Terrace board installation: how to lay terrace decking yourself. Incorrect installation of a terrace board - how to avoid mistakes? Decking mounting technology

House and plot

More recently, natural wood was mainly used to finish the floor on the terrace, near the pool and in the gazebo, but now it is at the peak of popularity. terrace board made of wood-polymer composite. This material in its appearance is in no way inferior to natural wood, and in terms of such characteristics as strength, reliability, durability and preservation of its linear parameters, it is much superior to it. In order for the terrace board to serve for a long time and reliably, it must be laid correctly.

Although WPC decking is an analogue of natural wood, the process of laying it will differ from the installation of ordinary boards. A feature of this material is the presence in its composition of a large amount of natural wood, therefore when temperature and humidity change, it will change its size.

During installation, be sure to leave gaps, and the fastening of the boards should be carried out only with the help of special mounting adhesives and self-tapping screws. Due to the fact that the material is used outdoors, fasteners must be stainless steel.

Under the flooring on which the decking is laid, there must be free space to ensure ventilation. Since this coating is used outdoors, it is necessary to take care of good drainage, for this the base slope is about 1-2 degrees.

For better water flow logs are installed parallel to the descent of water. If the descent cannot be made, then to create a drainage system, when installing a log, plastic supports are placed under them.

The expansion gaps must not be covered with any material. The flooring is not allowed to come into contact with the ground or lawn, it is recommended that the distance from the boards to the ground be at least 8 cm.

Before installation decking board, it is necessary to correctly prepare the ground, it can be like a concrete screed treated with a waterproofing agent, concrete slabs, a pillow of sand or gravel, on which the WPC logs are then laid.

If laying is carried out on logs, then the soil under the flooring must be treated with herbicides in order to completely remove the plants, or it can be covered with a special material that will not allow weeds to germinate.

The basis for the terrace board can serve as:

  • concrete posts or blocks that are laid on a compacted bed of sand or gravel;
  • prepared base with sand cushion, concrete screed;
  • monolithic concrete base;
  • frame made of aluminum, metal logs or other materials that can withstand the corresponding loads
  • operated roof.

Technology and types of fastening

The simplest way is the classic installation, in this case the boards are mounted parallel to one another or at an angle of 30-45 degrees, which minimizes material waste. Even a beginner can cope with this task.

When laying deck way, the boards are mounted in a chaotic manner, but after 3-4 rows they repeat the end seam. The seam should overlap with the next row no less than the width of the board. Material consumption will be minimal, pieces with a length of more than 50 cm can be used.

When deck laying, the lag consumption increases, but an unusual and durable coating is obtained, it is convenient to use it on large areas if there are many obstacles.

Checkerboard used in difficult areas and saves material. The symmetry of the seams is carried out through one or several rows, the transverse seam can be repeated through a row in the middle or with an offset of 1/3 of the width of the board through two rows.

By doing multidirectional mounting boards are laid perpendicular to each other. This method is recommended to be used on sites that have a large length and small width. artistic montage it is difficult to do it yourself, since this work requires special skills, but with its help you can create various ornaments and patterns.

This coating can be attached in several ways:

  • with a closed method special clamps are used, they are inserted into the grooves of the boards and attached to the logs with self-tapping screws;
  • with open method, fastening is carried out with screws with melts, which are screwed into the board from the front side and so it is attached to the log.

Tools and materials

To perform the work, you will need a standard set of tools:

  • electric jigsaw or circular saw;
  • drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • building level;
  • roulette;
  • pencil;
  • mallet;
  • extension.
In addition, you will need to purchase the following materials:

The process of mounting a polymer board, instructions

At first preparing a flat surface it can be concrete slabs, screed or sand cushion. Be sure to make a slope of the base or for drainage, it will be necessary to place supports under the logs. When laying on the ground, use a material that will not allow weeds to germinate.

For laying WPC decking boards it is necessary to use special composite logs. If the length of the surface to be covered is large, then the logs are laid end-to-end, they are not connected to each other and a gap of 6-7 mm is left.

