DIY frame garage: step-by-step instructions with photo report. Stages of building a garage from timber with your own hands Build a garage from timber with your own hands

Culinary recipes for the garden and at home

Many owners of country houses prefer to build wooden garages on their property, since these structures not only allow you to store a car, reliably protecting it from the negative effects of the environment, but also act as an ideal addition to the architectural design of the house.

In addition, in such a building you can conveniently place large items, various tools and comfortably arrange a place for vehicle repairs. It is worth noting that the process of installing a wooden structure is simple and can be done with your own hands.

Features and Benefits

A wooden garage is a multifunctional structure, the frame of which is sheathed with timber or boards. Thanks to modern design, such a garage can easily accommodate 2 cars, using a minimum amount of land.

Unlike brickwork, construction from profiled timber is inexpensive, and finishing work can be done using both new and recycled materials.

Assembly of all garage parts is carried out quickly and does not require special training or the use of complex equipment.

The installation of a wooden garage is also chosen in the case when the land already has wooden buildings made in the same style. Therefore, in order to create a general image in the landscape design and not destroy the harmony, the owners of country houses have to build a wooden garage with their own hands. In order for such a structure to serve as a reliable place for storing a car, it is advisable to place it in a fenced or guarded area, this will help to avoid burglary and theft.

The main advantages of a wooden garage include a fairly large number of properties.

  • Strength and durability.
  • Stylish look. This structure fits perfectly into the design of the site.
  • Reliable protection of transport from changes in temperature and moisture.
  • Fire resistance. Modern buildings are treated with a chemical composition, so they are “not afraid” of fire and wood insects.
  • Economical. To install the structure, you can choose any type of wood, and there is no need to hire builders, which, in turn, significantly saves the family budget.
  • Easy to install. The construction work is completed quickly and the installation of the garage is carried out “cleanly”, upon completion there is no debris left behind that can take a long time to clean up.

  • Possibility of different interior finishes. Since vehicle owners spend a lot of time in the garage, its interior should be cozy. To give the room a homely warmth, the walls inside the building can be decorated in an original way. Thus, you will get an additional room in which it will be pleasant to relax after work.
  • Huge selection of projects. Recently, many buildings of various sizes, shapes and styles have been created. 6x4 m garages are extremely popular; thanks to their compact size, you can not only save on material, but also rationally use the land on the site.
  • Environmental friendliness. Wood is a natural raw material that fills the room with a pleasant smell and does not emit harmful substances.

Design selection

Before you start building a wooden garage, you need to decide on its appearance, which will determine the visual perception of the building and its combination with other objects on the site.

Today, the following types of structures are distinguished:

  • frame;
  • national team;
  • log house

The most beautiful and expensive structure is considered to be a log house. This garage is distinguished by high aesthetics; its wooden finish is easily combined with other materials. In addition, the building has good strength indicators, since it is installed monolithically, and the beams fit tightly together. The structure is also resistant to mechanical damage, its walls are difficult to break through or drill through, which is important when protecting the garage from burglars. Installation of a log house does not require much time and, as a rule, is completed from 3 to 7 days.

A good option for a garage is a prefabricated structure made of timber. Its installation is carried out using a special technology. First, a parallelepiped is made along the perimeter of the future building, then boards are attached to it on both sides. Externally, such a garage can be covered with siding, and the inside can be finished with any material.

As for the frame structure, it is considered the most advanced type in construction. Unlike a prefabricated garage, when installing a parallelepiped, the location of windows, doors and gates is immediately taken into account. The parts are assembled in such a way that the plane of the frame looks like a chessboard. In addition, all internal floors are made according to the cellular principle, which significantly increases the strength of the building and makes it warm.

Foundation

Typically, when constructing wooden buildings, a strip foundation is used, and installing a garage is no exception. This foundation extends the life of the building. If the finishing of the structure will include materials other than wood, then it is best to choose a monolithic foundation. It can be either poured with concrete or laid using ready-made slabs.

