From the middle of spring, beautiful lush chubushnik bushes bloom in the gardens of Russia. They are abundantly covered with white buds, exuding a magnificent sweetish-fresh aroma. You will find a description of such a plant, characteristics of popular varieties, planting and caring for a chubushnik in this article.

Chubushnik belongs to the hydrangea family, and its genus has at least 70 different varieties. The Russian name for chubushnik comes from the word “chubuk”, which was used to denote a certain part of the pipe for smoking. The fact is that such a detail was made precisely from the wood of the described plant. By the way, the chubushnik has found application in the manufacture of other handicrafts, for example, musical instruments: flutes and pipes. Solid, sturdy trunks and branches are perfect for creating such objects.

Very often the mock-orange is mistakenly called jasmine, although these plants belong to completely different families and differ in appearance. The only similarity, due to which the mock-orange is confused with the undersized indoor jasmine, is the fragrant aroma of plant flowers.

In addition to its beauty, abundant flowering and an indescribable smell, the culture can please the owners with its unpretentious care. Growing in the same place for over 10 years, the mock-orange requires minimal care. The plant perfectly tolerates prolonged frosts and does not lose the ability to bloom, even in a small shade. All the activities that are required to maintain the life of the shrub are in rare organic fertilizing, as well as in periodic watering in dry weather.

Chubushnik: popular varieties

As indicated earlier, the genus of this culture includes about 70 different types of shrubs, but we would like to name the most popular varieties, describing their main characteristics:

  1. Chubushnik "Variegata" is popular among gardeners because it looks very impressive. The decorativeness of this culture is due not only to the presence of large snow-white inflorescences, but also to the magnificent view of the foliage, which is painted in 2 contrasting shades. Green in the middle, the leaf of this mock-orange at the edges has a light, almost white border. The bush of the plant itself grows up to 2.5 m and looks quite lush and spreading, reaching almost the same size in diameter as in height. Chubushnik "Variegata" blooms in late spring, covered with snow-white fragrant buds. The flowering period lasts about 20-25 days. After the petals fly around from its buds, small boxes with seeds are formed in their place. This plant variety tolerates shade well, but will flower better if planted in a well-lit area. The culture loves moist and nutritious soil, but before planting it, do not forget to make good drainage, because such a mock-orange cannot stand stagnant water. In cold summers the variety "Variegata" does not bloom very abundantly, but it reacts perfectly to organic and mineral fertilizers, growing in the crown and giving more buds. It is advisable to insulate young plants in the first winter after their planting. Chubushnik "Variegata" is planted at the end of September or in spring, before the beginning of the growing season. This medium-sized variety, due to its splendor, is well suited for the formation of hedges in the garden.
  2. Chubushnik "Virgin" also belongs to medium-sized varieties and reaches a height of 1.5 to 2.5 m. The culture blooms from May to June, especially abundantly covered with buds if it grows in a well-lit area and sufficiently moist soil. The shrub does not require careful maintenance, it only needs to be watered from time to time, making sure that the soil does not dry out. It is also advisable to periodically loosen the top layer of the earth with a rake in order to give the roots air access and prevent the stagnation of excess moisture in the soil. In terms of soil, the variety "Virginal" is completely unpretentious, moreover, this species is resistant to diseases and tolerates prolonged cold and frost well. Like the previous variety, this chubushnik is often used in the creation of hedges, borders and various flower arrangements.
  3. Terry mock-orange of the "Snowstorm" variety looks just great during its flowering period. It is covered in abundance with clusters of white lush buds, as a result of which it looks like a tree covered by snow. The diameter of the inflorescences of this variety is large and can reach an indicator of 8-9 cm. The shrub grows up to 3 m in height, and it blooms mainly in July, delighting with its splendor for at least a month. Like many other varieties, "Snowstorm" has a pronounced floral aroma with hints of freshness. The advantage of this type can be considered the fact that it perfectly tolerates frosts and prolonged cold weather. However, it is advisable to cover young bushes in the first winter so that they do not freeze. Chubushnik "Snow storm" blooms well in sunny places, loves moist, but not swampy soil, and also requires periodic pruning, which helps to maintain its decorative effect at a high level. The main pest of this variety is considered to be aphids, the appearance of which can be prevented by timely treatment of the shrub with suitable insecticides. "Blizzard" looks good in hedges, as well as in single plantings.
  4. Chubushnik corona variety "Aureus" has excellent decorative properties not only due to beautiful fragrant flowers, but also the appearance of the foliage. Young leaves, blooming on the bush in spring, are painted in a delicate greenish-yellow tint. During the summer, the foliage gradually changes its color to light green, and in the fall the leaves fall off without turning yellow. The buds of such a chubushnik are rather small and do not stand out too much against the background of the bush itself, but the inflorescences exude a strong and very pleasant smell, which creates a fragrant aura around the bush. This medium-sized variety reaches a height of about 2.5 m, its flowering falls at the very end of spring and lasts about 3 weeks. In order for the chubushnik to have a lush crown and bloom profusely, it should be pruned at least 1 time in 3 years. The plant responds well to feeding with manure. Most often, this culture is used in complex plantings, with its help hedges and curbs are formed. You can also plant such a mock-orange in compositions with other plants, thanks to its bright foliage, it will become the central accent of the plant ensemble.
  5. Chubushnik variety "Pearl" is also very popular among gardeners, the reason for this is the beautiful lush buds, reaching a diameter of 7 cm. This type of chubushnik has double flowers, the snow-white shade of which contrasts favorably with the plain green foliage. This variety belongs to undersized crops and grows no more than 1.3 m in height. The flowering period of the chubushnik falls on the second half of June and lasts about 2-3 weeks. The plant is frost-resistant, easily survives in frosts down to -25 ° C, but blooms profusely only if planted in a sunny area. Prefers fertile, well-fertilized soil as soil. The low growth of bushes allows you to use such a mock-orange not only in flower borders, but also in flower beds along with other flowers.
  6. Chubushnik "Airborne landing" blooms with small buds-bells, the diameter of which does not exceed 3 cm. The flowers of such a plant are not only white, but also light beige. This variety is sometimes also called "Strawberry" because its delicate white blossoms exude an aroma very similar to that of strawberries. A medium-sized shrub of such a mock-orange grows up to 2 m in height, the culture blooms in June or July, depending on the climatic conditions of the strip where it grows. During the flowering period, the plant produces a fairly large number of inflorescences that delight the eye for a long time - about a month. Unlike other varieties of chubushnik, which give abundant flowering in bright sunlight, the Airborne assortment blooms beautifully even in conditions of constant shade. Like many other species, such a mock-orange is frost-resistant, moreover, it is not susceptible to many common plant diseases. The plant is used in flower arrangements and in single plantings.
  7. Chubushnik Gordon can be attributed to tall crops, because his bush reaches 4-6 m in height. This variety blooms in the second half of June, covered with brushes of snow-white inflorescences. The flowering period is approximately 3 weeks. The diameter of one flower is 4-4.5 cm, in the inflorescence there are about 7-9 such flowers. Glossy foliage is painted in a solid dark green shade. This type of culture needs periodic pruning. Due to its tallness, Gordon's mock-orange is not used in complex plantings and hedges, but shrubs can be planted one by one, making them the central decoration of the garden.
  8. Lemoine's chubushnik belongs to hybrid varieties, it was bred by crossing an ordinary chubushnik with small-leaved ones. Such a shrub grows about 3 m in height, and also has a large spreading crown, the diameter of which sometimes reaches at least 3.5 m. Large buds, 5.5 cm in diameter, are painted white and collected in inflorescences. Chubushnik of this variety has a pronounced sweet aroma. The foliage of the plant is monophonic, dark green. With the arrival of autumn, the leaves change color, becoming bright yellow. The culture blooms in July, but in good conditions it can give a second bloom in early autumn. The flowering period is long, about 25 days. Lemoine's hybrid chubushnik is very resistant to cold and frost, easily tolerates shade. In one place, such a bush can grow for at least 20 years, but it needs regular pruning. In landscape design, it is used as part of flower ensembles, grown in green hedges, and is in perfect harmony with other varieties of mock-orange.
  9. Chubushnik variety "Komsomolets" several decades ago was considered the most popular variety of this culture. Its snow-white buds are quite large, up to 5 cm in diameter. They are collected in cluster inflorescences of 7-9 flowers each. The plant has a strong, but very pleasant and delicate scent with sweetish fresh notes. The foliage of such a chubushnik is monochromatic, painted in a dark green color, and has a slightly elongated shape. The bush of culture is small, it grows no more than 2 m. "Komsomolets" blooms in July and pleases with its beauty for at least 25 days. This variety tolerates frost and cold well; adult plants do not need to be covered even when the air temperature drops to -30 ° C. Such a plant does not like drought, therefore it needs regular watering.
  10. Chubushnik variety "Gnome" is a stunted plant, which is clear from its name. The height of the bushes of such a culture does not exceed 0.5 m. At the same time, the bushes are quite spreading and reach a diameter of 70 cm. This type of mock-orange is also interesting because it does not bloom, and the decorative qualities of the plant are due to the appearance of the bush itself. Like many other varieties, "Gnome" is quite winter-hardy. In addition, it is not whimsical to the composition of the soil and grows well on most types of soil. The plant is undemanding to care for, and in landscape design it is most often used to create low borders. Such bushes can be used to decorate the borders of a flower bed, or you can use a mock-orange as part of a flower arrangement. This variety tolerates a haircut, so you can give the bushes a variety of shapes.
  11. Chubushnik variety "Alabaster" blooms with snow-white semi-double buds. The flowers of this culture are very large, their diameter reaches 13 cm. The buds are collected in clusters of 7-10 pieces each. Medium-sized bushes of the "Alabaster" mock-orange grow no more than 1.8 m in height. This culture begins to bloom in the second half of June and is distinguished by a very long flowering period, which lasts 38 days. The main care is timely watering as well as annual pruning.

Features of the reproduction of the chubushnik

Planting a mock-orange can be done in two ways: by cuttings or planting seeds. The simplest and most popular method is cuttings. Young shoots are cut from the bush mainly in the summer months, choosing those branches that have managed to partially stiffen. It is best to remove cuttings from the mother plant during or before flowering. In order for the shoots to release roots, they need to be transferred to an unheated greenhouse or to an open garden, prepared in advance last fall. The so-called "heel", which is a kind of protrusion on the wood, should be present on the transplanted cuttings. It is also desirable that there is at least one bud on the branch, ready to open soon. The cutting should be planted in soil consisting of peat, gravel and sand. Before planting, the soil mixture should be well moistened and sprinkled with fungicide.