A gap is also left between all fixed stops. The distance between the lags should be about 300-350 mm, if the load on the floor is high, then it is reduced to 250 mm, and with diagonal laying, the distance is 200 mm.

Logs are laid on a clean, dry and even base parallel to the descent of water.

The fastening of the boards is carried out perpendicular to the lags, starter clips are used to fix the first board. It is impossible to screw in the screws very strongly; the first board is attached to the starting clamp. Further installation is carried out using clips that are fixed on the logs.

It is necessary to leave a gap between the longitudinal joints, if the terrace is long, then the boards are laid end to end butt and a gap of about 6 mm is also left. The last board is cut to size, after which it is fixed to the log with self-tapping screws, screwed in at an angle of 45-50 degrees. This fastening will then be closed with a corner or an end plate.

The gap between the profile and the fixed limiter must be at least 2 cm.

The board can protrude no more than 50 mm beyond the edge of the log, the end part is closed with a bar or corner, side plugs can be used.

Roof decking

After installing the operated flat roof, you can proceed to the stage of laying the finish coating. Recently, most often for these purposes, a WPC decking board is used, which feels great outdoors, strong, reliable, durable and beautiful.

Regardless of which type of coating you choose, on the roof a parapet is installed around its entire perimeter, which will perform both a protective and decorative function.

For laying decking, you need prepare a flat base, which should have a slope to the edge of the roof. The base can be covered with a screed and leveled with crushed stone, after which install support posts and lags are already attached to them. The use of adjustable posts allows you to align the logs with respect to the sloped base, and as a result you will get an even finish.

Logs should be laid with the groove up, and the corrugated side to the base, this will help to install the self-tapping screw while attaching the clip in the center of the log.

You can not rigidly fasten the logs to the base, it is recommended to use steel or aluminum brackets, which are installed at intervals of 1 m. It is very convenient to use a decking board on an exploited roof, you practically do not need to take care of it, since all the dirt will be washed off during rain. Experts recommend planning the creation and arrangement of an operated roof at the design stage of building a house.

Operation and care

Caring for such a coating is very simple, for this a brush is used, the movements of which are performed in the direction of laying the boards. Household sinks can be used, but the water pressure must not exceed 80 bar. Do not use solvents, aggressive detergents or stain removers.

It is necessary to monitor the cleanliness of the gaps, otherwise moss may appear in them, in order to prevent the development of moss, it is necessary to regularly clean the surface. In order for the flooring to wear out evenly, it is recommended to periodically rearrange the objects on it.

If greasy stains appear, then they must be removed immediately, for this household degreasing agents are used. When a stain appears, it can be sanded, and after a while, the discolored place will equal the color of the main coating. To remove scratches, you can use a metal brush, but before that, the boards must be well wetted, over time the color of the treated area will even out.

Summarizing

When installing a WPC decking board, mistakes are often made: they do not leave ventilation gaps between the joists, clamp the fasteners very tightly, do not make a slope for water drainage, and do not leave a gap between the boards.

If you carry out the correct installation of such a coating, then, despite the use of a terrace board in the open air, it will serve you for several decades, while requiring minimal maintenance, and it always looks beautiful.

In contact with

WPC structures are very different from ordinary wood in terms of strength and resistance to external environmental factors. The wood composite also does not rot and cannot be damaged by pests such as fungus, insects, etc., which makes the maintenance of the material impossibly simple.

Installation of a terrace board can be carried out even without the help of specialists, the main thing is that the necessary tools are available.

Preparation for installation and rules of work

Before proceeding with the direct installation, it is recommended to put the wood-polymer composite for two days where the repair will be carried out. This action is necessary so that the WPC is at the same temperature with the future environment. It is highly not recommended to carry out any installation work in winter, at temperatures below zero division.

In order for the material to be well ventilated and serve many times longer, small indentations should be made between the coating and the base at a level of 2-3 centimeters.

Before mounting the deck board in dirty areas where there is sand, grass, earth, they must be thoroughly cleaned. The base for the composite is best concrete, and the components are certified.

When installing a composite decking board, there is no special meaning for the sides, however, you can choose which one will be laid on top, smooth or corrugated.