The only drawback of such a base is poor thermal conductivity, but since the garage is a non-residential premises, this will not be a big problem.

Before you start pouring the base, you must first draw drawings and carefully prepare the place. To do this, the construction site is cleared of debris, then a 40 cm depression is made in the soil. In this case, it is important to make the surface flat and smooth. The width of the recess should have a small margin: 150x150 cm on all sides. A cushion of river sand and crushed stone no more than 160 mm thick must be laid under the foundation. First, you should compact the sand, and then evenly distribute the layer of crushed stone.

After the cushion is ready, you need to install formwork along the contour of the future structure. It is best to make it from vertical bars, leaving a gap of 20 cm on each side between them. In addition, you need to pay attention to the height of the formwork; it must not rise too high above the soil level; the optimal indicator for its height is 200 cm. Since The frame and base of the foundation will be a reinforcing mesh; it is prepared in advance and cells measuring 100x100 mm are formed. You need to place a brick under the reinforcement bars and pour concrete so that it covers only half of it.

Subsequent stages of construction can be carried out after the foundation has completely dried. This usually takes several days.

Frame and roof

Most often, a single type of roof is chosen for installing wooden garages, since it does not pose a huge load on the frame and does not require additional reinforcement. If the room is planned to be used for two cars, then it is advisable to use special profiles coated with anti-corrosion mixtures for its base. As for the garage frame, before building it, you need not only to choose the technology and assembly location, but also to take into account the proximity to communications, climatic conditions and groundwater levels. It is also important to decide on the entry area and the type of gate.

As a rule, a wooden garage is built from glued or rounded timber. For work, it is recommended to purchase slats and boards with a moisture content of no more than 18%. In this case, beams measuring 100×50 mm are used for the bottom trim, 50×50 mm for longitudinal elements, and 100×100 mm for floors and rafters. Installation of the frame requires temporary fixation of the racks, this makes it possible to increase the rigidity of the fastening. Therefore, the racks are connected using metal corners and screws.

Construction

Installation of the frame structure begins with the bottom trim, which is carried out along the entire perimeter of the garage using beams. The surface of the tree must be covered with mastic and antiseptics. In addition, roofing material is placed under the lower trim. Corner posts are placed at the corners of the frame and secured to the frame using metal brackets.

Thus, the structure becomes durable and can withstand the load after sheathing.

After the corner posts are set, the top trim is carried out. In this case, you need to ensure that the supports have a clearly vertical position; for this it is recommended to use a level. Then the frame is strengthened with additional ribs. Boards with a cross section of 50×100 mm are placed between the lower and upper trim and fixed. The ribs can be attached either to steel corners or by completely or partially cutting out the beams. The distance between the ribs is calculated depending on the width of the finishing slabs that will serve as the walls of the garage.

Sheathing

Cladding the structure can only be done when the issue of thermal insulation has been resolved. If there are no plans to set up a workshop in the garage, then its walls do not need to be insulated. In this situation, it is enough to fill the voids and seams with polyurethane foam and nail the boards, leaving areas for windows and gates.

As for the internal cladding of the building, first they must lay sheets of vapor and thermal insulation, then decorative finishing is carried out from boards or any building material. Walls covered with clapboard or plasterboard look beautiful inside the garage.

Roofing device

Typically, the roof of a wooden garage is made in an angular shape, as this ensures good rainfall drainage. In addition, other design options can be used, the choice of which depends on the length and width of the building. Therefore, even at the stage of assembling the frame, you should carefully consider the type of future roof and draw a drawing of its model. Small garages are covered with a triangular roof and the puffs are slightly raised at the bottom. If the structure is large, then it is best to use crossbars or vertical supports for the roof.

The manufactured form is mounted on the top frame, taking a step every two meters. Fixation, as a rule, is carried out using special corners; the roof beams are attached from the inside of the garage to the rafters. A layer of waterproofing is applied on top of the blanks and a lathing is made, on which the coating itself will be laid in the future. A similar procedure is performed for a pitched roof, but its rafter systems may be different.

