Bamboo: the secrets of home care and cultivation. How to grow bamboo at home How to spin bamboo at home

Work in the country, in the garden in spring

Dracaena Sandera or "Bamboo of Happiness" is a perennial herb of the Dracaena genus. We will consider bamboo at home, its reproduction, planting and care and photos in this article. Young shoots of Sander's dracaena are similar to bamboo shoots, which is why such an analogy appeared.

The plant harmonizes the space, brings happiness and prosperity to the house. Due to its exotic appearance, the ability to bend young shoots picturesquely, and its unpretentiousness, it has become popular for growing at home and in the office.

Success secrets

Dracaena Sandera is an unpretentious plant native to Asia. Any room with a temperature regime of 17-28 ºС is suitable for its cultivation. Powerful shoots can reach a length of 1 m, so you need to choose a spacious, heavy pot for home bamboo.

Growing methods

This unique plant can be grown in three ways:

  • In the ground... Purchase specialized soil - for dracaena. It is allowed to use garden soil with sand in a ratio of 3: 1.
  • Surprisingly, Dracaena Sander can evolve in water! Does not tolerate chlorinated tap water, it must be soft. The easiest way is to use melt water. To do this, pour tap water into a plastic bottle, place it in the freezer, then defrost it and use it to grow bamboo. Change every 14 days, top up as it evaporates. In order for the bamboo grown in water to be strong, healthy, not yellow, you need to add a fertilizer for dracaena. You can use products to extend the life of cut flowers. It is allowed to use rainwater. Charcoal must be added for disinfection.
  • In hydrogel... This substance can have a various decorative particle shape and be different in color, it looks spectacular in a transparent container. The hydrogel provides the dracaena with moisture and nutrients, and performs a decorative function.

Knowing the preferences of an exotic pet, even novice gardeners will easily achieve success:

  1. The plant grows best on the east or west window of the house.
  2. Doesn't like cold draft.
  3. Does not tolerate direct sunlight.
  4. In summer, when grown in soil, provide frequent, abundant watering. The soil should always be moist. Water sparingly in winter.
  5. When grown in water, when the plant has grown stronger and its stems have become thicker, it is better to place the dracaena in the ground for further vegetation, because the soil contains many nutrients necessary for active growth.
  6. When grown in soil, feed 1 time in 3 months with a special fertilizer for dracaena according to the instructions.
  7. There should be no dust on bamboo leaves! Therefore, they must be wiped with a damp sponge. Place a container of water next to it to humidify the air. It is undesirable to spray, because this can lead to rotting of areas of the stem.
  8. If part of the plant turns yellow, then it must be cut off, and the healthy part should be placed in melt water at room temperature, it will quickly take root. Change water every 14 days. Use a garden pruner with short blades for pruning, as the stem is hard. Cutting points must be treated with garden varnish, coal, candle wax or ash for disinfection.
  9. Attention! Dracaena needs to be fed rarely, no more than 1 time in 3-4 weeks. From an excess of feeding, she can die.

How to curl stems

Since the shoots grow quickly, they can be shaped in a variety of ways. It is because of this feature that the plant has become a favorite for growing in indoor gardens. The most common and attractive is the spiral shape.

Methods for shaping bamboo:

  • Purchase special curved plastic tubes. Fill the shoots inside them. After a few weeks, the tubes are removed, the stems will retain their acquired shape.
  • To form the trunk of a young seedling in the form of a spiral, you need to wind coconut fiber on a rod (pencil, straight stick, etc.). Stick the rod into the pot next to the young plant. As the seedling grows, while its stem is flexible, you need to guide it around the support, fixing it with wire.
  • A wire frame can be used for shaping. As we grow, we fix the shoot with a wire in the desired position. After obtaining the desired shape, the frame is removed, the stems will remain curved.

For long-term preservation of the appearance resembling bamboo, you need to remove the growing side shoots with a pruner.

If you do not form shoots in the form of a spiral, then a "tree" grows with a thick trunk and leaves at the top, reminiscent of a palm tree.