Arrangement of logs and surfaces for flooring boards

Mounting Tools:

  • Logs 40*27 mm
  • Staples (initial and intermediate)
  • Self-tapping screws
  • end strips
  • Stubs
  • corners
  • Level
  • Roulette, pencil
  • Screwdriver
  • Drill
  • Drill

Foundation preparation

To maximize the life of the wood-polymer composite, good drainage is essential. The concrete base for laying needs at least 10 centimeters thick. For a trouble-free withdrawal of precipitation, it is desirable to make a slight slope (1-2 degrees will be enough) parallel to the lags. After the concrete has dried, check if the water is running. Otherwise, the liquid will begin to accumulate, create unnecessary trouble. If the base design does not need to install a log along the course of the drain, then leave small spaces between the logs (2-3 centimeters will be enough). Water will flow through it.

Watch the video, step-by-step work on laying the decking board:

When installing a wood-polymer composite on a roof, take a closer look at the water-resistant layer. Fasteners should have minimal contact with it. If the base was already prepared and the drain path was not followed, cut channels 2 centimeters deep.

Installation lag

Using anchor bolts, install the log on the concrete base. The maximum distance between two lags is 40 centimeters. Keep an expansion gap between the obstacle (wall, threshold, etc.) so that the material can expand in the warm season.

When installing the log in a diagonal position or at an oblique angle (1 degree of inclination is not taken into account), the distance between the pair must be reduced to 25 millimeters.

Please note: it is forbidden to use logs or WPC as a supporting structure!

Installation

The installation of decking decking is quite simple and obvious:

  1. The board is placed on the log
  2. The initial clip is placed on the log with a self-tapping screw
  3. The WPC is inserted into the groove of the clip.

Each next decking is mounted in the same way. If you reach the point where the length of the boards is less than 0.8 meters, it is recommended to stabilize the structure using at least three support logs. The edges should not go beyond the level of the lag by more than 5 centimeters. The distance between the WPC and the barrier should not be less than 10 millimeters. Otherwise, with temperature changes, the material will expand, rest against the barrier and deform.

We watch the video, mounting the board on the logs, detailed instructions:

If you have plans for mounting a terrace board for a large terrace, you have already purchased long boards, make sure that the ends of both sides rest on the log and are well secured with clips. Do not forget about the gap between them.

Completion of installation

After the installation of the larch terrace board is completed, and all the elements are well fixed, it is worth taking care of the little things that will smooth out all the existing “jambs” and give the structure a more attractive look.

Watch the video, the tips of the masters:

The first step is to deal with the stubs. Installing end caps will give the structure a more harmonious look and close all the cracks at the edges.

If you consider it unnecessary to buy special plugs, you can get by with a cheaper option - end strips. Planks can be easily matched to any color. The strips and plugs are fixed with self-tapping screws.

Another option for hiding gaps after installing a WPC decking board is a composite corner. It is very similar in design to the plinth. But do not forget about the gap compensation when installing them. When using elements of this type, a little more clearance should be left between the barrier and the end of the board.

After installing the plugs, remove chips, dust and other elements, wipe the surface of the coating with a slightly damp cloth.

Please note: improper assembly and operation of terrace boards greatly reduces their service life. An ordinary board with proper care will last more than 25 years.

Terrace boards in most cases are painted with high quality pigments. Due to the use of lingin, like any natural product, they will slightly lose color in 3-4 months, but they will remain the same original and textured. After this time, the color will remain and will no longer succumb to the weakening of color for many years.

Buy components from one manufacturer

Terrace board made of wood-polymer composite, after installation by a professional, resists bad weather, sun, precipitation, insects very well. No special care is required for this technique.

The rough side of the material is not able to drive a rolling pin or anything else into the leg. Wood with building material is used as flour, and wood textures are created artificially.