It is worth noting that a pitched roof is much worse in operation, as it creates uneven loads on the frame, so it is not advisable to install it.

Gate: options

An important issue when building a garage is the choice of gate. The type of their design is determined when drawing up the project and fits into the drawings. Today, several gate options are widely used.

  • Swing. This is the most popular type of design, which is characterized by its simplicity and convenience. Such gates consist of two panels, their construction is cheap and does not require special installation knowledge, so garage doors can be easily made with your own hands and sheathed with wood or profiled sheets.

The question of how to properly build a garage from timber is primarily of concern to owners of summer cottages. It is in the countryside that most car owners decide to build a wooden garage that fits well with neighboring buildings. Let us briefly consider the nuances of each stage of construction.

Choosing material for a wooden garage

If you have chosen timber as a material, then you need to correctly assess its cost and know the difference in characteristics. In general, it is usually divided into solid and glued samples.

Garage made of laminated veneer lumber

The main advantage is high performance indicators: strength, reliability, absence of cracking and warping of fibers. In addition, it is made on factory equipment, which ensures control over each of the technological processes and, accordingly, full compliance with the declared characteristics.

Also, laminated veneer lumber for buildings has a special groove along its entire length, which is called a “tongue-groove”. This allows you to build warm structures with windproof walls without the use of insulation. Despite such a large number of advantages, there is one significant drawback - buildings made from this material are much more expensive than other analogue materials.

Garage made of profiled timber

Profiled timber is a variant of solid samples that dry well under pressure and dry air. Since moisture is completely removed from the fibers, you can completely avoid frame shrinkage. As a result, we have good performance characteristics and a fairly budget-friendly option for a garage box. However, the profiled timber will crack over time and cracks will begin to appear.

That is why garage log houses made of profiled timber require external finishing. Pay attention to the type of gate - it is best to use swing options, which are easily attached to the timber and have the ability to adjust the height after installation.

Solid timber garage

This is the most affordable material for construction, which is installed without drying with the natural moisture of the timber. Since after knocking together a log house for a garage, it will shrink greatly over time, it is necessary to lay inter-crown insulation between the logs and constantly monitor any cracks that appear. To begin finishing work inside and outside, you will have to wait 1-2 years, depending on the climate.

Before purchasing a solid mini timber for a garage with natural humidity, be sure to check the following:

  • The material must have a minimum number of knots;
  • There should be no damage to the trunk due to rot;
  • There is no deformation or warping of the barrel.

Selecting a project and photo of a sketch of a timber garage

Before calculating the estimate and choosing tools, it is necessary to develop a project for a garage made of timber. You can find the project on the Internet - the most important thing is to determine for yourself the following construction parameters:

  • Garage box size (for 1 or several cars);
  • How will the entrance gate and the door to the utility be located? block/workshop;
  • Are you planning to place an inspection pit or build an attic floor?
  • Selecting the type of concrete base depending on the characteristics of the soil;
  • Choosing a floor structure (earth, wood, poured, concrete);
  • Will there be insulation of walls and roofs, installation of heating systems and appliances;
  • Type of roof and roofing materials to cover it.

Based on these points, you will find drawings and select your favorite photos of a timber garage. Based on this information, it will be possible to begin counting materials, tools and moving on to construction.

Construction of a timber garage foundation

The concrete base depends on the characteristics of the soil at the location of the garage box, as well as its size and the selected timber. According to experts, the top edge of the concrete base should be 10-15 cm above the ground surface. This will avoid saturation of the lower crown of the building with moisture.

