WAY OF RECOVERY A plan of action to prevent breakdown. Terence T. Gorski

Consecutive stages of recovery.

The developmental model of recovery (I will call it RMB for short) is based on the following beliefs:

Recovery is a long term process that is not easy.

Recovery requires complete abstinence from alcohol and other drugs, as well as vigorous efforts aimed at personal growth.

There are fundamental principles that govern this process.

The better we understand these principles, the easier it will be for us to recover.

Understanding alone will not lead to recovery. New understanding must express itself in action.

The actions required to achieve full recovery can be clearly and accurately described as goals of recovery.

It is normal and natural to get stuck on the road to recovery from time to time. Whether you get stuck or not doesn't count as success or failure, but how you deal with difficult places counts.

To find out what recovery is, it is helpful to divide the process into stages. We will explore six different stages of recovery. I will call these (1) transition, (2) stabilization, (3) early recovery, (4) moderate recovery, (5) late recovery, and (6) maintenance.

In the first stage of recovery - transition - we acknowledge that we have problems with chemicals, but we think we can solve them if we learn to control our use. This stage ends when we admit that we have lost the ability to control (that we are "powerless" over alcohol and drugs) and that we need abstinence in order to regain control of our lives. We do not yet know why we have lost control, or how to stay sober; we just know we cannot continue to be who we were. In A.A. this is called "being tired of fatigue."

During the next stage - stabilization - we already know that we have serious problems with alcohol and drugs, and that we need to completely stop using them, but we cannot do it yet. During this period, we recover from acute withdrawal (the stage of trembling and embarrassment that we experience as our bodies are cleared). And we recover from delayed, or subacute, alcohol or drug withdrawal (a period lasting 6 to 18 months when we feel like we’re in mental fog). At this stage, we learn how to "keep from one drink (or one dose of the drug) day after day."

The third stage - early recovery - is the time for internal changes. On it we learn to feel comfortable in abstinence. The physical cravings for substance use diminish and we learn more about our addiction and how it has affected us. We also learn to overcome feelings of shame, guilt, and remorse. We become able to cope with our problems without resorting to substances. Early recovery ends when we are ready to start applying what we have learned to fix other areas of our lives.

During the middle recovery, stage four, we learn how to repair past damage and find balance in life. We learn that complete recovery means “applying these principles (the skills of soberness we learned during our early recovery) in all of our affairs” (in the real world of everyday life). During the period of average recovery, correcting relationships with people becomes a priority. We overestimate our meaningful relationships, in particular with family and friends, and our careers. If we find ourselves unhappy in any of these areas, we accept it and plan to do something about it. In AA terms, this is called making amends. We recognize that we have harmed other people. We want to take responsibility and do our best to make amends. Average recovery ends when we achieve a balanced and stable life.

During the fifth stage - late recovery - we focus on overcoming the obstacles to a healthy life that were formed when we were children, even before our addiction developed. Many chemically addicted people come from dysfunctional families. Because our parents were unable to do their best in parenting, we were unable to acquire the skills necessary to be happy. Late recovery ends when we complete three things:

First, we recognize our adult problems, which are caused by growing up in a dysfunctional family;

second, we will learn how to recover from the inescapable pain caused by growing up in it.

Finally, we will learn how to deal with current problems despite the obstacles caused by the way we were raised.

The sixth and final stage is maintenance. During this time, chemically addicted people learn that their illness exists in the present and not in the past. (Play on words: alcohol-ism, not alcohol-wasm). We learn that we need constant growth and development of our personality. We realize that we can never use alcohol and drugs without problems, and that we must be guided by a recovery program on a daily basis so that addictive thinking does not come back. We live to enjoy our journey through life.