Advantages

  • Persistence. WPC tolerates scratches, chips, household chemicals, stains, precipitation, warm and cold air, water, etc. well.
  • Strength. The floor of this material can withstand a weight of one ton per square meter. So much strong structure was achieved by modifying the composition of the material.
  • Durability. The minimum guaranteed life span is 25 years, taking into account temperature conditions within -50 + 70 degrees.
  • Flexibility. During installation, the wood-polymer composite can easily take the desired position. To sheathe stairs, ledges, corners, etc.
  • Care. There is no need to paint the material or clean them with special tools. They are perfectly cleaned with a slightly damp sponge or microfiber.
  • Simplicity. Easy installation, which even a person who has never held a construction tool can handle.
  • Appearance. A huge palette of colors and texture solutions can satisfy gourmets with a broad design outlook.

And among the huge number of pluses, there is at least a small, but minus. In this case, the disadvantage is the high cost of the finishing material. If we compare decking and ordinary wood, then the difference in price can be 3-5 times.

Care rules

The composite board must not be flooded for more than 4 consecutive days.

When washing serious stains that will not be wiped with a regular floor cloth, use cleaning products without bleach. Brushes can only be used with soft bristles. Absolutely avoid the use of spatulas and metal, as there is a chance to damage the surface and spoil the appearance.

Small bumps or scratches can be rubbed with fine-grained sandpaper.

Conclusion

Any person who knows how to hold a tool can cope with the installation of a terrace board, but it is necessary to observe the gaps and take into account the placement of additional devices. Do not forget to hide the cracks after installation. The cladding of the walls of the site is perfect for those who so lack nature around them, and always want to be in an atmosphere that creates relaxation and tranquility.

Terrace surface preparation

Before the beginning installation of WPC terrace board, make sure that the surface is solid and level (maximum recommended deviation is no more than 5mm). In the case of laying on a solid concrete base, in order to prevent cracking or bending of the log when drilling it, it is advisable to use a metal fastener made of galvanized or stainless steel to prevent rust.

Adaptation, preparation and checking of decking

  1. Before installing the terrace, it is necessary to give the terrace board time to adapt to the environment within 1-2 days. Put the decking on the joists. They should be located on a flat surface no more than 40 cm apart.
  2. Installation must be carried out by at least two people.
  3. Do not install WPC decking at temperatures below 0°C.
  4. It is forbidden to use WPC terrace boards as a support or base for balconies, stairs, etc. In such cases, special measures must be taken in accordance with existing standards. WPC terrace boards can be laid on existing balconies, stairs, etc.
  5. At the place of installation, as with natural wood, it is necessary to ensure sufficient air circulation so that the space under the floor can dry properly. To do this, air must circulate at various points on the deck and a sufficient number of ventilation openings must remain open.
  6. Terrace boards may have some color differences due to the presence of particles of natural wood in the material from which they are made. Such differences are found in the products of all suppliers of WPC decking. Minor color differences may occur in different production batches of products. Coloring and brushing of product samples are not strictly established. In this regard, it is recommended to use boards only from the same production batch within the same project. The color of the decking changes during the first weeks after installation. This is a natural process due to a combination of moisture absorption and exposure to ultraviolet rays, which may cause color differences between previously installed boards and those that have not yet been exposed to sunlight. These differences will disappear over time. In connection with all of the above, color differences are clearly not covered by our warranty.

Carefully check each WPC terrace board before installation. An installed board that was damaged before it was installed (and nevertheless installed) is not covered by the warranty! The warranty in all cases is limited to the supply of replacement boards.

About expansion gaps (longitudinal seams)

Longitudinal seams when laying WPC terrace boards are necessary in order to ensure drainage (drainage of water from the surface of the terrace system), as well as convenient cleaning of the surface. In addition, expansion joints provide a slight thermal expansion / contraction of the WPC decking profile with temperature changes in the environment.

When laying terrace decking, there are two installation options: seam and seamless.

suture- is formed during the installation of the terrace using a stainless kleimer or a plastic clip. The seam size is 4-5mm.

This installation option is a prerequisite for assembling a terrace in the open air and in places of high humidity. This method provides the maximum service life of products.

Seamless- a variant of the arrangement of a closed terrace or installation of decking in the premises. Fastening is carried out with a stainless kleimer with a gap between the boards up to 1-2 mm. This method eliminates the ingress of debris into the system, and also makes it look more attractive and convenient to use.