Having decided on the soil, you choose from 3 types of foundation the most suitable for your case: slab, strip or columnar foundation. Most often, a “slab” is made under the timber. To build it you need:

  • Remove the fertile layer of soil and dig a pit to a depth of 30-40 cm along the entire perimeter of the future building;
  • Fill in a 10 cm layer of gravel and sand. Additionally compact it manually or using a vibrating plate;
  • A formwork is formed from boards 20-30 cm high. The inside of the formwork is lined with polyethylene or any other waterproofing material;
  • Lay a mesh of reinforcing rods with a diameter of 10-12 mm. In the corners, use wire to secure bent steel elements;
  • The reinforcing mesh is laid in 2 layers: the 1st layer is laid on bricks or special plastic holders, 10-12 mm high, and the 2nd layer is attached to reinforcing bars at a distance of 20-40 mm from the 1st mesh;
  • The entire structure is filled with concrete and leveled along the top of the formwork.

If you decide to build a garage out of timber with an inspection hole with your own hands, then you need to fence off the space indicated on the plan with formwork boards. After pouring the foundation, you need to wait 3-4 weeks for the concrete to gain strength and you can proceed to installing the floor.

Timber garage floor options

For slab concrete bases, 2 types of coating are relevant:

  • Making reinforced concrete screed directly on the slab;
  • Creating a frame from logs for laying a wooden floor.

Most often, for a suburban area, the option of a warm garage with a plank floor is chosen. To do this, initially prepare a grillage with a beam cross-section of 100 by 150 or 100 by 200. The lower piping is done so that all corners of the concrete base are eventually connected. Also, an additional pair of beams is laid inside parallel to the sides of the foundation. The connection of the concrete base with the lower crown is carried out using angles and anchor bolts.

The next stage is to lay a dense layer of waterproofing (the material can be roofing felt). All that remains is to lay the rough floor from the board on the roofing material. To fix and connect them together, you can use 2-3 nails at each intersection.

Important! Make sure that the board along the entire perimeter of the floor is not interrupted or spliced. The presence of additional elements at this stage of work should be avoided as much as possible.

After laying the subfloor, we lay 100x100 mm timber perpendicular to the fixed boards in 3-meter increments. Fixation to the boards is carried out using steel brackets. Mineral wool, a layer of expanded clay or sheets of polyurethane foam are laid between the bars.

Now, at the final stage, the finished floor is laid from planed boards 15x100 mm. The same material can be used to close the side gaps in the garage. This concludes the range of construction work for constructing a garage floor. Now your garage box will not be afraid of frost and rain.

Construction of a garage frame from timber

To begin, mark in detail on paper the connections of the nodes and the supporting vertical posts of the structure. Steel brackets are used to connect the frame elements, but use metal plates at the corners of the connection to the floor. The most important thing is to avoid cutting the beams in advance by replacing such a connection with an overlap joint.

Timber garage trim

The basis will be a frame for a garage made of timber 150x150 or 100x100 mm. Vertical posts are made from timber with a cross-section of 150 mm, and a horizontal support frame is made from 100 mm wood.

Important! Support posts should not be placed on the foundation, but on a layer of roofing material. This will prevent moisture from getting into the wood. The racks are fixed on the concrete slab with threaded anchor pins, which must first be buried to a depth of 20-25 cm into the base of the concrete.

After leveling the timber garage frame horizontally, you can begin attaching the diagonal inclined jibs. You will need to pull the cord over them and place ordinary vertical posts. The installation step of the racks largely depends on their cross-section. As a rule, for reliability and convenience of further fastening of the cladding, the step is taken in the range of 70-100 cm.

The frame must be secured along the top using a strapping beam. It will serve as a support for the formation of the rafter system of the garage roof. For fastening a set of rafter legs, grooves of the appropriate size must be cut in each of the strapping beams.

Construction of a garage roof

After erecting the frame and covering the walls, you need to move on to arranging the roof. It is necessary to lay a mauerlat on top of the crowns. To ensure the reliability and stability of the structure, the Mauerlat must be fixed with dowels and fastened with steel corners. The next step is to attach the rafters. All that remains is to secure them with braces and connect them together with a profiled ridge beam.

At the final stage, a sheathing of boards is installed on the rafter system, and then the previously selected roofing covering is laid. The roof needs to be insulated from the inside if you are planning to build a residential attic.