The transplanted shoot must be freed from the lower leaves, and then immersed in the soil so that it is tilted 35-40 ° relative to the ground. Leftover leaves should not touch the ground. After that, the sprout is covered with a glass jar or a transparent plastic bag. When the mock-mushroom is propagated by cuttings, it is important to provide the plant with daily moisture, which consists in abundant irrigation of the shoot from the spray bottle.

Sometimes the mock-orange is propagated by seeds, but this type of cultivation is acceptable only for species of plants. During seed propagation, the varietal characteristics of the culture can be lost, so that hybrids are not bred in this way at all. In addition, a seed-grown plant only blooms for 5 years after planting.

Those who are interested in this method of reproduction should know some of its features:

  1. Chubushnik seeds can be planted in spring, autumn, and also during the winter months. At the same time, it is not necessary to stratify the seeds of the culture.
  2. Seeds are planted in winter directly into the snow furrows. In autumn and spring, the grains go deep into the ground, into pre-prepared pits.
  3. The depth of planting of chubushnik seeds is 30 cm. After the seeds are immersed in the soil, the ground should be covered with branches, spruce branches or dry hay. In this form, planting is left until spring. As soon as the snow melts in the garden, branches or grass can be removed.
  4. In spring, it is customary to sow chubushnik seeds in greenhouses. Approximately 1 g of seed is planted per square meter.
  5. Seed germination can be accelerated by soaking them in Epin solution. The material is first put into a tissue bag, and then immersed in the named solution for some time. Then the seeds are transferred to peat for 2 days.

Planting a chubushnik in open ground and caring for the plant

So that the plant takes root in a new place and pleases with abundant flowering from year to year, you should heed some recommendations regarding the cultivation of this crop:

  1. Most varieties of chubushnik tolerate light shade, but they give the most luxuriant flowering only if they grow in a well-lit place. When choosing an area for a flower bed, give preference to those areas where a lot of sunlight falls. In shaded places, the mock-orange will also bloom, but this process can begin much later, and the buds themselves will be small and inconspicuous. The appearance of the foliage also deteriorates in the shade growing in the shade, it becomes smaller, thinner and loses brightness.
  2. Some varieties of culture are quite unpretentious to the soil, but most varieties still love fertile and nutritious soils. The soil for the chubushnik should be moist, but this plant does not like stagnant water in the ground either.
  3. During the hot summer months, mainly in June and July, the crop should be watered regularly. The amount of water is determined at the rate of 20 liters per bush.
  4. Caring for a chubushnik also involves periodic fertilization of the soil. For 1 season, the plant must be fed at least twice. For these purposes, organic fertilizers are used: mullein and manure. Top dressing is carried out until mid-August. Among other things, it is recommended to saturate the soil with minerals every year. Here you can use superphosphate, urea or potassium sulfide. When the bushes have faded, a small amount of wood ash should be added under them.
  5. When planting a chubushnik in a group, a distance of 0.7-0.8 m must be observed between individual bushes. If the crop has a very spreading crown, it is better to increase this distance to 1.5 m.
  6. Transplanted cuttings, like young plant bushes, are better insulated for the winter. For this purpose, straw, hay, spruce branches are well suited. In a snowy winter, you can simply cover the plantings with a large pile of snow.
  7. Chubushnik is quite resistant to plant diseases and pests, but sometimes it can be affected by aphids or spider mites. If a similar problem occurs, the bushes, like the ground around them, need to be treated with insecticides.

Chubushnik pruning

Chubushnik grows fast enough and, in order to keep it tidy, you should periodically cut the crop. Some plant varieties are pruned up to 2 times a year. If you do not carry out timely pruning, the shrub begins to bloom worse, the inflorescences themselves become smaller and lose their decorative appearance.

The main branches of the mock-orange are cut into 1-2 strong buds, but weak shoots are completely removed, and they do this at any time of the year. When the growing season begins, a large number of new shoots appear on the plant, located near the main branches. Several new strong shoots also appear at the bottom of the crown. When pruning, all weak branches are removed completely, and strong ones are shortened so that they harmoniously fit into the shape of the bush. If the shrub is too tall, it can also be shortened at the top.

A year later, when the old branches have faded, they are cut off along with new weak shoots. Around October, a new growth grows to 1 m in length and acquires small branches, which will release inflorescences in the next season.

Too thickened and spreading crowns should be thinned, removing ¼ of all old branches.

Common mock orange is an ornamental deciduous shrub of the Hortensiev family, visually reminiscent of fragrant jasmine and many mistakenly identify it with this plant. Chubushnik is well known for a long time and enjoys well-deserved popularity, and owes its name to an ordinary pipe for smoking. The strong wood of the plant, combined with the soft center, was the ideal material for making stems and mouthpieces. The perennial shrub is distinguished by a large number of varieties and was widely distributed in the wild in Europe, Asia and North America; today, new cultivated specimens appear from incessant breeding work around the world.