Reproduction of dracaena Sander

On the stem of the plant are the so-called. constrictions, in these places there are dormant buds. Awakened buds begin to form young shoots. You can separate the young shoot from the mother plant with a pruner and place it in the water. It will take root quickly. Shoots that have reached a length of 10-13 cm are subject to separation.

Place the seedling with roots in a pot with soil, cover the roots with earth, compact. The root system is strong, the plant is unpretentious and tenacious.

It is customary to give the bamboo of happiness to women and men for various reasons. It is a great addition to add variety to flower arrangements and is beautiful on its own.

It is very easy to grow bamboo at home. Reproduction is also not difficult, and planting and leaving will bring only positive emotions. Photos will help you get an idea of your future exotic pet!

It has become extremely popular to grow indoor bamboo at home as a houseplant, especially since it can be used to create an original exotic composition.

All About Bamboo: Feng Shui Growing

symbol of luck

plant of happiness

The ancient teaching of feng shui says that this plant will become a source of good luck and happiness for the person who started growing it.

That is why quite a few people strive to acquire the kind of dracaena Sander, which, in fact, is called the bamboo of happiness and is perfectly grown as a houseplant.

According to the philosophy that has come down to us from China, if you put a "tree of happiness" in the southeastern room, and next to place a toad sculpture with coins, then luck and financial well-being will never leave this house.

What matters is the number of stems grown in one pot.

  1. If there are 3 of them, they will help attract good luck in business. It will be better to put these pots in the office.
  2. 5 stems symbolizes personal happiness, and it is better to put such an interior decoration, of course, in the bedroom.
  3. 7-fold stems predict good good health
  4. Well, in order to achieve a positive effect on all aspects of life, the Feng Shui technique recommends growing 21 stems in one pot.

Home conditions are not suitable for a species growing wild in nature, and it is unsuitable for decoration because of its enormous growth and tough stems that cannot be intertwined. The wild bamboo plant has nothing to do with the indoor specimen of the same name, moreover, they are not even relatives. In nature, where bamboo grows, it reaches as much as 50 meters in length and is considered the tallest herbaceous species. It is used by local people for collecting juice, as well as for construction.

Bamboo houseplant home care: what it looks like

bamboo spiral

The plant has a bare stem, which has green leaves at the end. At home, on the windowsill, the created composition with the participation of bamboo in a vase will look very exotic. The color of the stems can be both emerald green and yellow-straw. But the leaves and shoots will have a more intense color only if you provide good illumination throughout the day.

Bamboo stems have tremendous flexibility, they are able to twist into a variety of spiral shapes, it is this feature that made the plant suitable for creating bonsai. Unfortunately, the flowering of dracaena Sander in the home is extremely rare.

Species variety of indoor pets

Of particular note are several types of indoor bamboo that have gained the most popularity among plant lovers. Each of them has an individual shape and color of leaves, as well as a different shape of the stems. The most famous and adapted for growing at home include the following.

Lucky Bamboo

The main one has a beautiful name - bamboo Lucky spiral home care is easier than the rest, but gardeners call it a little simpler -. This plant can be classified as less demanding in care, but at the same time in need of constant provision with a special microclimate.

Dracaena does not complain about rare watering and dry soil, but rather welcomes. Most often, the plant is used as a landscaping area of a room or as part of an interior design.

Reproduction takes place by seed or with the help of cuttings, due to the lack of root layers. Initially, Lucky's appearance is straight, and it is forced to spiral.

Bamboo Muriel

The largest indoor specimen with a stem height of about 2.5 meters is in the Muriel variety. This type is an excellent solution for a large room or growing in a garden. The plant gets along very well with any frame, but due to its huge size, care is very difficult, especially if it is done by one person.

Variegated

The variegated bamboo achieved the greatest decorative value, and all thanks to its crown with an unusual color.

The leaves are slightly light green, and the edge is decorated with small white blotches. The stem has a green-yellow color, it is interesting that by the time of transplantation to a new place, it becomes covered with snow-white specks.

There is one significant drawback: the plant quickly becomes unattractive due to the drying out of the foliage, combined with the active change of the crown.