The main rules for installing a WPC decking board

  1. CIRCULATION- it is necessary to ensure sufficient air circulation under the deck, and also to prevent direct contact of structural elements with the ground or grass cover
  2. TEMPERATURE EXPANSIONS- it is necessary to take into account the expansion along the length and width of all structural elements, due to temperature and humidity differences during operation
  3. DRAINAGE- when installing the terrace, observe the slope of the flooring surface of 1-3% for better drainage.
  4. INSTALLATION- laying is carried out at an air temperature not lower than 0ºС.

INSTALLATION OF WPC TERRACE BOARD

Installation of mounting logs from WPC

Mounting logs made of WPC should not be too long, the recommended length is 3 meters. The step between the central axes of the lag rows should be 33 cm, maximum 35-40 cm. Logs should be installed with a small gap at the ends. The gap between the ends of the supporting logs should be 20mm.

  1. The joists should not be considered as a supporting structure, they themselves should be supported by something along their entire length, except when the flooring is mounted on pedestals (supports). Between the pedestals, a distance of no more than 40 cm (center to center) must be observed. It is impossible for the logs to be embedded in concrete, glued or otherwise attached to each other.
  2. It is impossible for the logs to be in the water.
  3. The lag is laid with the corrugated side down and the groove up. The groove allows you to install a screw with a clip exactly in the center of the mounting lag.
  4. Logs are laid at a distance of at least 10 mm in length and width from any fixed structure. Between the lags there must be a gap of at least 20 mm.
  5. Condensate and water run off along the deck boards, i.e. perpendicular to the lags. Therefore, gaps should be left between the transverse lags to ensure good flow.
  6. Rigid fastening of the lag to the base is not allowed. To press the lag, it is necessary to use stainless steel or aluminum brackets, with an interval of about 1m.
  7. The ends of each board should rest on the log. Fasten the ends to avoid any possible deformation under the board's own weight, and also to avoid the risk of the board breaking when the ledge is loaded. When laying boards longitudinally, both edges must rest on separate parallel joists.
  8. If the logs cannot be attached to the base (for example, on the roof), they can be laid and fixed on pedestals (supports) located at a distance of no more than 40 cm from each other (center-to-center). In this case, aluminum logs should be used instead of conventional wood composite logs. Make a frame (frame) of aluminum logs (located perpendicular to each other) to prevent the boards from sagging towards the center.

Compensation gap

Be sure to leave room in advance for the linear expansion of the boards. Where the decking is installed next to a wall, the gap between the edge of the decking surface and the wall should be 20 to 30mm. Considering the thermal expansion or contraction properties of WPC main decking profiles, the recommended length for main decking profiles is 3m.

Fastening the board with a clamp. Terrace assembly.

Before screwing the screw into the mounting lag, it is necessary to make a hole of a smaller diameter with a drill, no more than ¾ of the screw diameter.

For a more dense and uniform fixation of the board, use a mallet. Tap on the side closest to you to obtain an even gap along the entire length of the main profile.

At the joints of the ends of the main profile, use double rows of support logs so that each end of the board rests on its own support log. The width of the gap between the rows of support profiles should be between 3 and 5 mm.

When laying the last row of the board, where the edge cannot be fixed with a clip, it is allowed to screw in a self-tapping screw / drive in a nail from the side of the main profile of the board - at a distance of 2-3 mm from the edge.

If the main profile protrudes along the length of the last row of supporting logs, then the length of the part of the decking protruding from above the log should be less than 2 cm. Otherwise, deformations, fractures or other defects associated with the weight load falling on such places are inevitable.

The final step in the installation of the terrace is the edging of the terrace with a wpk corner or an end plank around the perimeter. Fastening the corner or strip is carried out with a self-tapping screw.

Installation of a finishing corner or end plate

The corner and the end plate are used to finish the terrace along the perimeter. Ennoble the appearance of the terrace flooring, hiding the view of structural elements. Unlike the WPC corner, the end plank does not have a protrusion on the terrace surface.