Reproduction of chubushnik

Chubushnik can be bred by seeds, dividing the bush, layering or cuttings.

Pre-soaked seeds must be sown under a film or in a greenhouse, since the germinated seedlings are very small in size. Already in the second half of summer, they can be moved to the garden bed, where by autumn the seedlings will grow to a height of about 20 centimeters. Already in the second or third year of growth, new plants can be moved to a permanent residence in a prepared bed before the onset of severe frosts. For the winter, cover the street bed with spruce branches, and in the spring, young shoots will appear faster from the seeds, fed by the moisture of the melting snow. And although seedlings grown from seeds are considered more hardened, this method is not popular, since the seedling has a long flowering period - almost 7-8 years.

The method of dividing a bush is mainly used only by amateur gardeners when transplanting plants and its implementation is identical to the division of other flowering shrubs.

The most popular breeding methods for varietal seedlings include propagation by layering and cuttings.

The most common is vegetative propagation, since the mock-orange is easy to cut by cuttings. To do this, in the fall, from annual, average thickness of shoots, it is necessary to prepare cuttings, about 15-20 centimeters long, making one cut from the bottom near the node and the second from above - above the upper pair of buds. For the winter, cuttings can be placed in the basement in wet sand or buried in a quiet place in the ground. With the arrival of spring, after the snow has completely melted, the cuttings must be planted in a mixture of sand and peat. Shoots in the form of short twigs bearing flowers, in the initial stage of lignification, are suitable for use on summer cuttings. The cuttings should have at least one internode, about 5 centimeters long, without the previously cut off upper part of the shoot with flowers, and not less than two pairs of leaves, which must be reduced by half in order to reduce the area of evaporation. After that, summer cuttings must be planted in a mixture of sand and peat to a depth of 1 centimeter, protected from direct sunlight. It is advisable to cover the place with glass, and spray the cuttings every day, after about 2 - 4 weeks they will take root and they can be transplanted into open ground, not forgetting to water and loosen the soil around them. Reproduction by layering is carried out in early spring. To do this, you need to choose the strongest lignified branch, bend it to the ground, lay it in a pre-prepared depression, fix it in several places with wire and cover it with earth and peat. After a month and a half, new shoots will appear, which must be hilled several times and weeds removed. In autumn, young bushes can be separated and planted in a place of constant growth.

Beautifully flowering chubushnik shrubs are quite popular due to the variety of forms; plant heights, including dwarf varieties - up to 50-60 centimeters tall; elegant leaves not only in bright colors, but also framed by stripes or borders of a different color and delightfully fragrant flowers. And this is not the ultimate dream, from incessant breeding work, new species of this extraordinary plant continue to appear, and I want to believe that among them, you will definitely be able to choose the one that will become a worthy and favorite decoration of your site.

Although the mock orange has no botanical relation to genuine jasmine, for all inhabitants of the climate with harsh winters, it is he who is associated with jasmine. This is the real king among the garden shrubs that are widespread in our gardens. It "earned" such a status by its unpretentiousness, durability, and the beauty of flowering. Chubushniki are one of the easiest flowering shrubs to grow. You will not find a spectacle equal to them in landscape, gentle and romantic beauty in the summer garden. Of course, garden jasmine has competitors, but this does not prevent it from being an inimitable favorite.

Description of the plant

Chubushnik (Philadelphus) is a genus of decorative flowering deciduous shrubs, belonging to the Hortensiev family. Homeland - temperate climatic zone of Europe, Asia and North America. The plant got its Latin name in honor of the Egyptian pharaoh Philadelphus, a big fan of aromatic plants. The Russian version of the name comes from the word "chubuk". This was the name of a part of a pipe for smoking, which in ancient times was made from the trunk of this culture. The hollow stems of the chubushnik are used to make flutes and pipes. Gardeners have a more common common name - "Jasmine Garden" or "False".

The genus Philadelphus has more than 70 species, several of which grow wildly in the Far East and the Caucasus. In horticulture, about 30 species have found application, represented by a variety of garden forms. Chubushnik bushes grow up to 4 m. Leaves are medium-sized, whole, ovoid. The flowers are white or creamy, clustered or solitary, often very fragrant. Varietal specimens have a double flower shape. Fruits are small multi-seeded capsules. The plant is an excellent honey plant.

In Siberia, the height of the bushes is normalized according to the level of snow cover. The plant is able to tolerate frost and air pollution. From year to year, at the beginning of summer, the mock-orange looks like a bride, covered with a "veil" of delicate white flowers. At the same time, the entire garden is filled with an enchanting aroma. In one place, the bushes have been growing for more than ten years.