In addition to these representatives in the indoor version, there are:

  1. Multilayer with narrow foliage
  2. Bluish or undersized, growing in miniature sizes, which rarely exceed the 40 cm mark
  3. Variegated with decorative foliage, has an average height of up to 1 meter
  4. The brilliant variety is represented by the bright emerald green of narrow leaves.
Varieties for open ground in Russia

How is bamboo growing in the open field in Russia? For moderately climatic regions of the Russian Federation, exceptionally frost-resistant species that can be planted in open ground are suitable. Chinese phyloblast (sinarundinaria pleioblastus photo) will not like such conditions. The plant will be able to withstand a short period of frost down to -20 ° C. If the indicator becomes lower, then the plant will freeze to the ground level. In some areas, the earthen layer often freezes, in which case the phyloblast will die from frostbite. The ideal temperature for the species is +30 -9 degrees.

Several species can be grown in the Moscow region, called Sasa bamboo (Sasa tsuboiana). Their beauty is no worse than that of the southern varieties and there is not a drop in height: there are from 30 cm to 3 meters.

How to grow bamboo at home?

The tree of luck is an amazing plant, for its successful maintenance, you can use not only flower pots, but also an aquatic environment. While the initial stage of growth is underway, the stem can be given any shape a person needs. What are the ways of growing, and what are their features?

Use of the aquatic environment

The homeland is located in the forests of the tropics, and there are not so many dry places, which is why some plants have moved into the water.

How to care for bamboo in the water? To create conditions as close as possible to natural, a special environment is created for the plant.

Before planting, the root part is washed, too long shoots can be cut as necessary. Cut to a third of the entire rhizome, and this will not harm him, because the growth rate of bamboo is impressive.

Any suitable item at the discretion of the grower is suitable as a container. You can use decorative stones to make the exposition more interesting, but before that, do not forget to treat them with boiling water. The stem parts are lowered into the selected container, pebbles are laid out carefully, then it is the turn of the main component - water.

Plant lover notes... This method of cultivation involves the use of distilled or melt water. There shouldn't be any problem with the last component. Water is poured into a plastic bottle and sent to the freezer. When defrosting, it is recommended to throw out the dull core of the ice where all kinds of harmful components settle together with chlorine.

When caring for a plant, the water should be systematically changed, most often this procedure is carried out every 14 days. If an unpleasant odor, bubbles, foam, sediment begins to appear, then the fluid should be changed more often. The presence of yellow foliage is an indicator for an immediate water change.

It is worth considering that with such a specific growing method, plants need fertilizing, which is applied every 30 days.

Using a hydrogel

The procedure is similar to the one described above, but here they use not stones, but granules.

How does bamboo grow in a hydrogel? It has a specific feature: after a while, change the color, all that is needed is to systematically add a certain amount of water. Top dressing is applied twice a year.

It is important not to forget about the root system, it should not dry out or be bare, protruding over the granules.

Of course, such an original way of growing will be a highlight in the overall interior of the room.

Application of soil

This method can be classified as traditional. It is easy to find the necessary bamboo soil, in specialized stores there is a huge assortment of different soils that are suitable for dracaena. You can prepare the soil with your own hands, taking into account some important aspects.

Potted bamboo should be developed along with a good drainage system to prevent possible:

  • mold formation
  • accumulation of excess moisture
  • the appearance of hostile microorganisms

In one container with the earth, you can plant several stalks of bamboo dracaena. To make it more convenient to care for them, as well as to give a more decorative look, it is recommended to tie several plants into a bundle with a braid string, choosing the color you like. Any container is suitable for a pot, not just traditional fixtures. Some people use glasses, vases. As soon as the pet begins to "outgrow" its house, it is transplanted into a bucket or deep jug. If the height of the plant exceeds 0.8 meters, it is recommended to rearrange the container with it from the surface to the floor in the immediate vicinity of the window opening or next to the light source.

Subtleties of care

Transplant basics

It's important to know! Bamboo is very painful for transplanting, and therefore if there are no important prerequisites for this procedure, then you should refrain from it.

First of all, the required capacity is selected. There should be some room in it for the root system, but not very much. Ideal if the rhizome freely enters the pot and leaves 4 cm of free space.

Secondly, drainage holes are made, if they are not. Install the pan so that excess liquid accumulates in it. A drainage layer is laid along the bottom of the pot.

