Pests of garden plants

A stool is an indispensable piece of furniture. With its help, you can get the necessary things from a high shelf, pick a harvest in the country, or just sit comfortably in the shade of a tree. You need several stools. To avoid spending money on buying them, you can try to make them yourself. It is not difficult and not financially expensive. How to make a stool, what is necessary for manufacturing, you will learn from the article.

Popular types of stools

The store offers a huge number of chairs, stools and a variety of furniture. But a stool made by yourself will always be better, more convenient and more expensive. This is a source of pride, the result of mastery and the level of skill achieved. If you involve your child in making the stool, it will be an unforgettable experience and wonderful childhood memories. Or maybe this will be the impetus for the development of children's creativity. So the decision to make a chair without a backrest with your own hands has only positive aspects. How to make a stool with your own hands can be found in the article.

The process should be approached responsibly. You need to prepare:

  • material for making a chair;
  • place of work;
  • sketch or drawing;
  • components.

A popular household item requires knowledge of some nuances during manufacture:

  • making grooves for connecting the legs is an important condition;
  • the most reliable type of fastening is a groove - tenon;
  • Incorrect cutting of grooves will lead to loosening of parts;
  • The stool is moved frequently, so the use of good fastening units is important.

Stool options:

  • in the form of a chair, without a back;
  • small, about thirty centimeters in height, often used as a stand;
  • with soft upholstery is widely used in the kitchen;
  • children's - option for a small child;
  • folding, for fishing, trading at the market.

Children's stools photos can be seen in the article. This type of chair is very popular in families with children.

Various do-it-yourself stool drawings

It is best for a beginner to make a stool according to the instructions in order to avoid inconsistencies. A stool is made with your own hands, following the rules and instructions.

The first rule is to prepare the legs for the chair. The sequence rule is:

  • cut off four pieces, six hundred millimeters each, from the timber prepared in advance;
  • make bevels at forty-five degrees;
  • For a correctly sawed corner, it is extremely important to use a miter box; this device allows you to make cuts at any desired angle;
  • the manufactured legs are connected in pairs;
  • make a notch - a gap on the pair of cutting legs;
  • by connecting the blanks, you get a cross from the legs;
  • prepare a beam of six hundred millimeters for attaching the crosspiece to each other, this is done for the stability of the product;
  • connect the fastening points with self-tapping screws;
  • “sink” the grooves for aesthetic beauty, seal the top with a special agent;
  • connect the cross and at the top.

After making the legs, you should proceed to work on making the seat. If this is not a stool for getting things from the mezzanine, for convenience it is better to make a soft seat. Making a soft top is not at all difficult.

To make a quality top, you need to use plywood. There are no exact recommendations, but it is advisable to use plywood thicker than fifteen millimeters. If you use thinner plywood, the seat will be flimsy.

The seat manufacturing algorithm is as follows:

  • cut out a piece of plywood with a jigsaw or saw; you should draw the sketch correctly in advance;
  • cut a piece of foam rubber to fit the seat;
  • cut off the material - the lining, the material should be about a third larger than the seat, the margin is necessary for conveniently securing the material under the top of the chair;
  • the material is laid out in the following order: fabric, foam rubber, plywood;
  • tuck the corners of the material along the edges;
  • The upholstery material is attached with staples or buttons with plastic caps; an assistant is needed to properly stretch and hold the material.

Step-by-step instructions for making a stool

A stool is a necessary piece of furniture; it can be of any size and from any number of parts. In essence, it is a chair that has no back. He will never be superfluous in the household. Any craftsman who can hold a hacksaw and a hammer in his hands can make a stool, even if he has never made anything more complicated than a box before. Following simple instructions will allow you to build a comfortable stool for your cottage or apartment.

If you have solid pieces of natural wood, you can make a chic stool that will be expensive, but will look impressive. But more often, only assorted fragments of boards are at hand. Even in this case, you can make a stool that will decorate the interior and perform its main function.