  1. Make sure that the joists at the edge of the deck are at least 5mm longer than the planks.
  2. Saw off the corner or end plank to size and place along the edge of the deck, keeping the distance between the board and the baseboard at least 5 mm.
  3. Screw them tightly to the joists using long stainless steel screws.

OPERATION AND CARE OF WPC TERRACE BOARD

  1. For regular maintenance, use a brush or high pressure cleaner (max. 80 bar). When cleaning, clean the boards in the direction they are laid. Do not use a high pressure industrial dirt washer and do not bring the water jet too close to avoid damage to the boards. If necessary, a mild detergent can be used. Under no circumstances should solvents, stain removers, paints or polishes be used.
  2. To avoid the appearance of moss, make sure that the gaps between the boards are clean and the water drains well. You can also prevent the appearance of moss by regularly cleaning the flooring.
  3. It is recommended to regularly rearrange flower pots and other items to avoid uneven aging of the flooring.
  4. Grease and oil stains are best and fastest removed with a household degreaser. Do not allow stains to dry out or penetrate into the panel material. If the stain has dried, carefully remove it with a high-pressure cleaner and sand in the direction of the grooves. After a while, the discolored area should even out in color.
  5. Scratches can be removed with a wire brush. First, wet the boards as much as possible to avoid discoloration. Gently go over the entire length of the board to remove any scratches. The resulting slight discolouration will fade over time.
  6. In shady or partially covered areas, wet streaks may appear, which will eventually disappear under the influence of ultraviolet light or bad weather conditions. This will not affect the actual quality characteristics of the board, so any complaints and claims in this regard will not be considered. This effect will disappear over time, but it is impossible to completely avoid it. You can speed up its disappearance by brushing.

NOTE

  1. In the case of using a WPC decking board for gazebos, terraces, etc. it is not recommended to use wooden logs, since the thermal expansion of a log made of natural wood differs from the characteristics of WPC materials, which can lead to a violation of the geometry or integrity of the terrace decking.
  2. At the junction of the ends of the terrace boards it is necessary to lay two parallel support logs. That is, the edge of each board rests on its log.
  3. During installation, we recommend to mount each next row of boards in a run-up, with joints offset by at least 1/3 of the board length.
  4. If during installation you used wedges between the boards and the walls, then don't forget to delete them.
  5. board end should lie on the floor and attached to it with a clip or kleimer.
  6. It is not recommended to mount the corner on the edge of the step, as it performs more of a decorative function. We recommend installing an aluminum corner on the edge of the step.
  7. In order to avoid getting coals on the terrace board (for example, from a barbecue), put a metal sheet under the brazier itself.

An excellent type of outdoor flooring is a terrace board. It differs from alternative options in ease of use, good anti-slip properties and excellent appearance. We will talk about the varieties, advantages of using and the rules for installing parquet boards later.

Terrace board - characteristics and advantages

Terrace board is a finishing material used for laying outdoors, preferably on a terrace. Another name for decking is decking, although it is more commonly referred to as garden parquet.

For the manufacture of terrace boards, a wood-polymer composite is used, which contributes to the preservation of its appearance for a long time.

If we compare a terrace board with an ordinary floor board, then the requirements for the first one are much higher, since the terrace is a place located in open space, and the impact of external factors on its finish is much higher. The first requirement is the mechanical and chemical resistance of the boards, since the terrace is constantly exposed to moisture, sun, temperature changes or rough shoes.

The construction of the supporting structure of the terrace occurs at the time of the construction of the terrace itself, therefore the overlap of the lag character has a long length, which directly depends on the installed boards. The most common version of the decking board is its thickness of 5 cm. To relieve tension from the inside of the decking board, several compensation grooves are located on its inside, and on the outside there are a small number of grooves, the depth of which reaches two millimeters. Thanks to this, the surface will not be too slippery and will remain durable for a long time.

During the installation of the terrace board, it is required to leave small gaps, so its installation with the tenon method is impossible.

The terrace board is made from the same materials as the floor board, only if it is made from pine, it must be pre-treated with special agents that will protect the surface from external influences. It is preferable to choose breeds in the form of oak, larch, cedar or sequoia.