After these manipulations, the dracaena is planted in a container and filled with earth, it does not need to be carefully tamped, if necessary, you can simply add more soil. The plant in a new place must be shed properly, a sufficient amount of time is given to the transplant procedure. Excess water is poured out of the pan, after which the pot with bamboo is rearranged to a place specified for cultivation.

How to trim

pruning bamboo

Such a procedure is carried out if it is needed to create an attractive appearance or provide the desired shape. The owner must pay enough attention to the root system to remove defective, dry shoots.

Pruning branches from below and removing sections of insufficient thickness will help maintain decorative appeal. It is possible to give a certain shape to the stems only while the plant is still a seedling; garden twine or thick wire is used for garter.

Bamboo of happiness reproduction at home

There are several ways to breed dracaena:

Using offspring and tops requires a lot of patience, and remember that this method will take time and effort. This breeding method is a rather difficult event.

But the most difficult is the seed option. and at home, plants grow very rarely. Sow seeds, wait until the seedlings appear, and then take proper care of them for a long time. Not every grower will do this.

Root division

Another method is used by plant lovers and it is called root. It consists in neatly separating the process from the central part of the root. The main thing is to prevent rupture or damage. Allows the separation of only mature specimens with root leaves. To process the cut site, a garden pitch is used, which protects the plant from infections or the appearance of rot. Thanks to this method, the root system is updated. The method is a preventive measure against corrosion and death of the root part.

Propagation by cuttings

Cutting is the most commonly used, it is the most affordable, moreover, it is ideal for a representative of this family.

How to propagate bamboo by cuttings at home? Using cuttings is very simple, and besides, you do not need to transplant the plant. It is best to breed with the onset of spring. For cutting, a part with a significant presence of a flank node is suitable, from which branching will begin in the future. The selected part is carefully separated from the main plant and placed in a container with earth or water for the emergence of roots. If the second option is chosen, then it is important to remember about the systematic water change. After 30 - 48 days, the root system will begin to develop. Planting in the soil is carried out according to the transplant rules.

What can bamboo hurt

Plant health problems arise from improper care:

  • The appearance of dark spots indicates the presence of a fungus. Fungicides are used for treatment, and the room with bamboo should be regularly ventilated;
  • There is no growth, most likely, the matter is in the lack of mineral components. It is necessary to apply fertilizers, but the main thing is not to overdo it with their amount;
  • Darkening and softening of the leaves. It happens when the temperature regime is violated. At low rates, the pet sheds leaves. The problem can be easily solved by installing additional heaters.
  • Why do the leaves turn yellow? Subject to all conditions, proper care can begin to turn yellow and dry foliage. Most often this indicates the presence of some kind of disease. Infection can be carried even with store-bought soil. Or get it from ticks, aphids that have moved from plants in the vicinity.

Good luck bamboo belongs to undemanding and unpretentious plants. If the care is correct, it will immediately begin to grow rapidly and delight the owner with a bright color and original look.

The plant can be used as an original part of the decor or as a decoration in apartment design. Especially if you form the stem in a timely and correct manner, twisting and turning it in different directions. Also, do not forget about the symbolism of this handsome man, because, what if it really is with its help it will turn out to attract happiness, good luck and health to yourself?

Having thought about the choice in favor of one or another type of indoor bamboo flower, it is worth giving preference to dracaena.

Important to remember that over-caring for bamboo can be just as dangerous as not having enough.

Decorative bamboo disease and care video:

Dracaena Sandera, "lucky bamboo", "indoor bamboo" is a popular houseplant sold as coiled green stems. In Asian countries, the flower has been considered a symbol of good luck and prosperity for four centuries. For this purpose, it is used in the practice of Feng Shui.

According to him, it is recommended to tie a red or yellow ribbon to a bamboo houseplant, which enhances the positive effect of finding the plant in the house. Sometimes figures of a dog, an elephant and other animals are planted in a pot with a dragon tree. The vase must have an odd number of stems, the properties of the talisman depend on this:

  • three stems - should attract good luck,
  • five - wealth,
  • seven - will give health,
  • twenty-one is the general welfare.