External finishing of a garage made of timber

After the main stages of constructing a timber garage have been completed, you can begin finishing work. On the inside of the walls, the surface of the timber is covered with clapboard. For exterior decoration, the most economical and aesthetically attractive option is siding. If you want to make a more reliable and expensive option, you can sheathe the walls of the block house.

Attention! In order to prevent moisture from getting through the joints between the vertical posts of the timber and preventing them from being blown through, you need to secure a vapor barrier made of a special membrane under the casing, which will protect the garage box from the wind.

A garage is one of those types of outbuildings that, at first glance, can be made of absolutely any materials. In fact, this is not entirely correct: if you decide to build it from wood, you can be sure that the walls of the building will be breathable and will be able to allow moisture vapor to pass through, thereby neutralizing possible unpleasant odors, but retaining heat. Let's find out how to build a garage from timber with your own hands.

Advantages of a timber garage

It turns out that making such a structure with your own hands is quite simple: the building materials available today are already completely ready for use, they are treated with special compounds that eliminate the danger of rotting or burning, and also do not require additional adjustment. Among the undoubted advantages of timber construction, we separately highlight the following:

  • The environmentally friendly building material of the walls makes it possible to create a favorable microclimate inside the room. This point becomes especially relevant if the garage space is also planned to be used as a home workshop (and this happens quite often);
  • optimal humidity level. Wooden walls ensure the maintenance of normal humidity in the room, preventing it from increasing, which means your car is better stored;
  • ease of construction. Wood is considered a material that can be easily processed; accordingly, with minimal construction skills, you can independently build a garage from timber with your own hands, without involving expensive outside specialists;
  • attractive appearance. Such a building will fit perfectly into the overall concept of your site.

The only controversial point that should be noted is the increased fire hazard of wooden buildings, which is why they should be regularly coated with special fire-retardant compounds.

Construction stages

Like any wooden building, a timber garage requires the construction of a foundation. You decide for yourself what it will be - slab, pile or strip - the main thing is that the wood does not come into contact with the soil surface, otherwise very soon your garage will begin to rot. Ideally, the foundation should rise above ground level by about 20 cm. In addition, a layer of waterproofing material must be laid between the top of the foundation and the lower bars of the garage walls.

As a rule, walls are formed from specially prepared timber, placing elements in a log house. You can make your task easier and order a complete log house, leaving behind only the assembly of the structure. In this case, the price increases quite a bit, and the scale of work is significantly reduced.

As for the floor, it can be made of either wood or concrete. If you choose the second option, then take this into account at the stage of laying the foundation: by choosing the option with slabs, you will simultaneously form the floor.

Roof options can be different: it can be single-pitch or gable. The way you organize the rafters will depend on which roof option you choose. You should only think about organizing additional insulation if you plan to heat your future garage.

Construction technology

First of all, it is necessary to build a foundation. With the slab option, everything is more or less clear; let’s look at the option of a columnar foundation. First you need to decide on the size of the building site, clear it of the top fertile layer of soil and carefully level it. Next, we make the markings using pegs and twine.

The columnar foundation must be installed in all corners and along the perimeter of the future garage, and the distance between the columns cannot exceed 2 m. They are erected from brick or concrete blocks on cement mortar, not forgetting to first form a special sand cushion. When the cement has completely hardened, a layer of waterproofing is laid on top and everything is covered with a layer of roofing felt. Now it’s time to lay the embedded beam, into which the floor coverings, made of a bar with a diameter of 4 cm, are embedded.

The distance between the mortgages directly depends on the planned load on the floor in the future: when building a garage, it is better to lay the joists more densely, at a distance of no more than 1 m from each other. All subsequent rows of timber are laid on top of each other, connecting them to each other using dowels. When the construction of the walls is completed, it is necessary to cut the rafter frame into the upper crown, forming it depending on the chosen roof shape. As soon as the roof is installed, it is better to immediately cover it with a roofing covering, using any material you like - roofing felt, corrugated sheets, slate, ondulin or tiles.