Especially popular is the terrace board, which is based on a wood-polymer composite, which is distinguished by improved performance and durability - up to fifty years.

Among the main advantages in using a decking board are:

  • presentable appearance;
  • pleasant sensations while walking on the surface barefoot;
  • almost complete absence of slip during precipitation;
  • the surface of the material is not able to get very hot even during a hot sunny day;
  • environmentally friendly material (in case a wooden terrace board is used).

There are two types of deck boards:

  • wooden;
  • wood-composite.

Among the advantages of the second option over the first one should be highlighted:

  • resistance to the appearance of mold or fungus;
  • resistance to various diseases and insects;
  • lack of susceptibility to temperature changes or exposure to solar radiation;
  • no swelling or drying out;
  • preservation of shape and color for a long time;
  • there is no need for constant seasonal care;
  • does not require painting or coating with special tools;
  • there are no defects such as knots, resin pockets or cracks;
  • there is no risk of getting a splinter;
  • it is possible to install the coating without leaving gaps, so the grass will not grow through the cracks, and the boards will not deform;
  • resistant to chemicals, abrasive detergents, alcohol, etc.;
  • possible combination with underfloor heating.

The main types of decking

In relation to the material from which the terrace board is made, it is divided into:

  • wooden;
  • thermally processed;
  • composite.

The first option involves the use of natural wood for the manufacture of boards. Larch decking is a fairly popular type of this finishing material. This type of wood has the properties of moisture resistance, density, anti-slip, resistance to fungus and mold. In addition, when larch gets wet, it becomes stone.

When arranging the terrace flooring, you should continue finishing in the same style in which the whole house is designed. Try to match the color of the house decoration with the terrace. Larch is characterized by a light tone. But, one of its advantages is the possibility of tinting. A large number of mixtures are presented on the construction market, with the help of which it is possible to paint a decking board.

Thermally processed terrace boards have several other properties, in contrast to ordinary wood. The process of their production involves heating the wood to more than 190 degrees Celsius. Steam changes the characteristics of the wood. Thus, it is possible to obtain a material that is highly environmentally friendly and does not contain harmful components in its composition.

Thermally treated wood differs from the standard one in higher resistance to moisture, good thermal insulation properties, resistance to decay, mold and fungus. In addition, the wooden texture of the tree becomes clearer and more pronounced. Therefore, its color and pattern are pleasant to the touch.

Wood-polymer decking is an artificial material, which is produced using a combination of various types of fillers, fiberglass, sawdust, shavings, wood flour with resins.

For filling organic mineral fillers, a binder material is used in the form of polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride. It is possible to use grain starches, paper production waste. The coloring of this kind of terrace board is carried out during its production. In the process of connecting all the components, dyes are added to the thick mixture, which determine the color of the future polymer terrace board.

Before proceeding with the direct installation of the terrace board, you should determine the place of its installation. It depends on the hardness of the material, if it is not indicated on the instructions or in the technical features, ask the seller about this criterion.

For example, for a balcony, loggia or in a place with low traffic, a medium-density decking board is laid. In addition, near the pool, where they mostly walk barefoot, this type of board is also used.

Please note that its moisture resistance depends on the density of the board, since boards that are too dense are practically unable to absorb moisture and are characterized by low volatility. When laying a loose board in places with a high operational load, it deforms over time.

In places where there are a large number of people, it is necessary to install decking boards with a high density. These include areas near gazebos, houses or terraces.

The work on laying the decking board is divided into several stages. First of all, a solid foundation is prepared, for the arrangement of which the top layer of soil is removed, and a sand and gravel cushion is laid, which is well rammed.

Do not lay the deck board directly on the ground base. It is possible to use paving slabs as the main element for the installation of decking. In this case, a base of logs is laid on the surface of the tile, fixed with a screwdriver and dowels. The average interval between the lags is 35 cm, if the laying of the terrace board is longitudinal, then at least 45 cm. The lags serve as a support for the lag. Please note that a technological gap should occupy 2 cm, in the form of gutters or curbs. The installation of adjustable logs is appropriate when the terrain is uneven and has defects.

