

3 cm round holes are cut in the container.

The first layer of soil is poured into the container up to the holes. The bulbs are laid so that their tops go out into the holes, and the roots go deep into the jar.

A new layer of soil is sprinkled on top. Steps 3 and 4 are repeated until complete.

Several onion seedlings are planted vertically on the surface.

The bulb arrangement should be placed on a well-lit windowsill. In order for the arrows of greenery to grow evenly, it is recommended to periodically expose different sides of the container to the sun. The rules for watering and feeding should be the same as in the general case of planting bulbs in the ground. It is only necessary to ensure that the soil does not erode.

Hydroponic plant

For those who like to feast on a green onion from the garden on the windowsill in winter, special devices have been invented. They work hydroponically.

The box is filled with water, the bulbs are seated on top of the holes so that their lower surface hardly comes into contact with water. A special compressor forms a moisture suspension inside the container. Thus, the likelihood of root decay is excluded. It is noticed that with this method, the arrows of the bow grow much faster.