In contact with

The ability to grow without soil and regrow lateral shoots when pruned makes the "lucky bamboo" a real boon for florists. With its help, group and single flower arrangements are compiled, which retain an attractive appearance for a long time and do not require special care. Designers use the plant as an imitation of real bamboo when decorating interiors in ethnic style.

The shape of the stems in the form of a spiral is given to the plant artificially, if you do not twist them specially, the dracaena will simply grow up and grow new leaves, becoming more like a palm tree than a bamboo. To make the dracaena look like bamboo, the lower leaves are torn off. In indoor conditions, the plant practically does not bloom. To form a fluffy crown and achieve a large number of shoots, a small horizontal incision is made on the trunk.

Growing bamboo in water at home

After purchase, dracaena is placed in a vase with clean, settled water, where it builds up the root system. The liquid level should be 2-3 cm above the roots of the plant, it is permissible to limit it to 6-8 cm. The stems should not be too deep, otherwise they may rot.

The water is changed once a week, adding periodically. They are taken several times less than the proportion indicated on the package. It is better to reduce the dose of top dressing, because of the risk of burning the roots of the plant. If you do not do this, the "Lucky Bamboo" will stop developing, as the plant will have nowhere to take nutrients from.

When replacing the liquid, it is advisable to rinse the roots, it is even better to add two tablets of activated carbon. Fallen leaves that have accidentally fallen into the water must be removed to prevent decay.

This type of dracaena, like others, does not like direct sunlight: in bright light, the leaves turn pale, and then turn yellow and fall off. It is better to put the flower in partial shade, away from drafts. It can grow even in a windowless room, making it a suitable plant for dark rooms and offices.

Growing "home bamboo" is not much different from the water method. Dry granules are soaked in water, you can immediately with fertilizer. When they swell, the plant is placed in a vase and covered with ready-made aqua soil on top. It looks very neat and aesthetically pleasing, especially if the balls are of different colors.

Buy a pot suitable for the root system of the plant, you do not need to take too large. A thick drainage made of expanded clay or polystyrene is laid at the bottom. After planting, the soil is watered abundantly with clean water.

The "lucky bamboo" should be replanted every spring. The pot is taken 2-3 cm wider than the previous one. Due to the fact that most dracaena have a very delicate root system, it is better to transplant it by transshipment without affecting the earthen lump.

This plant requires abundant watering, unlike the rest of the species. It is produced when the topsoil dries out 2 cm deep. The potting medium should always be slightly damp. Dracaena leaves should be wiped and sprayed to remove dust. She is indifferent to dry air, but the temperature is needed at least 17 degrees.

The easiest way to propagate dracaena is by cuttings. To do this, a piece of the stem or apical cutting is cut off, the cut must be sprinkled with crushed coal. It is better to take shoots with dormant buds, the roots of them appear faster.

Cuttings root easily in water. They can also be rooted in moist soil, peat or sand under the bag, after dusting the lower part with a root formation enhancer. For rooting cuttings, a temperature of 23 to 25 degrees is needed.

There is a breeding option bamboo seed at home... They are soaked for five days and sown in a mixture of peat and sand. Seeds germinate for about six months. The temperature should be 28 degrees Celsius.

Diseases and pests

Dracaena Sander rarely gets sick and is damaged by pests. Sometimes it can be amazed or. The fight against them consists in the use of special insecticides (for example).

Common diseases of bamboo happiness:

  • dry leaf tips, dry leaf edges - insufficient watering, low air temperature;
  • yellowing of the lower leaves - natural aging or lack of nutrients;
  • rolling leaves - cold or drafts;
  • the appearance of dry spots - sunburn;
  • black spots - it is possible that the plant is affected by a fungal disease, it should be treated with fungicides;
  • trunk rot - arises for various reasons, in order to save the dracaena, the rotten part must be cut off, the stalk must be re-rooted;
  • the dull color of the leaf is a consequence of bright light.

How to spin bamboo at home

Twisting the dracaena stalk at home is a difficult and time-consuming process. There are several ways to do this, but it is worth considering before you start: will the result be worth the effort and suffering of the plant?