Recovery stage Main theme
Transition Stop trying to control alcohol or drug use.
Stabilization Healing from damage caused by consumption
Early recovery Internal change (changing thoughts, feelings, and actions related to alcohol and drug use).
Average recovery External changes (correcting the lifestyle disorders caused by addiction and developing a balanced lifestyle).
Late recovery Outgrowing the limitations of childhood
Maintaining Balanced life and continuation
growth and development

Many chemically addicted people ask the question: "What actions of mine can lead to a breakdown?" The answer is simple. You don't have to do anything. Stop using alcohol and other drugs, but continue living the life you have always lived. Your illness will do the rest. It will trigger a series of automatic (or habitual) responses to life, and this life will lead to such pain and discomfort that a return to use seems like a good way out.

Recovery means change. In order to change, we must have goals. It is also helpful to have an action plan or step-by-step guide that shows us what to do and how to do it. This book is designed to be such a guide.

Each of the following chapters is a detailed description of one of the stages of recovery. Do not despair. Remember, recovery is a growth process that takes time. The journey from stabilization to maintenance can take anywhere from three to fifteen years, depending on how sick you were, when you began to recover, how hard and continuously you worked on your recovery plan, and the type of help you received. from others.

Used in the rehabilitation program. Separation of stages helps to improve the assessment of the patient's condition by workers, and by the patient himself in the process of recovery.

1 stage of recovery "Transition".

First stage includes work on the recognition of powerlessness over the problem of alcoholism and drug addiction, recognition of the loss of control over the problem.

Many, even admitting their powerlessness in front of the problem, try to control the use by reducing the dose, setting the time and terms of possible use. Even entering rehabilitation, the addict is motivated not by complete recovery and sustained remission, but by reducing the dose for further use.

This stage ends from the moment of recognition of powerlessness over alcohol and drugs, and a lack of desire to control drug use.

The addict who seeks help does not always have an idea why he has lost control, why drug use cannot be stopped, why all attempts to overcome the craving ended in failure. Our task is to help in realizing the problem and accepting it as already happened. In A.A. communities, these symptoms are called fatigue fatigue.

It is important for us that sobriety is not just wound healing, but a way of life.

2 stage of recovery. "Stabilization"

Stabilization. Healing from damage caused by consumption.

During the second stage - stabilization- we already understand that we have big problems with mind-altering substances, and that we need to completely stop using them, but we are not yet able to do this. During the period stabilization we are recovering physically from the effects of drug use. Withdrawal syndrome lasts for everyone individually, for some it may take a month, while for others it may take much longer. This period is the most difficult, since there is a struggle with oneself, how to resist the first glass or injection. At this stage, after the recovery of the body from abstinence, addicts experience mental disorders and emotional mood swings. This stage is one of the most important in the rehabilitation process, for which maximum resources are involved. Working with psychologists, group therapy, and occupational therapy.

Stage 3. Early recovery

The third stage is early recovery: this is the time for internal changes. At this stage, we learn to live in society and feel comfortable in abstaining from psychoactive substances. The cravings for alcohol and drugs weaken, and we delve into the problem that led us to addiction and how it affected us. We learn to overcome feelings of shame, guilt, and remorse. The task of this stage learn to cope with their problems without resorting to drugs. Early recovery ends when we are ready to start applying what we have learned to fix other areas of our lives.

Stage 4. Average recovery

Stage 5 (not for everyone)

During the fifth stage - "late convalescence". Our task is to focus the attention of the children on overcoming obstacles to a new "sober" life, which have been formed since childhood. Long before a person became addicted. Many drug addicts come from dysfunctional families. (Families where parents did not fulfill their parental responsibilities). Due to the lack of proper upbringing, the child was unable to acquire standard skills in order to be happy. The task of the center, if necessary, is to show a person about possible adult problems caused by upbringing in a dysfunctional family, and to help recover in this area, to solve current problems, despite the obstacles caused by the way parents raised them.

Stage 6: Maintenance

The final part of the recovery is "maintenance".

Undergoing a course of recovery from drugs or alcohol, receives the necessary information on how to live on, how to overcome obstacles and stay sober. At the final part of the recovery process, the addict's task is to bring all the information received to life.

Constant work on oneself and current problems makes it possible to become more resistant to the problems of alcoholism and drug addiction, and the ability to self-development in society.