Pay special attention to the so-called “skates” - they need enhanced waterproofing. Now you can start interior work. If you choose the option of a garage on a columnar foundation, you need to lay the floor. It is made from tongue-and-groove boards, secured to the mortgages with self-tapping screws. The floor, like the internal walls of a wooden garage, must be treated with a fire retardant in order to protect itself from an accidental fire.

Now we will form a gentle entrance to the garage: it is made of boards (60 mm) laid on a support beam, which is attached to the lower mortgage. It is important to maintain the correct angle of inclination of the entrance - it should not exceed 30 degrees. That's all, all that remains is to install the gate. It is noteworthy that a garage made of timber is a fairly strong structure that can easily withstand the installation of both swing and automatic lifting gates.

Video “Construction of a garage from timber”

From this video you will learn how to properly build a garage from timber with your own hands.

Now on the market there is a huge amount of building materials for the construction of garage boxes. However, one of the most environmentally friendly options is a wooden structure. Thanks to its high thermal insulation characteristics, it is possible to effectively retain heat, and the fibrous structure of the wood allows the garage to maintain air ventilation. At the same time, building a garage from timber with your own hands takes the same amount of time as installing a frame garage.

Profiled timber is considered the most effective and convenient material to work with. Due to the delayed operation of modern production lines, the finished material does not require drying and additional adjustment to size. Especially for construction, the timber is pre-impregnated with fire and a bioprotective solution, which virtually eliminates the possibility of fire and rotting of the material.

Are we building a garage with our own hands from timber? Then let's look at the whole process step by step!

Choosing materials for a garage made of timber with your own hands

First you need to decide on the criteria for selecting timber. There are 2 options here - either we choose a solid one or a glued one. The advantages of laminated veneer lumber are that it does not warp at all and is practically protected from cracking. Another plus is the tongue-and-groove system, which allows you not to use an additional layer of insulation during construction. There is one minus - in most cases it is one of the most expensive environmentally friendly materials. That is why a do-it-yourself timber garage is mainly built from ordinary profiled wood.

Profiled timber is considered one of the budget options (along with frame and panel technology). If the timber is well dried, the frame will have virtually no shrinkage. At the same time, assembly from profiled material takes the same amount of time as for glued structures.

The most affordable of the proposed options would be solid timber with natural humidity. However, such construction of a garage with your own hands from timber will be accompanied by the installation of inter-crown insulation, since the timber is uneven and cracks will appear during the construction process. Also, with further shrinkage of the structure during the first 2-3 years, it will be necessary to periodically caulk the seams in places where new cracks have appeared.

It is important! If you have the financial means, then ideally you should order a ready-made timber frame, which has already settled and does not shrink further. Moreover, you will not need to cut out the joints yourself - you will receive a design from the contractors to the specified dimensions.

The preparatory stage before the construction of the foundation and structure

Plan and diagram of a garage made of timber

Before you directly start building a garage from timber with your own hands, you need to assemble the tools, choose a convenient site for the foundation and understand the features of the chosen project. Let's talk briefly about each of the points.

Choosing a tool for the job

In addition to purchasing the selected type of timber with a cross-section of at least 100 by 150 mm, you will also need a set of construction tools. Throughout the installation process you will need:

  • A small circular or reciprocating saw with a set of replacement chains,
  • Several mallets, birch dowels and inter-crown insulation,
  • A set of metal corners for attaching the roof and sheathing to the foundation,
  • Power tools: drill, hacksaw, plane,
  • Tools at hand: hammer, chisel and pistol with a set of staples, shovel.

Preparing the site for the foundation of a future building

The choice of size and configuration of a concrete foundation depends on the characteristics of the soil on your site, the overall dimensions of the selected type of construction and the availability of materials (from a cost point of view). Having decided on the type of foundation for the project, you need to dig and level the area along the axial dimensions to a depth of 50-70 cm. It is best to level with sand, organizing a sand cushion 20-30 cm thick.