Planting and proper care

Despite the general undemanding and unpretentious care of this species, in order for the plant to become a real decoration of your garden, it is recommended to create the most favorable conditions for its growth and development. The developed basic recommendations will become practical help in organizing the correct care for the crown mock-orange:

  • seat selection

Given the durability and size of an adult shrub, the choice of a planting site must be approached in advance and carefully. Chubushnik grows equally effectively both in open space and in partial shade, but the quality and duration of the flowering period directly depend on the lighting - in sunny areas the bush blooms longer and the inflorescences are larger;

  • soil composition

In general, the plant is not demanding on soils, the only limitation is that it does not tolerate soil salinization and wetlands. In heavy clay areas, it is advisable to arrange drainage. It is able to fully manifest all its decorative qualities on almost any cultivated soils, therefore, it is recommended to improve the soil with organic matter or compost before planting;

  • landing

It takes root equally effectively in both spring and autumn planting. The roots of the seedling are placed in a small hole (depth and diameter up to 50 cm) along the root collar and covered with fertilized soil. The ground around the planted shrub is compacted, then watered abundantly;

  • pruning

After the end of planting, regardless of the season, it is necessary to shorten the main branches by a third and completely cut off the weak shoots. Subsequently, annual pruning is carried out after the end of the flowering period. Underdeveloped branches are cut out and at the same time a bushy crown is formed. If the shrub is frozen in winter, it is necessary to carry out sanitary pruning in early spring;

watering and feeding

In the first year after planting, the plant needs regular watering, the next - as needed, depending on weather conditions. It is advisable to apply top dressing or mineral fertilizers twice a year - in early spring and after flowering. You can apply complex mineral fertilizers diluted with water with irrigation, in the presence of organic matter - prepare slurry and water with diluted water in a ratio of 1 to 10 with a solution.

Thus, the crown mock-orange, being an unpretentious ornamental shrub, needs only timely thinning, periodic watering and removal of weeds from the near-trunk space. Planting and care is quite simple, does not require excessive effort and time, reproduction also does not cause much trouble.

Reproduction of chubushnik

Chubushnik is propagated by dividing the roots or, during the flowering period, by cuttings with young green bark. They are planted in a place specially prepared for them. They take longer to take root.

Also, the mock orange can be propagated by seeds, but the bushes will bloom no earlier than 5 or 8 years later. The seeds can be planted in autumn and spring, and even in winter - in prepared furrows in the snow. Such a planting is usually covered with straw or dry branches, and removed when spring arrives. The sprouts that appear are covered from the direct sun, but do not isolate from the sunlight at all. In the fall, they are sown in the prepared ridge, such as garlic. In the spring, they are usually sown in greenhouses, but first they saturate the seeds with moisture, like many seedlings:

  • in a nylon sock, dipped into water to start the germination process;
  • then placed in sawdust or another similar substance that retains moisture;
  • the swollen seeds are dried and planted, adding a little sand and manure.

There are three ways to reproduce the mock-orange:

Many people propagate shrubs with seeds that sprout quickly but are very small in size. To preserve small sprouts, they must be grown in greenhouses. Only when the sprouts reach twenty centimeters can they be planted in the beds. But here the shrub must be settled in your permanent home already in the second or third year of life. Seed propagation is effective but time-consuming. In winter, you can practice shrub propagation by cuttings. To do this, the stalk must be placed in a protected location, such as a basement. During the winter, the stalk grows stronger and grows, in the spring it is planted in the soil to be enriched with nutrients. Layers. For vegetative propagation, it is necessary to take young healthy shoots, they need to be cut off in the winter, and harvested in the fall. It is necessary to choose not thick shoots with a delicate coating, they must be young and fresh.

Preparation for wintering

In the autumn, when the plant has faded, thinning and sanitary pruning is carried out. Chubushnik is fed with potassium-phosphorus fertilizer, and the surface of the soil around the bush is sprinkled with a rather thick layer of mulch (sawdust or peat).

Wintering

You do not need to cover the shrub for the winter. If some shoots are damaged by severe frost, then after pruning in the spring, the bush will grow again. In winter, there is no need to care for the shrub.

Views

Most of the natural species of chubushnik, and there are about 50 of them, are representatives of the temperate zone, although no more than 4-5 are found in large numbers in Russian gardens. Despite the abundance of flowering varietal material, semi-wild plants with small simple flowers adequately occupy their niche and are in no hurry to give it up. Among their advantages are natural endurance and vitality, adaptability to cold climates, annual and long flowering, rich aroma.

  • Common mock-orange is a multi-stemmed, vigorous shrub, in its adult form forms a spreading fountain 3-4 m high. It opens the flowering period of garden jasmines. The flowers are simple, white with a light cream shade, fragrant. Among the advantages of the species is winter hardiness (up to -25⁰ C). The genotype of the plant formed the basis for many varieties, the first of which was the Virginian or Virginian mock-orange.
  • Ch. Large-flowered came to Russia more than two hundred years ago. As the name suggests, the main advantage is the large snow-white flowers, although the aroma is weaker than that of C. ordinary. It will bloom two weeks later, but the outfit does not drop for almost a month.
  • Ch. Fluffy is unusual with a narrow crown shape with vertically growing shoots. The flowers are medium-sized, with a faint aroma, more bell-shaped in shape than others. Differs in an abundance of inflorescences located not only at the top, but also along the entire length of the shoots of past years. Blooms almost all of July.
  • Chubushnik is a crown welcome guest in the gardens of the Moscow region, where it is more often represented by dwarf and variegated forms. In its natural form, it is also good - slender, spreading, the flowers are quite large (up to ø4.5 cm), with a creamy shade, they smell delicious. Withstands low temperatures (-25⁰C), in case of freezing, quickly recovers.
  • Small-leaved - a low (up to 1.5 m) shrub, during flowering completely covered with small flowers smelling of strawberries with notes of pineapple. It formed the basis of many Lemoine varieties.