  • Option number 1. The easiest way is to fix the young shoot on a stick or cylinder with a wire. When it becomes woody, remove the wire.
  • Option number 2. If you find a special tube in the form of a spiral, into which the shoots can be directed, they will have to take its shape. This method is quite difficult to execute, because even having found such a spiral, you still need to figure out how to remove it from the plant later.
  • Option number 3. You need to place the flower in a box with three walls. It will begin to reach for the light and form a curved stem. Also a rather complicated way: you need to look for a place for the box and do not forget to turn the dracaena.

Lucky Bamboo is a wonderful gift. It can be shaped by giving different shapes to the stems. The plant is unpretentious, suitable for darkened rooms with dry air and is very decorative.

The indoor plant bamboo is an evergreen, perennial, with a green fleshy trunk, on which lanceolate leaves are located on top. In nature, it can reach a height of up to several meters, at home its height is usually limited, not allowing it to grow above 1 m - a plant that is too tall loses its decorative appeal, unless we are talking about some very refined trunk shape.

In fact, the houseplant, which we usually call "indoor bamboo", looks like a real wild-growing bamboo only outwardly. But in fact, it is called Dracaena Sandera and is one of the types of shrub dracaena... In culture, it blooms extremely rarely, with small white flowers that have a sweetish aroma. Indoor bamboo is valued for its decorative appearance, attracting with its green foliage and the ability to form an unusual trunk. And also - if you believe Feng Shui, then it brings good luck and attracts money to the house.

Indoor bamboo: care and reproduction

As a houseplant, bamboo is not very demanding, caring for it is relatively easy. It is very important for him to choose the right lighting - he loves bright, but diffused light, while his leaves cannot stand the direct rays of the sun - they turn yellow and can wither. The best place for him is east or southeast windows. If the leaves began to turn yellow, then one of the reasons may be an excessive amount of light, in which case the plant can even be rearranged in partial shade

Temperature

Despite its tropical origin, indoor bamboo does not tolerate too high a temperature, if it exceeds 35 ° C, then it will die. The optimum temperature at which the care will give the best results is in the range of 22-24 ° C, in winter the temperature in the room can drop to 14-16 ° C, but not lower than 12 ° C.

Humidity

The plant is not demanding on the level of humidity, but if the air is too dry, then it is recommended to spray. Once a month, it is advisable to wipe the leaves with a damp cloth.

Landing

To grow bamboo, you can use a ready-made universal soil (or special for dracaena), or prepare a soil mixture yourself, mixing in equal parts humus, peat, sand, turf and leaves. An important requirement is good drainage, so there should be not only a hole in the pot, but also additional drainage at the bottom of expanded clay or pebbles. Despite the fact that bamboo is very fond of moisture, its stagnation will lead to damage to the root system.

Indoor bamboo grown in water looks very decorative and impressive. For this, a beautiful transparent vase is selected, beautiful pebbles are poured inside and a bamboo stalk is installed. Water is used necessarily distilled, as an option - rain or thawed, room temperature. The main care for such a "planting" is to completely change the water every two weeks, while it is necessary to add mineral fertilizers used to feed the dracaena plants. Otherwise, due to lack of nutrients, bamboo leaves turn yellow and may fall off.

If the water begins to smell unpleasant or has lost its transparency, has become cloudy, then it must be replaced without waiting for the expiration of 2 weeks. Another sign that the water is not suitable and requires replacement - the leaves of the plant begin to turn yellow. Bamboo grown in aquagel looks very expressive in the photo, while the rules of care remain the same as when grown in water.

Advice! It is necessary to maintain a low water level in the vase, otherwise small, but very unattractive roots will begin to break through the entire length of the trunk in the water.

Watering

In summer, bamboo needs frequent and abundant watering as soon as the soil in the pot is dry. In the off-season and winter, the plant is watered moderately, keeping the soil slightly moist.

Transfer

Up to three years old, a young plant is transplanted annually, while choosing a larger pot, because bamboo grows quite quickly. An adult bamboo needs replanting every 3 years.

Top dressing

In summer, the flower is fertilized with mineral fertilizers for dracaena once every 3 weeks, in winter - once every 2 months. Application of liquid organic fertilizers based on peat is acceptable.

Pruning

Strongly grown bamboo does not look very attractive, so it is advisable to prune it annually.