In order for the result of your work to please you, you need to visit the construction market and purchase the following materials:

  • several high-quality sanded pine or oak boards;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • timber for lintels;
  • special glue;
  • corners for fastening.

Having purchased the material, you imagine what kind of stool you would like to have at the end. You should estimate all sizes in advance. The main dimensions of the future seating area are marked on the board, and a decision is made on the height and thickness of the legs. Provided that the stool is not being made for children, it is advisable to provide additional fastenings between the seat and the side stand. The drawbars will make the stool more durable and prevent loosening. A small hacksaw is necessary for cutting the material, this will help avoid chipped areas. It is necessary to make some kind of protrusions at the top of the racks; these parts will fit into the bottom of the seat. Accordingly, grooves for them are prepared on the seat.

After cutting the materials (which you carefully double-check before cutting), you can begin assembling the main parts of the future stool. For good fixation, before connecting the grooves of the seat and the posts, the protrusions should be treated with special glue and sealed with a bandage to ensure the strength of the connection. Parts of the chair are attached to the drawers with self-tapping screws. If the material is of different colors, the surface of the stool should be thoroughly sanded. Provided that high-quality material was purchased, putty will only be necessary for the places where the self-tapping screws enter.

The first product may not satisfy you. Each subsequent product will turn out better and more original. The stool will become a source of your pride, a highlight of the interior and will help you save a lot of money.

It must be remembered that it is better to make the stool low, no higher than sixty centimeters.

Modern stools

The ability to produce an original and stylish sample allows you to expand the scope of stools. Gone are the days of them being only in the kitchen or being used for picking apples. In addition to traditional square designs, more and more variants of original shapes are appearing:

  • oval;
  • round;
  • bar;
  • children's;
  • other.

They can be made from a variety of materials:

  • various wood;
  • plastic;
  • metal;
  • acrylic.

Such original and stylish stools will decorate any home, as well as public places: cafes, bars, restaurants, pizzerias. But still, wooden stools are preferable for home furnishings.

Do-it-yourself folding stool

A folding stool is very convenient and practical; when there is no need to use a stool, it can be folded and placed behind some furniture. Thus, it takes up no space at all and is invisible.

Fishermen, summer residents, and market sellers were able to appreciate the convenience of such a stool. You can buy a stool and not waste effort on making it. But if you do it yourself, you will be completely confident in its quality and will receive moral satisfaction from using the result of your labor.

Making a folding stool is simple, but you still can’t do it without a detailed drawing. Necessary for making a high chair:

  • identical bars, four pieces;
  • leggings;
  • crossbars under the seat;
  • bars for sitting;
  • six bolts;
  • self-tapping screws

After preparing the workplace, drawing, materials and all tools, you can begin making the chair:

  • place axial bolts; they should be fastened along the edges of the legs;
  • drill holes, taking into account the place for the cap;
  • attach the crossbars to the top of the legs, two on the inside, two on the outside;
  • the legs are installed at a distance of nine to ten centimeters from the legs;
  • connect the middle bars, this process is quite laborious and requires a lot of concentration, this is a collapsible mechanism, it is important to secure the parts correctly;
  • The height of the chair depends on the location of the connecting bars.

Any type of wood is suitable for making a folding chair, pine and birch are preferable. The light weight will make the chair easier to carry.

Tools for work

To make a stool you will need to prepare a workplace and tools. Unless you are a professional carpenter, there is no need to spend your salary on expensive machines and tools. You can get by with simple tools that any man has in his pantry. The floor surface must be covered with film, this will help reduce littering. To make a stool you will need:

  • electric drill;
  • carpenter's clamp;
  • clamp - clothespin;
  • jigsaw;
  • saw;
  • drill and set of drills;
  • hacksaw for metal;
  • wood file (rasp);
  • bit;
  • screwdriver;
  • chisel;
  • sandpaper;
  • wooden mallet;
  • fasteners;
  • plane;

But before manufacturing the product, it is necessary to make a sketch - a sketch. To do this you will need:

  • metal ruler and square;
  • brushes;
  • set of pencils.