Recovery stage Main theme
Transition Stop trying to control alcohol or drug use.
Stabilization Healing from damage caused by consumption
Early recovery Internal change (changing thoughts, feelings, and actions related to alcohol and drug use).
Average recovery External changes (correcting the lifestyle disorders caused by addiction and developing a balanced lifestyle).
Late recovery Outgrowing the limitations of childhood
Maintaining Balanced life and continuation of growth and development

Recovery cannot happen overnight. Recovery, as the ultimate goal on the path from addiction to a full-fledged free life, implies a certain path, the steps along which lead to the restoration and harmonization of all spheres of a person's personality: biological, mental, social and spiritual. In order to clearly see the landmarks on the path of recovery and not get confused in steps, it makes sense to divide the process into several global segments.

Transition stage

Or the stage of acceptance, in which a person honestly admits to himself that he has a problem with alcohol / drugs. Most often, even after the addict has realized his addiction and attraction, he continues to believe that the situation is under control, and he can stop at any time. The transition stage ends at the moment when a person realizes that control has actually been lost, recognizes the need for treatment in order to get rid of addiction. The person still does not know why and how control has been lost, but he already understands that the substance is stronger than him.

Stabilization stage

The period of cleansing the body, active restoration of the biological sphere. Detoxification, recovery from withdrawal symptoms, a difficult period of observation of your body, coupled with the realization that the goal is to refuse a daily dose. The duration of this period depends on the state of the organism, the degree of dependence and the damage caused, usually from six months to a year. This is the stage of taking care of the biological sphere.

The initial stage of recovery

Period of internal changes. By this time, the body has already been cleansed, accustomed to do without the use of substances. A person begins to learn more about his mental dependence, realizes all its consequences and interconnections, learns to overcome feelings of self-rejection, feelings of guilt and shame. This is an inner work with the psychic sphere.

Intermediate stage

The period of practical application of the principles of sober life, which were comprehended at the previous stage. This is the time of restoration of relations with people, reassessment of the value of close and family relationships, a gradual return to society. At this stage, there is no longer a feeling of guilt, but there is an awareness of responsibility for one's life and for the harm and suffering caused to loved ones. The emergence of an intention to correct the situation and, if possible, to compensate for the damage. This is the stage of harmonization of the social sphere.

Final stage

An appeal to the depths of one's soul, to the psyche and childhood. Recognizing and dealing with psychological problems that became traumas of upbringing in childhood. Many chemically dependent people were genetically predisposed or raised in addictive families. But the reason may be not only this. It is important to find in the soul the past childhood grievances and traumas, to recognize them, interpret and let go, learn to take responsibility from the perspective of an adult for your future life.

Maintaining

The realization that chemical addiction is something that you have to carry with you all your life, and any attempt to use the substance immediately activates the disease. It is not completely cured, but it is possible to keep it in a state of remission. The maintenance stage is a daily continuous process of personal growth, control over your feelings, drives, thoughts. Tracking the moments of temptation or depression due to the prevailing circumstances - it is important to remember in time about your goal, about the path traveled and direct your thoughts away from alluring substances. And as a result, the reward is a fulfilling, drug-free life.

Recovery stages The stages of recovery used in the rehabilitation program. Separation of stages helps to improve the assessment of the patient's condition by workers, and by the patient himself in the process of recovery. That there would be no confusion. The stages of rehabilitation may differ from the stage of recovery.

Extra: education in a dysfunctional family This is a small society in which tough upbringing of children is welcomed, tough rules and destructive behavior are encouraged. In such a family there is no respect, no recognition of merit, no encouragement of the individual. Concluding part. Socialization. We conduct various activities to help you immerse yourself in real life without using alcohol and drugs; Below is a video excerpt from the event at the New Hope Center, now a Helping Hand.

Cancer, or malignant tumor, develops in the body as a result of the appearance of atypical cells that divide at an uncontrolled high rate. This leads to an increase in the tumor, its growth through the tissues, to the very blood vessels. Here, cells easily enter the general bloodstream and are carried throughout the body, settling in the most distant organs. Secondary formations appear - metastases.