Note! Sometimes Lemoine's chubushniki are distinguished as a separate species. This is a group of varieties and hybrids, bred by the French company Lemoine on the basis of wild plants - C. ordinary, small-leaved, etc. It is represented by a large assortment with double and semi-double flowers.

The use of chubushniki in design and the best partners

In the design of the garden, chubushniks are used:

  • as one of the main landscape and romantic shrubs;
  • as the main summer flowering shrub;
  • as a soloist against the background of undersized compositions and lawns;
  • as a background plant;
  • as a visual center of blooming compositions;
  • in mixborders;
  • in classic flower beds with a play of height;
  • in front gardens and parterre plantings;
  • in the design of rockeries, alpine slides, reservoirs and water bodies (undersized varieties);
  • in a regular style (non-flowering varieties "Gnome" and "Dwarf" look like green buttons and trimmed spheres);
  • to create hedges (both monospecific and complex, landscape and strict);
  • for decorating resting places and near terraces, gazebos, pergolas as a fragrant and picturesque accent;
  • to mask unsightly areas and communications;
  • to create voluminous "wild" compositions;
  • in ensembles with a continuous flowering relay.

The best partners for chubushnikov: all flowering shrubs from spiraea and weigela to scumpia, ornamental apple, lilac and hydrangea, woody with an unusual crown and decorative leaves (maples, turf, hazel). In flower beds and ridges, it is perfectly combined with decorative deciduous and beautifully flowering perennials and annuals.

Pest and disease control

Chubushniki are considered resistant garden plants. Diseases on them practically do not occur. But specific pests can cause a lot of trouble on weakened plants. Spider mites, green leafy weevils and bean aphids are found on mock-mushrooms. It is better to deal with problems first with biological preparations (herbs, infusions, broths), and in the absence of a result, apply systemic fungicides.

Use in landscape design

Chubushnik is planted both in single plantings and in groups. It looks beautiful in combination with other ornamental shrubs (rose hips, lilacs), roses and conifers. Chubushnik is effective in the background of a flower bed with perennials. Low-growing and dwarf varieties are planted in rockeries and rock gardens, as a tapeworm on the lawn, as well as in artificial reservoirs. Chubushnik bushes are used for the construction of hedges. Chubushnik is also popular for landscaping city streets and parks.

The unusually beautiful flowering and pleasant aroma of the mock-orange made it a favorite among gardeners, especially since it is quite easy to grow it.

My strawberry beds have been around for ten years. Naturally, I renew the bushes. Earlier, when May and June were dry, I removed from my "plantation" two buckets of delicious berries and another half a bucket of berries covered with gray rot. If the beginning of summer was rainy, then I got two buckets of gray rot and only half a bucket of ripe strawberries. It's a shame to share the harvest with some kind of rot! I started an attack on this byaka. So, step by step - why my strawberries never get sick with gray rot.

For the vast majority of my acquaintances, the idea of "don't dig" sounds completely out of the ordinary. But to be honest, my husband (also of old agro-technical training) looks with pain at the not dug up beds. Although everything grows and bears fruit on them. Therefore, in the spring, I allow him to dig something up, so as not to radically break his worldview. Gradually we learn: drastic changes in habits are not for everyone. I will share my "no shovel" farming experience.

With mushrooms, you can cook an endless number of not only delicious, but also nutritious dishes, mushrooms are dried and canned for the winter. It is not surprising that closer to autumn amateurs and professionals of "quiet hunting" go out en masse to pick mushrooms in the nearest (and not so) forest. At the same time, the number of poisoning by these gifts of the forest is sharply increasing. How to protect yourself from trouble by going to the forest for mushrooms, and how not to become a victim of low-quality mushrooms, we will tell in the article.

As a child, I was delighted with a fairy tale where the main character cleverly hid from the pursuit. He stuck the twigs from the bush into the ground, and a dense, impenetrable green forest immediately grew behind him. I've been experimenting with twigs since I was four. So, summer cuttings are a great opportunity to get a young seedling of the desired variety. The procedure is simple, quick and almost always it is possible even for beginners. Unsuccessful cuttings are associated with an obvious disregard for its basic principles.

Strawberry Pectin Jam is quick and easy to prepare. Apple pectin (pectin powder) is commercially obtained from apple pomace. Pectin is added to many common products - to the filling for sweets, ketchup, marshmallows, marshmallows and marmalade. At home, pectin is used to make jam or jam as a thickener. The addition of pectin powder can significantly reduce the cooking time, which means that more vitamins are saved.

No matter how modest a summer cottage or a personal plot is, there is always a place for cucumbers. Experienced housewives will definitely choose the time to spin several jars of their cucumbers for the winter. Moreover, with minimal care and adherence to agricultural technology, an excellent harvest can be grown. At the same time, only organic fertilizers can be used as top dressing. What they are, how to cook them at home and use them correctly, you will learn from this article.

Pelargonium "Pinto Scarlet Star F1" is distinguished by early and abundant flowering, has large flowers with a gradient color from coral at the edges to white in the center, which look very beautiful against the background of emerald leaves. Pelargonium pleases the eye for a very long time: plant breeders note that flowering continues until the very cold. Tall (up to 40 cm) bushes are suitable for planting in flower beds, flowerpots and balcony boxes.