Material, samples

To make a high chair, you can use any type of wood. Of all the materials suitable for making a stool, it is preferable to create a product from wood. Neither wrought iron nor plastic seating can compare to a wooden chair. The only caveat is that wood from poplar, alder, willow and aspen is least suitable for a chair. These breeds are soft and prone to reacting to contact with water.

It is important that the material for the blanks is dry, of high quality, without knots, mold or wormholes. If the wood is wet, the finished product will dry out and be of poor quality; it may dry out and crack.

Pine and spruce are used for seating. To make legs, harder trees are required: beech, birch, oak, fir, maple.

If it is impossible to make a product from wood, modified wood can be used. This is compressed sawdust and waste from cutting trees. This material is inferior in wear and durability to natural material.

The choice of glue also needs to be approached responsibly. Most pieces of furniture are glued together and the quality of the glue will directly determine the quality of the product. Bone wood glue has good reviews. It is relatively inexpensive, does not require additional drying, and holds the parts firmly after hardening. The only drawback is the difficulty of manufacturing and the need for special equipment.

Liquid nails glue is strong enough for gluing parts together. It hides seams well.

Water-based acrylic glue is also very strong and high quality.

Due to their high cost, liquid nails and acrylic glue are being replaced by PVA for furniture. PVA glue for paper is not suitable for gluing parts. The downside of this glue is the need to keep the glued parts for 24 hours without loading or displacing the parts.

What do you need to know?

In order to make it, you should master several types of connecting wooden parts to each other:

  • insert into half a tree (be able to make a groove);
  • tongue-and-groove connection;
  • dowel connection;
  • rallying;
  • tongue and groove connection.

There is nothing complicated in making a stool from wood. You need to be patient, measure everything, make the right sketches and select the material. But after spending a little time, you will enjoy a convenient and high-quality product for a long time, feel moral satisfaction and proudly show off your creation to your friends. Or maybe the first experience will be an impetus for further carpentry.

Furniture stores offer a wide selection of chairs in different stylistic styles. It is also possible to order such an item from a professional craftsman. He will fulfill the order, taking into account the slightest requirements. During production, the master will use any materials (components) chosen by the client. Such pleasure is not cheap. If the services of a craftsman are too expensive, it is better to make a comfortable chair from plywood yourself at a minimal cost. Such furniture will become an original decoration of the room. It is much more valuable than store-bought analogues.

  • Saving money. To make a chair from plywood, minimal costs will be required. You will only need to pay for the raw materials.
  • Gaining invaluable experience. Template furniture has long gone out of fashion. Today, products of original design are valued. Not everyone can make them themselves. After a good practice in making chairs, it is easy to learn a more complex craft.
  • Ease of operation. For many, making chairs yourself seems like something complicated and burdensome. In fact, the work will not take even a few hours, and the process itself does not require any expensive tools and materials. The main rule is to strictly follow the instructions. This article makes very clear recommendations. They will help you get the job done quickly.
  • An opportunity to surprise your family. Handmade chairs will be an excellent gift option for any occasion. A gift like this is doubly nice.

After painting, the product is also varnished.

It will be ideal if you use fabric identical to the fabric of the furniture located in the room to decorate the chair.

Preparatory work: we determine the type and size of the structure

Making chairs from plywood needs to be done carefully so as not to spoil the materials. The first stage is preparation. Here you need to decide on key aspects: size, height, type of structure.

Making furniture with your own hands is an exciting activity that has many undeniable advantages.

A product coated with varnish will already look much more attractive.

First you need to decide: why do you need a chair? You may need it in the garage, children's room, or in the country house. For household needs, the chair can have a simple design. For living rooms, it is better to choose original product drawings. A children's chair should be soft, safe, and reliable.