It is important! When preparing the site, be sure to take into account the depth of soil freezing in your area. Also note that the upper edges of the future foundation should “stick out” above ground level to a height of at least 10 cm. This way you will protect the wood in the lower crowns from contact with the ground.

Development of the project and drawings

Even before preparing the site for construction, you must have a clear idea of what the garage will look like. The garage project will allow you to develop a design concept and calculate an estimate for the necessary materials. Before building a garage from 100x100 mm timber with your own hands, the drawings and plans should ultimately contain information on the following parameters:

  • dimensions of the garage along the axes (indicating the allotted distance for the car, storage space, workshop, etc.);
  • entrance gates, entrance doors and their exact location are indicated;
  • the presence or absence of a cellar (inspection pit, second floor, etc.);
  • type of foundation selected (slab, strip or columnar configuration);
  • type of flooring (earthen, concrete or wooden type of flooring);
  • the presence of heating systems (are you going to equip a cold and warm version of the garage);
  • the final shape of the roof (single or double slope), as well as the type of roofing materials.

Only after clarification of all these points can you proceed to building a garage from timber with your own hands. With the help of drawings, plans and sections, it will be easier for you to mark and assemble the structure. At the same time, the estimate for materials will allow you to stay within your budget without spending extra money or purchasing unnecessary materials.

Building a foundation with your own hands for a garage made of timber

Depending on the type of foundation chosen, the list of works will change. Most often, either a slab base is poured or a columnar foundation is used.

In the case of a slab, the most important thing is to correctly assemble the frame from the reinforcement and check the concrete mixture - it must meet the characteristics specified when ordering. Pouring, as a rule, is carried out in one go - the concrete mixture is smoothly distributed along the entire contour of the formwork. The most important thing is to compact the concrete as much as possible to remove air, which will later lead to the appearance of pores.

When choosing a columnar foundation, it is necessary, in accordance with the markings of the pile field, to dig holes and pour the reinforced structure into several layers of concrete. The most important thing is to align the heads of the resulting concrete pillars and maintain the “vertical” when concreting the metal frame.

You can read the nuances and features of constructing one or another type of foundation for garage buildings in the relevant sections on the website. In this material, we will consider in detail the stages of independently erecting sheathing and installing a roof on a garage made of timber.

Installation of a timber frame for a garage

To create a durable structure, you must first prepare the foundation base. We lay any of the rolled waterproofing materials, including roofing felt, in two layers on the concrete base. Next, a 20 mm longitudinal board, well impregnated with bitumen solution, is laid along the entire perimeter. This will serve as protection for the lower crown from moisture evaporating from the surface of the concrete.

Don't know how to make a timber garage frame stable? Check the harness. It is the installation of the strapping that will influence the load-bearing characteristics of the building. Here, special attention should be paid to the connection between the wooden elements - in the corners it is better to use the “claw” connection principle, reinforcing the knot with metal corners.

It is important to know! If you plan to lay wooden floors in the garage in the future, then it is necessary to install the joists at this stage. Simply cut them directly into the harness, ensuring a connection pitch of 80-100 mm. This will ensure the strength of the floor structure without loss of load-bearing capacity.

After tying, we install the garage crowns. When assembling yourself, it is best to first perform a “rough” assembly of the crowns. This will allow you to measure and adjust all the links of the log house in length, making identical cuts on all sides. Also, do not forget to drill small holes for fastening the dowels (steps no more than 100 mm). When finally assembling the crowns, be sure to lay insulation - tapes made of jute or flax fibers are most often used here.

Installing a roof on a timber garage with your own hands

To install a roofing system on a finished timber frame, you will need a partner. First, mark the places where the rafters will be attached. Then install rafters every 2-3 meters and attach them to the top crown of the garage. How to make a garage from timber together with a house? Just build a common lean-to structure, which is attached to the house on one side and to the edge of the garage on the other.

