Forgotten "Wonderland". The Secret History of the Soviet "Disneyland

Garden do it yourself

In the village of Chenzhan in China, 32 km north-west of Beijing, next to the highway, surrounded by houses and corn fields are the ruins of a partially built entertainment park. The construction of the park, which, as the organizers promised, will be "the largest in Asia", stopped somewhere in 1998 due to disagreements between local authorities and peasants about real estate prices. The developers tried to restore construction in 2008, but unsuccessfully. Now this attraction-ghost attracts only local children and photographers who are found on the way signs warn that further they go at their own risk. One of these photographers and became David Gray, who came to an unfinished amusement park with a cool December morning.

In the USSR there were plans to build their "Disneyland". Planned the park to call the "Wonderland". About his project is written in the magazine "Technique-Youth" 1960 No. 8. Initially, an article will be given from this magazine with a description of the Future Park. And below will be the story of one of the park designers, why it never happened to build it ...

From the magazine: "... in the western part of the suburban zone of Moscow, opposite the Kuntsevo coastal park, on a huge area of 260 hectares, assume to build a whole children's town. The authors called "Guo" Wonderland ".

Imagine our great country, reduced to the size of a giant layout - the territory of the USSR, - and you will receive an idea of the future remarkable place of rest. The park is planned and the form of a relief card. Soviet Union. The main entrance is supposed to be made by the "Far East»."

How did not build the Soviet "Disneyland"

"Valentin Ivanov

"Wonderland"

In recent months, due to the adoption by the Government of Moscow, the recovery and reconstruction of Moscow parks resumed conversations about the desirability of creating in the capital of amusements, similar to the American "Disneyland". Unfortunately, a number of publications in the Moscow press contain unreliable information about the history of the emergence and development of this topic. The editors appealed to one of the oldest urban planners and landscape architects of Moscow Valentina Ivanovich Ivanov with a request to tell about the fate of the first project of Moscow Disneyland - Children's Park "Country of Miracles". From 1960 to the beginning of the 2000s, Valentin Ivanovich, working in NIII, the General Plan of Moscow and Moskomarchitecture, was actively involved in the development of most design proposals for a similar park.

The history of the creation of a large amusement park in Moscow takes the beginning from the fall of 1959, when N.S. Khrushchev for the first time visited the United States of America. During his stay in Los Angeles, he expressed a desire to visit Walt Disney Park discovered in 1955, which every year acquired more and more popularity worldwide. In Disneyland, Khrushchev did not hit the security for reasons, but he returned home, noted that it would be nice to build a similar children's park in Moscow. The idea was picked up by the heads of the Central Committee of the VLKSM - the first secretary S.P. Pavlov and the managing deeds A.A. Lights. Develop an appropriate project proposal was requested by the Institute of the General Plan of Moscow.

Almost all over the first half of 1960, we, young then architects Galina Mechanin, Anatoly Savin and I, under the guidance of the experienced urban planner and landscape architect Vitaly Ivanovich Dolganova worked on this task. We installed the time by May 1. Worked with great enthusiasm and interest, without days off, almost around the clock.

At the proposal V.I. Dolganova for the creation of the park was chosen by the floodplain of the Nizhny Mnevnikov - the island formed as a result of the arrangement of the river-river bed during the construction of Karamyshevsky hydrogen. The floodplain was a flat area with an area of about 350 hectares of overhaul, with single green plantings and several small reservoirs. From the south side, she was well visible from the high shore of the Phileu Park, in the north, through the riverbed, adjacent to the Krylatskaya floodplain and the territory of the future rowing channel, the planning of which was already developed in the 3rd workshop of our institute under the direction of architect P.V. Pomazanova. Together, all these territories were formed by the so-called North-Western recreation area, now the Natural Park "Moskvoretsky".

The prospects for transport accessibility of the park were quite favorable. From the south, the Phileus radius of the metro has already been extended, from the ground stations of which to the park you could organize suspended cableways or ferry crossings through Moscow river. From the north, the Tagansko-Krasnopresnensky radius was designed, from the nearest stations of which the designated 5th transport ring led the automobile transport to the main entrance to the park. From the West, from the Rublevsky highway, a congress was planned to be flooded and the bridge over the river leading directly to the park. IN summer period You could get to the park on river trams. The possibility of transporting visitors from near Moscow airports with helicopters is also envisaged; To do this, it was planned to organize several landing sites on the territory of the park. That's just all types of engineering communications had to be built from scratch: there was no engineering in the flood.