Among the plants that came to us from the Latin American rain forests, the magnificent walking iris is far from their most modest representative. Due to its thermophilicity, it remains an indoor culture for countries with severe winters. Without losing at all its rather large size, the indoor neomarika looks elegant and very exotic. Flowers that can compete with orchids are a worthy reward for the special conditions that will have to be created for this plant.

Tomatoes "under the snow" are delicious and beautiful preparations from tomatoes for the winter, which got their name due to their resemblance to glass snow balls. In this recipe, I will show you how to make pickled cherry tomatoes with garlic and dill. Finely chopped garlic plays the role of snow in the marinade filling. If you gently shake a jar of pickles or turn it upside down, the garlic will spin in a dizzying whirlwind, no worse than artificial snowflakes in a glass ball.

Of the soil fertilizers, the highest calcium content, but inaccessible, is possessed by lime fertilizers - limestone and dolomite flour (of natural origin), conversion calcium carbonate, waste from the production of nitrogen fertilizers, but more pure in composition than previous products. The action of these fertilizers is very slow. Usually, liming is carried out in the fall, so that part of the applied fertilizers dissolves in the soil and becomes available to plants in spring.

It seems that only yesterday was spring. But now summer is at its zenith, mid-July has come. At this time, all plants spend a lot of energy, micro- and macroelements to maintain the complex processes that take place inside them. And in order to provide them with violent flowering, improve the taste of the fruits and help to winter better, it is necessary to apply fertilizers in a timely manner and correctly, that is, to carry out multi-purpose fertilizing. In this case, the nitrogen in them must be minimized.

Any gardener knows - there is no more tedious and thankless occupation than weed control. Too much effort and time is spent on weeding by hand or with the help of hoes and flat cutters, and the result, if it pleases, is not long. You will not have time to go through the site to the end, and weed vegetation is already reappearing on the weeded out areas. And this is on an already inhabited area, but what can we say about virgin soil! How quickly and for a long time to get rid of weeds, we will tell in the article.

Summer is not only the summer cottage season, sun, vacation, warm sea, but also fresh vegetables, berries and fruits. However, today, when looking at the counters of the market, the question arises more and more often: is it possible to eat so early watermelons, melons, cucumbers, corn, tomatoes and so on that could not yet ripen in the open field? Are early vegetables and fruits dangerous? Do early watermelons and melons belong to the category of nitrate products that can cause poisoning?

We will tell you the rules for planting and caring for a mock-orange in the open field. We describe in detail when and how best to plant garden jasmine.

We consider caring for a plant in the garden: watering, feeding, pruning, flowering, preparing for winter, as well as diseases and pests.

How is it correct: mock orange or garden jasmine?

Chubushnik belongs to the Hortensia family, and jasmine belongs to the Olive family. At the same time, the shrubs are quite similar to each other, especially with a sweet and strong aroma, which is why confusion arises.

In Russia and the CIS countries, chubushnik is often called garden jasmine, but real jasmine is a thermophilic plant (subtropical zone) and freezes in harsh climates. Some of its species are successfully grown here at home or in greenhouses (Indian, sambac, etc.).

Our planting guidelines and outdoor care tips are designed for the chubushnik or the popular “garden jasmine”.

  • These names are used in the article as synonyms, since under these names one and the same plant is hidden.

In Russian gardens, the most often grown mock-orange (ordinary), virginal, hybrid winter-hardy varieties of Lemoine mock-orange and Nikolai Kuzmich's Vekhov selection.

Chubushnik: planting in open ground

For the excellent development and flowering of the plant, the planting site, soil and potting mix, planting distance and planting depth play an important role.

This is a kind of foundation that provides comfortable conditions for growing chubushnik in the open field for the next 25-35 years.

Pick-up location

The plant is best suited to a quiet place that should be well lit, especially in the first half of the day, but light partial shade at noon is also allowed. It is best to plant mock orange on the south, southeast and southwest sides.

Garden jasmine is able to grow in the shade, but in this case flowering will be much weaker, it will stretch out and acquire a less beautiful appearance.

Do not plant shrubs in places where rainwater or melt water accumulates, as well as where groundwater is closer than 150 cm from the surface of the earth.

Soil and acidity

Chubushnik loves fertile land with high air and moisture permeability. It is well suited to light and medium loamy soils rich in humus. At the same time, garden jasmine is able to grow in poor soil, but then the development and flowering of the bush will be weaker.

Heavy clayey soils are poorly suited; in this case, more powerful drainage and a lighter soil mixture are required. On sandy loam soils, on the contrary, you can do without drainage, and it is better to replace part of the sand with garden soil.

The optimum level of soil acidity for mock-orange is pH 6.5-7.5 (close to neutral).

Soil mix

Garden jasmine substrate options.

  1. Leafy land, humus, sod (garden) land, peat in equal parts is a universal option.
  2. Sod (garden) soil, humus (compost) and sand - 3: 2: 1. Well suited for clay soils and chernozem.
  3. Humus, black soil - 1: 1. Preferred for sandy soils.
  • It is advisable to add one glass of wood ash or two tablespoons of superphosphate to any soil substrate.