Video of building a garage from timber

To build a garage from timber with your own hands, photos of materials and descriptions of the general technology are sometimes not enough. Video publications come to the rescue. This video shows the main aspects of arranging the foundation, erecting sheathing and installing the roof. Enjoy watching!

Wooden beams do not lose their natural attractiveness. Despite the existence of more durable and cheaper materials, timber also has distinctive advantages. We will describe how to build a garage from timber with your own hands in this article.

Foundation structure

The construction of a garage made of timber must begin with the construction of the foundation. The easiest and most reliable way to make the foundation for a structure is from a reinforced concrete monolithic slab. It will not only securely support the walls, but will also become a solid floor. To eliminate the influence of soil moisture on the concrete, it is necessary to lay waterproofing made of roofing felt in 2 layers on an arranged and compacted sand cushion. For a garage that will be heated, it is advisable to insulate the foundation slab. Before making a screed on a concrete base, you first need to lay extruded foam sheets up to 20 mm thick on it.

The foundation slab must be of such a size that the thickness of the base allows the finished floor to rise above the ground up to 250 mm. This will protect the walls from getting wet during heavy rainfall.

Note! To better protect the walls from moisture, it is advisable to build a concrete blind area about 0.8 m wide along the entire contour of the building.

Construction of the frame

As with other construction work, before erecting a timber frame, you must first develop a project that will allow the wooden garage to have an impeccable geometric shape, be reliable and durable. All structures with load-bearing capacity and connection nodes are drawn on a sheet of Whatman paper.

If you do not have the qualifications and experience to develop nodal connections yourself, you can use ready-made standard projects, where all the structural dimensions of the parts connecting the vertical posts with other elements that connect the frame into a single whole are drawn and marked in detail. Frame fragments can be connected using metal plates of various shapes with holes made for nails or screws, or with staples made of metal.

Note! Joints that require complex cutting, cutting and notching should be avoided, replacing them with overlapping joints, which will make the work easier.

The basis for a frame wooden garage is a frame made of timber 10x10 cm in cross-section, which is located in a horizontal position. To make the structure more resistant to moisture, the most suitable types of wood for the support frame are larch or oak.

Note! To prevent moisture from getting into the wood fibers, roofing felt is laid between the support frame and the concrete as an insulating element.

  • Having installed the frame in a horizontal position using a level, install frame racks at the corners.
  • Having made sure that the racks are vertical, it’s time to fasten them with inclined plank jibs.
  • Then auxiliary racks are installed along the stretched grit. The step between them is taken from 500 to 1000 mm.
  • Having secured the frame posts along the grate with permanent jibs, a timber frame is made on top, which serves as a support for the roof rafter system.
  • To ensure that the legs of the rafters are securely fastened, grooves are cut out in the strapping beam.

You need to decide in advance whether the garage will be heated. If so, you need to think carefully about how to ensure that the constructed garage is insulated. Wall covering is carried out in parallel with filling the empty grooves with ecowool. You can do it another way: first, cover the structure with boards or clapboards, and then insulate the walls from the middle with medium-hard mineral wool.

Cover the insulation with a film that will protect the garage from the formation of steam during heating. For this purpose, you need to make a ventilated hole. It is impossible to insulate walls with polystyrene foam, since when they come into contact with water vapor, the wood will rot.

Construction of gates and roofs

Garage doors can be equipped with a wooden frame at the base, lined with a steel sheet profile. You can use a board or clapboard for this purpose. To protect the garage at a higher level, the gate can be reinforced with steel roller blinds. An even better option is to install gates made of sections with an automatic drive. To achieve visual harmony between the timber and the gate, you can choose a suitable paint coating.

Depending on the choice of the car owner, the roof for the garage can be chosen to suit every taste - from single-pitch and gable to attic and hip. To organize a compartment for storage space with equipment, it is better to build a hipped gable roof. It will cost more than a lean-to, but the room will be more spacious and warmer.