Statistics

Treatment of cancer in the metastatic stage is most often ineffective. Positive results are possible here, but this requires a fanatical desire to survive. If hundreds of thousands of people fall ill with cancer every year, then there are dozens of cases of healing at the last stage in 50 years.

Cancer stages

A zero degree is diagnosed (the most successful for a complete cure) and the next 4 stages. With each formation reaches a certain size, there is its own rate of spread.

The last stage becomes the most severe, not only the sources of the tumor are damaged, but also the neighboring distant organs. The signs of stage 4 are:

  • a state of fever with a high constant temperature;
  • oppressive constant pains that are not relieved by analgesics;
  • weakness and fatigue, in which the patient constantly feels sleepy;
  • exhaustion and loss of appetite;
  • the appearance of bleeding and disruption of the main body systems - the gastrointestinal tract, urinary, pulmonary.

The size of the tumor is pushed into the background, the condition is determined by metastases. They are the ones that cause damage to the brain, lungs, liver and bones.

Can surgery help

The patient's recovery depends entirely on the prevalence of the process. Surgeons have 2 ways to influence the process:

  1. Antiblastic surgery - complete excision of the tumor.
  2. Ablasty is a principle aimed at preventing recurrence and spread of a tumor by excising the focus together with the lymph nodes and blood vessels in a single block, within healthy tissue.

In the initial stages, radical treatment has the highest efficiency - more than 90%. At stage 4 it is impossible to expect this, the process is irreversible, because the organ itself is infiltratively destroyed, there are multiple metastases.

Only a complete removal of the tumor and metastases can provide a cure for stage 4. Sometimes this is possible. The surgeon can remove more adjacent tissues and structures, for example, in a mastectomy. But more often the isolation of mutated masses becomes impossible and only part of the pathological neoplasm is excised.

The main treatment for stage 4 is palliative therapy. It only helps to eliminate the symptoms and alleviate the patient's condition. It includes chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation, radiotherapy, which are very effective for certain tumors. Inoperable forms are removed only for health reasons: elimination of intestinal obstruction, urinary retention, bleeding.

Stage 4 therapy

The basic principles of treatment are as follows:

  1. Immunotherapy - the use of cytokines and monoclonal antibodies that increase the body's defenses to fight atypical cells. The integrity of healthy tissue is not compromised and there are no side effects. The drugs are selected individually. The disadvantage is the length of treatment to achieve results.
  2. Radiation therapy or radiation therapy - mainly used for bone cancer. Gamma rays destroy atypical cells in the stage of active reproduction.
  3. Proton radiation therapy - has a great advantage: the proton flux acts very directionally and practically does not affect healthy tissue.
  4. Chemotherapy is almost always used to slow the growth of tumors, especially bone tumors. This is a treatment with cytostatics.

Innovative methods:

  1. Laser therapy is a layer-by-layer dissection of the tumor with simultaneous tissue coagulation. This stops the scattering of cancer cells.
  2. Cryotherapy - a source of freezing (nitrous oxide) is brought to the tumor and exposed to a critically low temperature.
  3. Also, the tumor can be influenced by a high-power point current.

Self-healing cases of cancer

The phenomenon of self-healing is called Peregrine syndrome. Such cases of spontaneous recovery are described in the literature. This regression occurs without the intervention of doctors. It can be complete or partial.

The name is given because in the 13th century there was a saint named Peregrinus. At a young age, he was found to have a large bone tumor. He treated himself only with prayers and according to church documents, he died at the age of 80, being cured of a tumor.

Today's situation

It is such that, according to scientists, a cure for cancer will not be created within the next 20 years, at least. The immunity of the patient is of great importance. Traditional treatments and the psychological state of the patient are also important.

Although it is difficult to talk about it, a person can be overwhelmed by his diagnosis. According to research since 1960, lists of cured cancer patients in whom the diagnosis was confirmed histologically have been published:

  1. In the first place among such cases is renal cancer such as hypernephroma. There were about 70 cases of recovery.
  2. In second place is blood cancer (leukemia) - 53 patients have been cured.
  3. Neuroblastoma in the third - 41 cases.
  4. Retinoblastoma - 33 cases.
  5. 22 women recovered from breast cancer without doctors.
  6. Sixteen men experienced self-regression of testicular cancer.
  7. For melanoma, 69 cases of healing have been described.