After consideration of numerous layout options and hot disputes, we stopped at the "Lobov" itself and, it would seem like a simple sentence: put the master's master plan for our country with all the washing seas and oceans, deserts and mountains. The "card" was perfect on the island, even almost accurately located in the countries of light. Around the perimeter of the park, along the banks of the river-river bed, we placed the visitors' service area: the main and extra entrances to the park, pier, beaches, sports platforms, catering points, etc.

As a result, by the end of April, a large park layout appeared on a scale of 1: 1000 with numerous facilities, attractions, playgrounds, hotels, sports pavilions and many other things, with picturesque terrain, open spaces, "gardens and groves" from twisted painted wire, made by the maggots of the Kartolyatography factory, giving us to help by the leadership of APU Moscow. The whole team of the institute carefully followed our activities, managers, gaps and hips of workshops and departments often went to us to look at the layout, which was transformed every day.

IN set time The work was completed. The leaders of the Komsomol, the chief architect of Moscow I.I. Lovheiko and we, the authors, had to submit a project of the park, called the name "Wonderland", for consideration at the highest level. How I regret now that I did not led at that time any entries! Therefore, I will try to reproduce those somewhat exciting days that we spent in the receiving N.S. Khrushchev, waiting for the consideration of our work.

We were ordered to bring a layout consisting of three parts, each about 120 x 300 cm, in the Kremlin. The layout was posted in the receiving Secretary General of the CPSU Central Committee, and we began to wait for the arrival of Khrushchev. From time to time he was heard: "goes! Goes! " However, each time the appearance of the "first" was postponed: here we "went through the road" Japanese ambassador, then a group of generals, some ministers, etc.

Sometimes Nikita Sergeevich himself passed through the reception room, stopped at the layout and said: "Wait, wait, I will find time to get acquainted with your suggestions." And we are waiting, we are waiting for the day, the second, the third ... On the evening of May 8, Khrushchev comes out and says: "I apologize to me: in the Palace of Sports in Luzhniki, they are waiting for me to a rally dedicated to the Victory Day ... Come after the holiday."

On May 10, we were again in the Kremlin and the long-awaited conversation took place. Initially, I.I. said about our sentences. Lovheko. He briefly outlined the essence of the project, spoke about the planning structure, the main functional areas of the park and attractions.

Questions who asked Nikita Sergeevich were repeatedly discussed while working on the project. At times, it seemed that Khrushchev worked with us, so accurate and most of them were comments and considerations. He was interested in everything: what transport and for what time it will be possible to get to the park from the city center, who will meet visitors, what scientific achievements They will be reflected in attractions, at exhibitions and in gaming pavilions, which will be the individuality of our park, his difference from Disneyland, which national traditions of entertainment activities are taken into account in the project, and much more.

The news of the approval of our project proposals was ahead of our return to the institute. A large transparency with words was posted in the lobby: Congratulations to the workshop number 4 with the statement of the project "Country of Miracles"! A day later, almost all newspapers appeared notes about our project. And soon there was a resolution of the CPSU Central Committee and the Council of Ministers of the USSR, which said the allocation of 800 million rubles for further design and construction of the 1st stage of the park, and also contained a number of instructions to the Central Committee of the SBCMM and the USSR State Construction.

We "flew on the wings of good luck." It would be more - at the Central Committee of the WLKSM, they created a special group, which included artists, director-producers, science science, journalists, and where they were included, architects, for more detailed development of the script and the maintenance of the park. What are the names which interesting people were part of this group! Science fiction writers Ivan Efremov and Alexander Kazantsev, editor of the most popular Youth Magazine Journal Vasily Zakharchenko, other celebrities in those years. She was entrusted to the famous director Joseph Tumanov, and he attracted the work of the Chief Artist of the Central Children's Theater Boris Knoblock, with whom we worked on the artistic program of the VI World Festival of Youth and Students of 1957. What pleasure was to be with them in the same company, not to mention the hopes for the upcoming long joint work!