Advice! To make the cut look beautiful, it is carried out with special scissors immediately above the knot.

When pruning, long shoots are cut from all sides, if necessary, external reeds are removed at ground level. By removing the side shoots from the right sides, you can simulate the appearance and shape of the bamboo, giving it the shape of your own free will. The cuttings obtained during pruning can be used for propagation in the future. If, after cutting, the new shoot does not germinate, then the top is cut - after that a new shoot should break through.

Advice! Be sure to cut off the yellowed stems and leaves. After letting the cut site dry out a little, it must be sprinkled with charcoal powder or lubricated with soft wax.

Reproduction

The best way to propagate indoor bamboo is vegetative; for this, cuttings remaining after cutting are used, while discarding the yellowed sections of the trunk. Propagation by cuttings can be carried out at any time of the year. And although you can sometimes find seeds of homemade bamboo in flower shops, it is almost impossible to reproduce it in this way at home.

The stalk must be placed in water until roots appear. After that, it is rooted by choosing a spacious pot and filling it with ready-made soil mixture for dracaena. The main requirements for reproduction to go well and the young plant to take over well and grow is sufficient watering, a lot of light and fertilization every 2 weeks.

How to spin a bamboo trunk

Many buyers of indoor bamboo are attracted by the opportunity to get a trunk of an unusual shape, the most common type is twisted (spiral). This will require special care, this process is not quick, so patience will be required:

  • when planting a young cutting, it is placed vertically, but for the time when the buds are formed, it must be completely covered with something, leaving only a small hole (window) through which light will penetrate. The sprouts will tend towards him, and in order to "curl" them, it will be necessary to periodically rotate either the flower, changing its position towards the window, or the opaque structure itself. A variant of this design is a cardboard box that completely hides the bamboo. One side is cut out in it, as the stem grows, the box is gradually turned. In a year, using this method, you can get only one spiral.
  • place the stalk in the water horizontally to rise above the water, the plant will tend to grow upward. When the direction of the trunk changes slightly, the plant is turned again. The disadvantage of this method is that bamboo can release roots while in the water.

Bamboo is a tropical plant that naturally grows to a height of 30-40 meters. It is known for being able to stretch several tens of centimeters per day. But at home, other species are used that do not show such impressive results and do not reach gigantic sizes. They are great for growing in a city apartment.

In this article, you will learn how to grow bamboo at home, whether it is possible to propagate it at home, the problems that arise while it grows, and much more.

Decorative views, photo

Bamboo is grown in tubs, which grows to a height of 2-3, sometimes 4 meters... These types include:

  • polysyllabic;
  • polysyllabic variegated;
  • shiny - stands out for its purple stems;
  • Muriel - has yellow stems.

There are also dwarf forms of bamboo, which are grown in pots at home... Their height does not exceed 1 m. These include:

  • bluish (up to 40 cm);
  • kumasaza, an interesting species that stands out for its zigzag flattened stems;
  • variegated - grows up to 1 m in height, has variegated leaves with cream-colored stripes.

Dracaena Sander

Also, the dracaena Sander plant is often called decorative or indoor bamboo.

Outwardly, it really looks like bamboo, but in fact is a type of shrub dracaena.

It is great for growing at home, it looks good, its stem can be curled, creating different interesting shapes.

One of the main differences between dracaena and bamboo is a fleshy rather than a hollow stem.

It reaches a height of one meter, leaves are gray-green up to 20-25 cm long.

Dracaena Sander blooms with small white flowers.

How to plant in soil

For the cultivation of an indoor flower such as bamboo, heavy, nutritious soil is suitable at home. The best option is clay-sod soil, in which peat and humus must be added in a ratio of 2: 1: 1.

You need to fertilize the young shoot more often, a good option is to apply top dressing once every two weeks.

Landing into the water

It is not necessary to plant dracaena in the ground - it grows well in water, even better than in the ground.

You need to find a suitable ceramic or glass container and place the plant in it.

At the bottom, you need to put pebbles or glass balls, which will catch the roots.

It is only necessary to periodically change the water and rinse the leaves from dust.

Tap water won't work, it is better to use thawed or rainwater.