All other cases of healing are less than 10, so it is impossible to talk about this as a pattern. In theory, this could also be a medical error. Cases of cure for stage 4 esophageal cancer, for example, have not been reported at all.

Stomach cancer

At stage 4, palliative chemotherapy is used. Sometimes an emergency gastroenterostomy can be performed to restore the movement of food through the gastrointestinal tract. Cases of cure of stage 4 stomach cancer are known. Such examples are especially frequent in patients treated in Japan according to the Nishi system.

Esophageal carcinoma

Stage 4 esophageal cancer is difficult and cannot be treated even in emergency situations. There were no cases of cure. Palliative therapy only removes symptoms without affecting their source at all. Treatment can only prolong life for a while and make it acceptable by reducing persistent pain.

Well-known cases of cure

The most famous cure for stage 4 cancer is the illness and recovery of cyclist Lance Armstrong. In 1996, he was diagnosed with end-stage testicular cancer. After 2 years, he was healthy and returned to the big sport.

There have been cases of cure for stage 4 cancer on the so-called placebo effect. The patient, not knowing his diagnosis, is treated for other pathologies and recovers. For example, the following case of a patient's recovery is described. An oncologist professor from Moscow University consulted patients in Kazakhstan in the 70s. At the reception, one of the patients was found to have an inoperable form of laryngeal cancer. The specialist prescribed the usual symptomatic treatment without naming the diagnosis. After 5 years, the same patient came to the professor to thank him, being completely healthy.

This is also evidenced by a review of one case: while the woman did not know her diagnosis, she was being treated in gynecology for inflammation of the uterus. Then she was transferred to oncology and handed a card with the diagnosis. When she read the "verdict", her hands dropped, and she died at home after a week and a half.

Also described is a case of a woman cured at stage 4 of cancer, when she did not know her diagnosis. At the very first operation, having cut the abdominal cavity, the tumor was not touched, and multiple organ damage was noted. The woman did not know her diagnosis and lived for another 5 years. She went to the doctors for appendicitis, she had no tumor.

A living example of a case of a cure for stage 4 stomach cancer is the life of yachtsman Jason MacDonald, who was given a 3-month life prognosis. After hearing the verdict of the doctors, he set off alone on a yacht around the world. He was cured by completely new living conditions - the harsh sea, simple rough food and the absence of excesses.

As strange as it may sound, cancer is curable - the story of the cure of stage 4 cancer by American movie star Michael Douglas proves it. Oncology of his throat reached stage 3 or even 4, but he was able to get out thanks to the support of his loved ones.

In the materials of the oncological center "European clinic for the treatment of cancer in Moscow," a case of a patient Aleksey was cured, who was also diagnosed with stage 4 intestinal cancer. He simply believed his treating oncologist Andrey Pylev and did not go to Israel, having returned the tickets. He underwent several operations, 6 courses of chemotherapy. I literally forced myself to move and do my work and family. The morale was terrible. When all the metastases were localized in one lobe of the liver, another operation was performed - a two-stage liver resection. He agreed to her with a negligible chance. He had nothing to lose. Proves that cancer is curable, the story of the cure of stage 4 cancer by Alexey. He completely escaped the palliative! This is a completely different format, when the tumor is gone at all. This is what the attending surgeon Andrei Pylev says.

There are real cases of cure for stage 4 cancer. The popular author of detective stories Daria Dontsova was diagnosed with grade 4 breast cancer. The professor predicted her only 3 months of life. Dontsova herself recalls that she simply told herself that this could not be, because she has 3 children, a mother, cats and dogs. The writer was determined to win. She underwent not only surgery, but also radiation and chemotherapy.

Stage 4 cancer was cured by the actress Yulia Volkova, who found out about her diagnosis in 2012. She did not want to discuss this with anyone. She underwent a number of operations and only a few years later admitted this publicly. As a result of the operation, she lost her voice and could only whisper. She underwent 3 more operations to restore ligaments in Germany and Korea. Now Julia even sometimes performs.

