Peonies planted in well-fertilized soil may not be fertilized in the first year and several subsequent years. After transplantation, varietal qualities appear for 2-3 years! The most common way to propagate peonies is by dividing the rhizomes, which should be done in August or early September. In autumn, with the onset of persistent frosts, approximately in mid-October, the stalks of peonies are cut off, leaving stumps 1-2 cm high above the buds. For the winter, peonies are covered with a layer of peat or immature compost. Mature plants do not need to be covered. When the soil thaws in the spring, the warming shelter is removed, as the buds quickly start to grow.

Herbaceous peonies include hybrid plants, as well as varieties from milky-flowered peony.

The height of the plant can reach one meter. Powerful peony roots look like cones. They are very strong, like the rhizome. Several stems grow. The green color of the leaves, although their shades may be different.

Agricultural technology

The plant loves light and should be planted in open sunny spaces. Otherwise, the peony will not bloom. Light shade is allowed during the noon hours.

The plant does not tolerate stagnant moisture - its root system rots. Therefore, peonies should be planted in areas where groundwater does not come close to the surface.

For cultivation, loamy soils with a slightly acidic environment are optimal. If the soil is clay, sand should be added. On sandy soils - clay. The acidic environment is alkalized with lime (about 300-350 grams). The plant requires regular fertilizing and watering. Soil mulching is required.

The plant is usually propagated by cuttings, dividing the bush and layering. The second way is the most efficient. The best time to divide the bush is from mid-August to mid-September. To do this, the bush is dug up, measured ten centimeters from the root and cut off. The roots are washed and placed in the shade for several hours.

A delenka with two or three buds and a rhizome up to fifteen centimeters long is suitable for planting. Smaller specimens require additional care, and large ones take root worse.

Before disembarkation, the material is disinfected for about 30 minutes. To do this, use an infusion of garlic or a saturated solution of potassium permanganate. Then the delenka is kept in a solution of heteroauxin. For this, 1 tablet is dissolved in 10 liters of water. Soaking time is about 12 hours. After that, the delenka needs to be dried and rubbed with charcoal. Then it is planted in a hole, on the bottom of which a pillow of sand is poured. The distance from the kidneys to the surface should not exceed 5 centimeters. The recess with the division is covered with soil and watered. Before the winter cold, planting is sprinkled with peat by 5-7 centimeters. With the onset of spring, there is no need to rush to remove the peat mulch - it is important to wait for the appearance of red sprouts. As soon as the shoots rise a little, the peat can be removed. Important! The sprouts are very fragile, so you need to act carefully.

Peonies can be planted and transplanted only in autumn. The optimal distance between the holes is 1 meter. It is not recommended to plant peonies closer, because over time they grow and will interfere with each other.

The size of the pit is a cube with sides of 60 centimeters. At 40 centimeters, it is filled with a mixture of peat, sand, humus and earth in equal proportions (usually 1 bucket of each component). Half a kilogram of bone meal or a quarter kilogram of double superphosphate is also added there, as well as a tablespoon of iron sulfate, 1 liter of wood ash and a teaspoon of potash. The remaining volume of the pit-cube is filled with garden soil. It is compacted and watered.