To make a chair from plywood, minimal costs will be required. You will only need to pay for the raw materials.

Today, much more attention is paid to the interior of the room and the appearance of its contents than twenty years ago.

Having decided on the purpose, it is worth choosing a style direction. The style of the chair should be intertwined with the style of the room. If the room is decorated in a classic direction, then folding plywood chairs should be truly graceful. They need to be painted and then varnished. For a country style, a product without any special decoration is suitable, while a Provence room needs a chair decorated with fabrics.

The main rule is to strictly follow the instructions.

To do this, we cut out the foam rubber in the shape of a seat, cover it with fabric, and fix it to the seat with a stapler.

Next, we determine the complexity of manufacturing. It all depends on your initial skills. It is better for beginners to take on simple designs only. Working on them will help you gain invaluable experience that will definitely come in handy in the future. If you have experience, feel free to experiment with complex shapes!

Handmade chairs will be an excellent gift option for any occasion.

The stool is held open with wooden spikes.

A soft seat will highlight the interior of the room and make the process of using the chair more comfortable.

The most important aspect is the size of the product. Creating diagrams and drawings is not a task for beginners. Experts recommend that people without experience use standard sizes. The height of the chair can always be adjusted. The correspondence between a person’s height and the required height of the product is presented in the table.

The seat can be hard, especially if the chair is needed for household purposes.

Preparing materials

The following materials and tools will help you make a chair with your own hands:

  • sheet of plywood (2 cm thick, dimensions – 600x900 mm);
  • foam rubber (70 mm thick);
  • furniture fabric;
  • sheet of cardboard (dimensions 600x900);
  • pencil;
  • ruler;
  • Sander;
  • construction stapler;
  • PVA glue;
  • electric jigsaw;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • conductor for furniture assembly;
  • hammer;
  • bolts with sleeves.

Having decided on the purpose, it is worth choosing a style direction.

An assembly jig is not a home tool

  1. Plywood is inexpensive. It will last longer if it is made of birch. Birch wood is durable, easy to process, and easily tolerates painting and various finishes. You cannot use sheets of plywood that are too thin. Be sure to stick to the specified thickness. A thin sheet will not support the weight of a person, it will break, and can even lead to injury.
  2. An assembly jig is not a home tool. It can only be found from a person who has long been engaged in the independent production of furniture structures. If you don’t have such a tool, it’s better to purchase one. He will help you assemble the chair structure as professionally as possible.
  3. It is not necessary to use foam rubber with furniture fabric to create a comfortable seat. The seat can be hard, especially if the chair is needed for household needs.

If the room is decorated in a classic direction, then folding plywood chairs should be truly graceful.

Step-by-step instruction

Step 1 – creating templates. To do this, prepare cardboard, a ruler, and a pencil. We first transfer the drawing of the chair onto cardboard, cut out all the details, and then transfer them to the plywood itself.

Step 2 – cutting out the parts. To make a chair with your own hands, you need to prepare all its components. They can be cut from plywood using an electric jigsaw. The parts are cut out clearly along the marked lines.

Step 3 – sanding the parts. The chair should come out neat, so all parts need to be carefully sanded and trimmed. If a special grinding machine is not available, then you can use regular sandpaper.

Step 4 – creating holes for the hinges. The location of the holes must be consistent with the drawing. It is better to use bolts with sleeves as hinges. To increase the fixation strength of the sleeves, they should be secured in the holes with glue.

Step 5 – forming the holes for the tenons. The folding chair is held open using wooden spikes. For them, holes should be made with a Forstner drill.

Step 6 – assembly of the structure. Now we assemble the chair according to the drawing. Then make a seat. To do this, we cut out the foam rubber in the shape of a seat, cover it with fabric, and fix it to the seat with a stapler.

The height of the chair can always be adjusted.