Another story of a cure for stage 4 cancer. Kylie Minogue, a singer from Australia, was diagnosed with breast cancer while touring Europe in 2005 at the age of 36. The star immediately underwent surgery and within 8 months - chemotherapy. Kylie Minogue forced herself to fight, although it seemed that the ground had slipped from under her feet.

The life of the famous TV presenter Yuri Nikolaev, who fought with intestinal oncology for several years and won, proves that a cure for stage 4 cancer with metastases is possible. But this pathology is practically incurable. Yuri Nikolaev said that the world around him immediately turned black overnight, but he managed to overcome despair. He underwent a number of operations and other activities included in the course of therapy.

A real cure for stage 4 cancer happened with Sharon Osbourne - the wife of the famous rock musician Ozzy Osbourne. Having colon cancer, she preventively removed her mammary glands in 2012.

An example of a cure for stage 4 cancer with metastases is the disease and recovery of Lyme Vaikule. In 1991, while touring America, she was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. There was little chance of recovery. After the cure, she said that the diagnosis forced her to reconsider her outlook on life. The star had a difficult character, was harsh, rude and did not like many people. After the treatment, the singer changed dramatically in character and attitude towards others.

A miraculous cure for stage 4 cancer happened with Rod Stewart. The British singer was operated on for thyroid cancer in July 2000, and underwent chemotherapy several times. In January 2001 he was completely cured and still lives. Then Rod looked at his condition as a sign from above, and completely revised his life.

Another example of a cure is Canadian runner Terry Fox. At the age of 19, he lost his leg due to cancer, but he was cured thanks to the belief in victory and after a few years he ran across the country with a prosthesis, collecting funds for cancer research.

Other celebrities who beat cancer: singer Anastacia, Angelina Jolie, Christina Applegate, Hugh Jackman, I. Kobzon - fought cancer for 13 years, Michael Hall, Vladimir Pozner, Cynthia Nixon, Vladimir Levkin from the Na-Na group, Boris Korchevnikov, Andrey Gaidulyan, Valentin Yudashkin, Emmanuil Vitorgan.

And how many cured people whose names are not so famous!

What does human life consist of?

A person can replenish his energy from 3 sources: food, light (environment) and thoughts. In the absence of 1 source or its decrease, the other 2 usually compensate for it. This can explain all those many cases when a grandfather or grandmother smoked until the age of 90 and did not develop lung cancer. Or an uncle or aunt ate butter with spoons, ate pork, fat sausage all their lives, drank alcohol and lived to a ripe old age. But in such cases, they never talk about how these people lived in general and what they always did right. Maybe they lived in nature. They smoked, but were modest in food, active, kind to others, had a positive mindset, went to church and prayed strongly. Or when they got sick, they dramatically changed in behavior, and compensated for the lost sources of nutrition.

Dr. Le Shan believes that it is the internal state of a person that affects the incidence of cancer. If for some reason he ceases to see meaning in his life, then the body reacts to this with cancer. This is especially typical for active people who, due to certain circumstances, suddenly "folded their wings."

These facts convinced the doctor that cancer is a turning point in a person's life, his last warning that everything needs to be changed. On this topic, he wrote his book with numerous examples of healing.

The same opinion is held by the doctor Bernie Siegel in his books. It often happens that a person only needs to be reminded of the proximity of death, so that this spurred him to think and do everything differently, simply because “there will be no more time,” he is just barely enough.

Today's workaholics often suppress their pursuit of happiness. Why is there so much talk about the positive? Because the negative has very low vibrations that destroy the body. We must not forget about ourselves and put everything on the altar for children, husband, etc. Do you know what was noticed: women who take too much care of their children, more often than their other peers, get breast cancer.

Miracles are possible, but they must be accompanied by a fanatical desire to survive. At stage 4, there is too little time and energy left to reflect. Not a single day to lose. If you believe in the power of the Almighty, then pray fervently and sincerely.