The director's group was going twice. Matters admired us with their unrestrained fantasy, we listened to many interesting advice. Some were skeptical about the possibility of implementing such a grand venture, but we, young, believed in good luck.

At the beginning of August, the Moscow Komsomolets devoted to our project a large article under the heading "Mickey Mouse in the Wonderland, the authors of which, V. Krivosheev and A. Flerovsky, thoroughly described all our ideas, accompanying the material by photos of the layout and drawings of the artist V. Zharinova .

From the Moscow Komsomol Center, the magazine "Technique - Youth" is not lagging behind: in the same month, an article A. A. An article appears on his pages. Svetlikova "Country of Miracles", in which our suggestions are presented in detail. One of the authors of the project, A. Savin, accompanies the article with a painter painter pattern, which is clearly visible layout, main functional zones and a variety of rides Park.

Young Victoria Tokarev takes an interview with us and publishes in the December issue of the journal "Youth" in fairly detailed information about our project, illustrated by photography of the central part of the "Wonderland countries".

A good project assessment, government assistance, public attention, our colleagues and presss allowed us to hope for his ambulance implementation. Then we have not yet known how many architectural projects fall "in the basket", and I did not suspect that I had to develop this topic more than more than once, became the wrong dream of my "architectural childhood."

In the autumn of 1960, the Central Committee of the WLKSM was preparing to send a large group of young scientists, workers, collective farmers, athletes, representatives of other professions in the United States. Galina Mechanshin and me included in its composition. A special program was drawn up for us: we had to explore the layout, architecture, an attraction device in "Disneyland". But we were rejoiced. We were premature - on the day of departure, we were told "the most pregnancy news": the US Embassy did not give our visa group, so the trip will not take place.

The next day, the TASS message appeared in all central newspapers: a group of Soviet youth, the State Department refused visas. The "iron curtain" is omitted from the American side, and not with the Soviet, as always, our enemies have argued. In fact, as it turned out, the leaders of the trip passed the documents to the US Embassy on the day later, and, accordingly, the embassy issued a visas also one day later. However, our government at that time was advantageous to once again emphasize the unifimate attitude of the States to the USSR, and it took advantage. So we did not see the "Disneyland" ...

Almost all of 1960, our design proposals for the park "Country of Miracles" were considered by the examination of the USSR State Building, headed by the First Deputy Chairman N.V. Baranov. Several times we met with him and the experts of the Gosstroy, told in detail our suggestions, responded to numerous questions, complemented and clarified technical and economic calculations. In the final conclusion of the examination, generally supported the idea of creating a children's park for the similarity of the American "Disneyland" in Moscow, it was recommended to use the already mastered territory of the VDNH after the translation of the latter to the South-West of Moscow, to the site where the World Exhibition of Expo -1967 (As a result, the exhibition was held in Canada, in Montreal).

We and A. Savin under the leadership of V.I. Dolganova had to work at the end of 1960 and in the first half of 1961 to work, already in the maquette workshop of the construction exhibition on the Frunzenskaya Embankment, over two new variants of the Park project on the territory of the VDNH. All three of our layout for about two years stood in the building of the Central Committee of the VLKSM next to the orders and banners of the Komsomol. However, interest in this checky gradually faded. And after the resignation of N.S. Khrushchev and Gosstroy the USSR, and the Central Committee of the VLKSM, and the Mosgorpolycom hurried to forget about all his ideas.

Later we tried to convey these fairly interesting layouts in the Architecture Museum. But according to the current requirements that existed then, it was not allowed to demonstrate objects with an area of over 200 hectares in open exposures, and the area of our fleet with surrounding territories was more than 500 hectares. As a result, the layouts were destroyed. I have only preserved photos of the first version of the layout - for the floodplain of the lower municipals - and two options for the director general of the park on the territory of the VDNH. I have still stored and repeatedly showed young architects of the institute of the General Plan, when in 1970-1990 we had to develop new options for the country's chief children's fleet. But this, as they say, another story ... "