If you have experience, feel free to experiment with complex shapes!

Decoration

Today, much more attention is paid to the interior of a room and the appearance of its contents than twenty years ago. This is not surprising, because original design solutions have come into fashion. A simple chair made of ordinary plywood is definitely not the ultimate dream. It can (should!) be improved with a little decor.

You can use varnish to decorate the chair. A product coated with varnish will already look much more attractive. If you want to add color, you will need a good wood paint. You can choose any color: red, blue, white, brown. It is better to select colors based on the color scheme of the room’s interior. After painting, the product is also varnished.

Applying ornaments is another interesting way to decorate furniture. To do this, you need to use a thin brush and paints of different colors. You can look at drawing ideas from photos on the Internet, or come up with your own. It is better to use waterproof paints.

Fabric can also become a decoration for the product. A soft seat will highlight the interior of the room and make the process of using the chair more comfortable. It will be ideal if you use fabric identical to the fabric of the furniture located in the room to decorate the chair.

It is better for beginners to take on simple designs only.

The most important aspect is the size of the product.

Currently, there is a large assortment of different furniture on sale, however, this does not stop home craftsmen who make it themselves. The fact is that this process is very exciting, and in this way you can save the family budget. For those who also decided to try their hand at this, next we will look at how to make a chair out of plywood with your own hands.

General information

Making plywood furniture is not as difficult as many might think. Of course, certain skills in working with the tool are needed, but they can be acquired in the process. The only thing is to start with simple designs, so the chair is an excellent option for a beginner.

It must be said that a beautiful plywood chair, made independently, will perform not only a practical function, but also a decorative one. And if you also make a table in the same style, you will get a set of furniture that can decorate the interior of a country house or even an apartment.

Another argument in favor of making plywood furniture yourself is that this work does not require a workshop with a large number of woodworking machines. You can get by with household tools such as a jigsaw and an electric drill. In addition, it is advisable to have a router and a grinder.

Even if you have to buy these tools, they will quickly pay for themselves, since the price of good furniture is very high these days.

Advice! To give plywood products a more attractive look, they can be decorated with saw-cut carvings made with a hand jigsaw.

Features of making a chair

Project

Before you start work, you need to prepare drawings of a plywood chair with your own hands. True, first it is advisable to decide on such design aspects as:

  • purpose of the chair– it can be a kitchen chair, a children’s chair, or, for example, a folding chair;
  • design style – selected depending on the interior style of the room in which the furniture will be used;
  • complexity of production– selected based on your skill level. As mentioned above, it is better for beginners to first make simple plywood chair designs with their own hands to gain experience;
  • product sizes - in most cases you can use standard sizes, however, if the product is made for a specific person, for example, a child, the sizes depend on his age.

Having decided on all the design features, you can draw up drawings. It must be said that it is not necessary to do this work yourself. There are a lot of ready-made projects on the Internet. You can find some of them on our portal.

If desired, you can adjust the finished drawings at your discretion and change their sizes so that the product best meets your requirements.

As an example, let's look at how to make a folding chair according to the proposed project, which will be useful to every summer resident or fisherman. This design is quite simple, the only thing is that before you start manufacturing, you should make drawings of a folding chair from plywood with your own hands on a one-to-one scale on graph paper.

The material for the product will need a sheet of moisture-resistant plywood 2 cm thick. Its length and width must be at least 600x900 mm.

Manufacturing procedure

So, the instructions for making a folding plywood chair are as follows:

  • first of all, you need to fix the prepared drawings of a folding plywood chair with your own hands on a sheet of cardboard and cut out the part templates with scissors;
  • then the templates need to be attached to a sheet of plywood and outlined with a pencil;
  • Next, you need to use a jigsaw to cut out the parts along the marked lines. To cut parts of the structure inside a plywood sheet, you must first drill a hole;
  • The sawn parts need to be sanded. If necessary, the cut lines should be trimmed;
  • then, according to the drawing, you need to make holes for the hinges. As the latter, you can use bolts with sleeves. To firmly fix the sleeves in the blind holes of the parts, they can be glued with epoxy glue.