Thawing is easy to make yourself- for this you need to pour the same tap water into a bottle, freeze it, and then defrost it.

You can also grow bamboo in water, but still the main way to plant it at home is in a pot with soil.

Growing from seeds

Dracaena can be grown at home and from seeds... This method is more complicated, but more interesting than planting a rhizome or cutting. You need to act as follows:

  • soak the seeds in gauze until they start to sprout;
  • drop them in a box with soil consisting of earth, sand and drainage in a ratio of 2: 1: 1;
  • spray daily seedlings from a spray bottle;
  • cover the box with polyethylene, creating greenhouse conditions for the seedlings: there should be a lot of moisture, heat and light;
  • so that young plants do not rot, the greenhouse needs to be ventilated three times a day.

When the seedlings reach a height of five centimeters, the strongest of them need to be transplanted into pots, in which they will grow further.

Watering

In the summer, when the plant is actively growing, it must be watered very abundantly... The ground must be constantly moist.

If there is not enough water, brown spots will appear on the leaves, the leaves will curl. If there is too much water, the foliage will begin to hang down.

But the plant is not very demanding on air humidity. However, if the room is dry, its leaves are worth spray periodically from a spray bottle.

To feed the plant, you must use organic or complex fertilizers. In the spring and summer feeding can be done every two months, in autumn and winter - less often.

With enough nutrients, growth will be fast; if there is not enough nutrition, it will slow down.

Lighting

The plant loves light, but does not tolerate bright direct sunlight. Therefore, a pot or tub with a plant in the spring and in summer you need to keep in a bright place but avoiding overly lit areas.

In autumn and winter, when there is not enough natural light, you can illuminate the plant using fluorescent lamps, but this is usually not necessary.

Temperature

Bamboo is a thermophilic plant, in summer the temperature for its cultivation is from 20 to 32 degrees, in winter - at least 16-18. If the room is colder, the leaves of the plant will darken, lose their rigidity and curl.

How to twist the stems into a spiral

The stalk of indoor bamboo at home can be twisted, creating different unusual twisted spiral shapes.

Most often it is twisted into a spiral. This process is not complicated, but it will take a lot of time:

  • a pot or a tub with a shoot must be covered with a cap with a hole, so that the light falls on the plant from above and from the side;
  • after this, the shoot will begin to stretch towards the window, gradually bending;
  • further, in order to curl the stem into a spiral, the cap must be gradually turned.

It will take a year to get one turn of the spiral. As a cap, you can use a cardboard box with one side cut out.

Reproduction

The easiest way to reproduce is divide the rhizome when transplanting... Thus, several can be obtained from one bush.

Each new root should have two to three shoots or nodules (buds).

When transplanted into suitable soil they will take root without any problems... T

Alternatively, you can simply dig out the rhizome in a pot or tub to cut off the right number of root shoots for the plant to propagate.

Another option is propagation by cuttings. In this case, the stalk formed after cutting the stem must be placed in water and kept there until roots appear. Then it is planted in a pot.

We offer you to watch the video, where you can learn in more detail how bamboo (or Sander's dracaena) multiplies and care for a houseplant at home:

Transfer

Young shoots need to be transplanted from a smaller pot to a larger one once a year. Adult plants are usually transplanted every two to three years.

In order for the transplant to be successful, several rules must be followed:

  • it is better to transplant the plant in April-May, at which time it tolerates such a procedure as well as possible;
  • when transplanting, no mineral fertilizers can be added;
  • you can fertilize the soil with them in two to three weeks by adding them to the water for irrigation.

Why leaves turn yellow and how to deal with it

Bamboo leaves turn yellow and wither due to excess light: as mentioned above, despite the fact that this plant is very photophilous, it does not tolerate direct sunlight well.

Therefore, if yellowing and drying of the foliage appears, it is better to rearrange it away from the window perhaps even place in partial shade.

This will prevent the problem from getting worse. However, those leaves that have already turned yellow must be removed, while lubricating the cut with wax or sprinkling with charcoal powder.

Other possible causes of yellowing- insufficient watering, use of hard water for irrigation and excess fertilizers. In order to be on the safe side, it is necessary to eliminate all these unfavorable factors.