The total length of the laying site should be characterized by a slope of one to one and a half percent of the total area. Thus, it will be possible to ensure the runoff of water during rains or showers.

After completion of the preparatory work, the direct installation of the boards is carried out. For their installation, special hidden fasteners are used, in the form of brackets. Stainless steel is used for manufacturing, and fixing occurs using self-tapping screws. It is this type of fastener that helps to leave the desired gap of 0.5-0.7 cm in size.

Please note that the thickness of the decking board significantly affects the laying distance of the joists. With a board thickness of 1.9-2 cm, the distance is 400 mm, if the thickness is more than 25 mm, then the interval between laying the log is 600 mm.

When sawing a decking board, the raw end parts are coated with a high-quality wax emulsion.

To prevent the board from cracking, holes for fasteners are made in advance. The terrace board is attached to the surface in two ways:

  • open;
  • hidden.

The second option is less common, as it appeared recently and requires special skills to carry it out. Although it has a significant advantage over the open installation method. This is a higher attractiveness of appearance. In addition, boards attached in this way are more firmly and securely fastened.

Terrace board do-it-yourself laying

Before starting installation work, check the evenness, cleanliness and dryness of the surface on which it is installed. The best option is a platform made of concrete with a slight slope.

The installation of the log is made in accordance with the flow of water. When installing the decking, it is immediately laid on the logs, choosing the order of the boards. When installing a decking board, in a place of constant exposure to moisture, a compensation gap should be provided, otherwise it will not be needed.

Tip: Before starting the assembly of the whole structure, it is recommended to allow the board to acclimatize in the conditions in which it will be installed. To do this, leave the material at the installation site for two days so that it gets used to the humidity and air temperature.

Take care of the presence of a ventilation gap under the decking space. Its size reaches three centimeters, so it will be possible to achieve free space, which will reduce the risk of fungus or mold on the boards.

During temperature changes, the board shrinks or increases in size, so a small expansion gap is necessary.

To carry out the installation of a terrace board, use:

  • lags;
  • terrace board;
  • initial brackets;
  • intermediate brackets;
  • screws, self-tapping screws;
  • plugs;
  • end finishing materials;
  • corners;
  • electric drill;
  • a set of drills;
  • screwdriver;
  • measuring tape;
  • pencil;
  • saw;
  • level.

In order for the terrace board to serve its owners for a long time, care should be taken to have good drainage laid under it. The best option is a concrete base, at least 10 cm thick. Before laying, you should make sure that water does not linger on the base, but flows freely along it.

If the lags are installed perpendicular to the drain, then between them, a clearance is required to ensure unhindered flow.

If the terrace board is mounted on the roof, then you should make sure that there is a waterproof layer that is not capable of destroying elements in the form of fasteners. When laying a terrace board on a flat surface, the strobes are cut at a certain slope.

Installation of a terrace board - instructions for carrying out

The logs are laid on a concrete base and attached to it with anchor bolts, the maximum step size is 400 mm. Between the lags and the wall, it is necessary to have a compensation gap of 10-20 mm. If the terrace board is supposed to be installed vertically, then the distance between the lags is 2.5 cm. The maximum laying step is 400 mm, when installing the deck board in places with increased operational loads, this value is reduced to 250 mm.

With the help of self-tapping screws, mounting clips are attached to the lags. A terrace board is installed in the slot base of the clip. If the terrace board installed on the surface is longer than 800 mm, then the number of lags on which it is installed increases to three pieces. The end part of the board should not go beyond the lag by more than 50 mm. The distance between the wall and the end section of the board is 10-20 mm.

When arranging a terrace with long boards, both of its ends must rest securely on the surface of the log and be fixed to them with clips.

Corner joints are processed in two ways:

  • with the help of end caps - making the appearance of the board harmonious;
  • using end strips - fixed with self-tapping screws and made in accordance with a certain color of the coating.

In addition, it is possible to use a composite corner similar to a plinth.

At the end of all work on the installation of a terrace board, take care of removing dust and chips from its surface. To clean the flooring, use a normal detergent designed for use on floors. And remember that doing all the work correctly, the terrace board will function for a long time.