  • after this, in part No. 3 you need to cut holes for the fangs using a Forster drill;
  • Now all structural elements need to be laid on a flat surface and assembled.

Now that the folding chair is ready, it needs to be varnished. To give the ends an attractive look, veneer can be glued to them.

The modern furniture market offers a huge range of products for offices and homes. However, some home craftsmen prefer to make them themselves, at least such simple structures as cabinets, shelves, tables and chairs. And today we will talk about how to make with your own hands a rather simple and, at the same time, very necessary element of any kitchen furniture - a plywood stool.

The classic version of the stool is a product consisting of several elements:

  • seat-base of round or square design;
  • legs;
  • connecting elements.

Types of chairs-stools

Classic stool model for the kitchen

It consists of four legs, possibly carved, and a seat, which can be either solid, made of the same material as the chair legs, or more comfortable with a layer of foam rubber. The chairs are decorated with beautiful upholstery fabric, and for easy care they use removable covers, which, if necessary, can be removed for washing or for complete replacement.

Bar stool

Many modern interior designs include a small bar counter, which, of course, will require high chairs. Their main difference from classic stools is the height of the legs. You can also make your own bar stool from bent plywood.

Wicker stool

If you are a fan of wicker furniture and have already installed chairs and a table made of wicker on the veranda of your country house, it would be appropriate to place a small stool with a wicker seat next to it, which will not only fit harmoniously into this classic style, but will also serve as a very practical furniture element.

Stool-chair for children's room

This is, perhaps, one of those products that you need to start making first. After all, what could be better in our lives than children. Almost every child would like to have in their room something very similar to what adults use, but also to be comfortable and convenient. A stool made with love, tenderness and care, in accordance with the growth of the child and his needs, will become one of the best items in a child's room.

Advantages of making furniture yourself:

  • saving money;
  • the ability to produce a structure of a suitable size for you with an interesting design.

What should you pay attention to when choosing a future stool model?

  1. Form. It must match the design of the table. For example, round chairs will not fit well with a square or rectangular table.
  2. Upholstery type. Since the plywood stool will undergo intensive use, it is better to choose materials that do not require special care. Choose washable options such as eco-leather or short pile fabrics.
  3. Chair dimensions. For ease of use and storage of stools, their height and seat dimensions should allow placement under the table.

Requirements for a modern stool

Firstly, it must be strong enough and safe. This can be achieved if, when manufacturing furniture, you strictly adhere to all technological standards and use only high-quality materials and components. Then the finished stool will not wobble and will be able to serve you for many years.

Secondly, it must be functional. Its proportions and sizes should be suitable for all family members. For example, the height of a chair should be selected in such a way that the feet of the person sitting on it touch the floor. For children, you need to provide a crossbar on which you can put your feet.

Thirdly, the stool should be convenient and comfortable. To do this, its seat should be made soft, which will allow you to have long conversations on the chair over a cup of tea.

Making a stool

Making a stool yourself is not at all difficult. Especially when you have a lot of photos and video examples in front of you. On the Internet, you can quickly and easily find ready-made drawings from which any novice craftsman can make blanks for a stool and assemble it.

Sketches of chairs and stools made of plywood

Materials and tools you will need:

  • birch plywood sheet 200 mm thick;
  • construction corner;
  • marker or pencil;
  • saw or electric jigsaw;
  • sandpaper or sanding machine;
  • screwdriver;
  • wood glue;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • metal furniture corners;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • foam;
  • furniture stapler;
  • brushes;
  • varnish for wooden surfaces.

Stages of work

The following models of stools can be made from a sheet of plywood: box-shaped, cabinet stools, and also with cross-shaped legs. We offer a standard version of a kitchen chair with an X-shaped base, a height of 45 centimeters, a seat size of 30x30 centimeters and a tongue-and-groove connection type. We consider these parameters to be the most optimal for standard tables. You can use other options.

After all the necessary drawings, tools and materials have been prepared, you can begin work:

  1. The selected drawings of the parts must be drawn on a sheet of thick paper, strictly measuring right angles and symmetry so that the finished product is smooth and stable, and all the parts fit neatly together during assembly.
  2. The resulting drawing is transferred onto a sheet of plywood using a contour. To maintain all proportions and dimensions, we recommend attaching the pattern to the plywood with pushpins.
  3. Using a jigsaw, the stool blanks are cut out. There are three of them - a seat and two identical parts that will serve as legs for the stool.

Use only a sharp blade when cutting plywood. Considering the fact that when cutting plywood material, chips remain at the cutting site along the top layer, you should cut only from the front side - then the chip will remain on the backside.

  1. Assembly of the structure:
  • glue the leg parts to each other using epoxy glue - they should fit very tightly to each other;
  • Place the lid on the resulting cross, having previously smeared the spikes with the same glue;
  • For reliability, reinforce the seat with metal corners.
  1. Sand the finished product thoroughly with a machine or sandpaper.
  2. Open the stool with varnish, except for the top base of the stool.
  3. After the varnish has completely dried, you can begin making the soft seat of the stool.

Sitting on a hard stool for a long time, to put it mildly, is not entirely comfortable. Therefore, you need to come up with some kind of soft base. The ideal option would be a piece of foam rubber or holofiber. We cut out a piece of foam rubber, the dimensions of which must fully correspond to the parameters of the seat. Glue it to the base of the chair.

You need to make a pattern from the upholstery fabric, the dimensions of which should exceed the length of the sides of the seat by 5 centimeters on each side. Using glue, the outer skin is attached to foam rubber, and the edges are tucked under the bottom of the seat and secured to it using a furniture stapler.

After you have made the first stool with your own hands, you can safely begin making the rest. Don’t delay, because several family members will want to sit on such a soft and comfortable chair at the same time.

When furnishing a kitchen, living room, office, veranda with chairs, armchairs, perhaps purchasing a sofa complete with an armchair, people often forget about such a simple helper as a stool. One or two stools in the household will often help where a full-fledged staircase is useless. Bringing a chair or armchair can be difficult and uncomfortable. They are indispensable where there is no room for a chair or armchair, and it is quite possible to make such furniture with your own hands.

Kinds

A simple stool consists of 4 legs screwed to the seat using a metal frame or “triangles”. A more “advanced” version is the use of several plywood sheets of arbitrary shape instead of legs, which are limited only by the designer’s imagination.

Step stool - a product with a small flight of stairs, in which horizontal steps form an ascending flight of stairs at an angle of 75-80 degrees. The latter is a “brother” of the bar stool: bar furniture uses a simple ladder that allows a visitor or waiter to sit on a seat near the bar counter.

Unlike a regular kitchen stool, whose height is 45-55 cm, a bar stool has a height of 70-100 cm. A “ladder stool” can be even higher – up to 120 cm.

The folding stool has hinged hinges. In such a transformer, you can fold both the seat (partially) and the supporting part - the legs or sheets of plywood stylized as them, having an elaborate shape. To prevent such a structure from collapsing and a person falling, the hinges are equipped with a locking element of the “lock” type. Both an ordinary kitchen and a “forest” (including a bar) stool can be folded.

The garden stool has flat and wide stands at the ends of the legs. They protect the sharp ends from sinking into loose soil. Otherwise, this subtype of bench differs little from an ordinary kitchen item - it can only be half the size of a kitchen one, for example, when a person performs small gardening work.

Wicker stool - a design solution for the kitchen-living room, verandas or even bedrooms. The supporting structure is braided with twigs from exotic tree-like plants.

But in the simplest case, a young grapevine can also be used, which only this year has finally become lignified.

What will you need?

From materials other than plywood, to make a stool you will need wood (or epoxy) glue, stainless (or brass) screws, and waterproof varnish.

The tools you will need are a jigsaw, an electric or hand drill, a router, a screwdriver (or a screwdriver with bits), a pencil, a tape measure, a sander (with a circular saw for wood), a square, a brush, a mallet (or a regular hammer), a shoemaker's knife, a plane, clamps.

Schemes and drawings

Any of dozens of sketches will be suitable as a diagram. These can be either the simplest U- and S-shaped structures with designer cutouts, or classic options with separate legs or edge-to-edge boards sawn into any profile. Particular attention is paid to figure eight stools (hourglass design), which may have no lower edge in contact with the floor. The stool can have a small back, be made in the form of a stylized regular polyhedron, an inverted truncated cone or pyramid, or a small barrel without some side walls (edges).

In general, the imagination of designers knows no bounds. But structures such as a cube or parallelepiped are more related to ottomans than to stools.

A diagram of sawing wood into its component parts can be drawn with a pencil on whatman paper. If you don’t have whatman paper, use an unfolded cardboard box from some device. For example, packaging from a TV or oil radiator, preserved from the time of purchase of this device, is suitable. To ensure that all the lines are clearly visible, use a marker or ballpoint pen of a color contrasting with the color scheme of your cardboard. Next, cut out your drawing using a mounting blade or a utility knife - these knives are as sharp as a razor blade. All details in a 1:1 ratio are then transferred to a sheet of plywood - you just need to lay out the sketches side by side, compactly, saving space on the plywood, and carefully trace them. This is one of the simplest ways to mark plywood. Experienced craftsmen draw out the details directly on the plywood.

How to make it yourself?

Once the details of your chosen design are outlined and the plywood is ready for cutting, you can begin this process. To speed up the cutting of plywood several times, you cannot do without a jigsaw. An example is the original “lattice” structure, which can be made collapsible without gluing or screwing its parts.

The disadvantage is that over time, your collapsible stool will loosen its technological grooves and ends, and you will still have to glue and screw it together, thereby turning it into a non-dismountable item.

The fact is that any wood wears out over time, and the grooves and cracks become somewhat larger - this reduces the stability of the structure.

Let's do the following.

  1. Using a hand saw and a jigsaw, we carefully and extremely accurately cut out all the parts. You need to apply more force (pressing, downwards) towards the “wrong” part, and not vice versa: solid boards and plywood often cause multiple chips as the saw (cutter) moves.
  2. If the plywood is of low quality and excessively rough, sand it using sandpaper (or use a sander with special brushes or sanding discs). In order not to fuss with each part separately, grab all the same ones - for example, elements of the seat covering, using clamps.
  3. Using a plane, cut a 3 mm chamfer from the outer edges (ribs) of the parts. The stool will not cut into your fingers when carried. And it will be more pleasant to sit on it.
  4. Place the load-bearing (vertical) elements perpendicular to the floor. Using a hammer or mallet, drive in the two lower horizontal bars that hold the supports of the assembled stool and prevent them from moving apart.
  5. Install all the top crossbars, keeping the same distances from the edges of the supporting structure.

If the structure still turns out to be shaky rather than tight, do the following.

  1. Sand all mating surfaces with coarse sandpaper.
  2. Drill holes for self-tapping screws in the parts. The diameter of the drill is selected slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw. For example, a “five” self-tapping screw requires a drill with a diameter of 3.5-4 mm.
  3. Dilute and apply epoxy glue to the parts where they touch.
  4. Secure the structure in all places by screwing in the screws.
  5. Check your structure for evenness and lack of distortion using a level, plumb line, laser or other high-precision means.

The stool is ready, you can put it away for a day in a safe place. Almost any glue requires 24 hours to fully cure and dry.