Landing distance

Large bushes and trees - 2.5-3 m

Planting depth

When planting, the root collar of the seedling should be approximately at ground level. The maximum depth is 2-3 cm, otherwise there is a high risk of developing rot.

How to plant garden jasmine correctly? Instructions

  1. Dig a planting hole: depth and width - 50-60 cm. At the bottom of the hole, make a 10-15 cm drainage layer of rubble, gravel or sand.
  2. Sprinkle in some potting soil. Place the seedling in the center of the hole so that the base of the bush is about level with the ground.
  3. Gradually fill the planting hole with soil mixture and compact it so that there are no voids.
  4. Trim all shoots about 30% of their length (a couple of buds to a strong bud). Pour 10-15 liters of water into the tree trunk circle. Pour a 3-4 cm layer of peat, bark or sawdust on top to keep the root ball moist longer.

Rules and Tips

  • Plant a chubushnik in cloudy weather or in the evening so that it takes root better.
  • It is advisable to dig the planting hole and fill it with soil mixture 3-4 weeks before planting.
  • If the seedling has damaged roots, remove them and treat the cut with charcoal powder.

When is it better to plant a mock-orange in spring or autumn?

Garden jasmine is best planted in spring (April) or autumn (September - October).

A seedling with an open root system can be planted only in the spring before the leaves bloom, otherwise it will die, and in the fall from September 10 to October 15. Seedlings in containers can be planted throughout the growing season.

These dates for planting a mock-orange are also suitable for gardeners of the Moscow region, the Leningrad region, the Urals and Siberia.

Chubushnik transplant

The garden jasmine shrub is relatively easy to transplant at any age. The optimal time for transplanting adult bushes is from late August to mid-October, but it is also possible in the spring in April.

  1. Water the chubushnik abundantly the day before digging, so that it is easier to transfer it with a clod of earth, and it will stock up on nutrients.
  2. Cut off young shoots of the current year (autumn) or last year by 30-40% (spring).
  3. Carefully dig out the bush, plant it together with a lump of earth in a new place and pour 10-15 liters of water.

Chubushnik: outdoor care in spring, summer and autumn

The shrub is quite unpretentious to care for, drought-resistant and hardy to unfavorable external factors.

However, to get the maximum decorative effect, garden jasmine must be properly cared for.

Watering

Moisture for a chubushnik is of great importance. With its lack, the bush may not bloom. Water your garden jasmine regularly, especially in hot and dry weather, to prevent the leaves from drooping (loss of turgor).

The maximum demand for moisture is from April to July, when the bush is actively growing, preparing for flowering and blooming. During this time, water approximately every 7-12 days with 15-30 liters of water.

In the spring, before flowering, it is advisable to spray the shrub with warm and soft water. For young plants, it is useful to add growth stimulants to the water ("Zircon", "Epin Extra" and others).

After the first watering in the spring, mulch the near-trunk circle with a 3-4 cm layer of peat to retain moisture in the soil.

Loosening the soil

During the spring - summer, it is necessary to loosen the ground 2-4 times by 4-6 cm in depth. Also, remove weeds in a timely manner - they take away macro- and microelements from the chubushnik.

Top dressing and fertilizers

For the first two years after planting, there is no need to feed the chubushnik with mineral fertilizers. Garden jasmine needs additional nutrients for abundant and lush flowering.

  1. In early April (before the leaves bloom), dissolve 15 grams of carbamide (urea), 15 grams of potassium sulfate and 30 grams of superphosphate in 10 liters of water and pour over the bush. Or water the plant with mullein infusion - 1:10.
  2. After 3-4 weeks (beginning - mid-May), repeat the feeding.
  3. Immediately after flowering, scatter 20-25 grams of superphosphate (1 tablespoon) and 10-15 grams of potassium sulfate per 1 m2 over the surface of the earth.

2nd option

  1. Before flowering (late April - early May), scatter two tablespoons of nitrophoska and a glass of wood ash over the surface.
  2. During flowering and immediately after it, pour the solution: for 10 liters of water 20-25 g of superphosphate (1 tbsp. Spoon) and 10-15 g of potassium.

Advice

Instead of mineral fertilizers during and after flowering, wood ash can be used. To do this, pour a glass of ash with 10 liters of water and leave for two days, and then pour the shrub into the trunk circle.

Bloom

Garden jasmine is most attractive when the fragrant flowers open up. It is for its pleasant, sweetish and powerful aroma that most flower growers love it.

The smell of chubushnik has a beneficial effect on the human psyche and raises the mood. The plant usually blooms in the 3rd year after planting.

Blossoming time of the chubushnik

The flowering period of garden jasmine depends on its type and variety. In the conditions of the Moscow region, the crown mock-orange and garden forms based on it are the first to bloom: golden (aureus), dwarf and variegated. They bloom almost immediately after (early June).

In the first two weeks of June, the small-leaved, thin-leaved mock-orange, Shrenka, blooms. In early - mid-July, odorless, grayish, broad-leaved and fluffy chubushnik begins to bloom (it blooms later than everyone else).

The duration of flowering is on average 20-25 days, in a shady place a little longer. Schrenk's mock-orange blooms the longest, and, for example, Gordon's mock-orange is able to bloom a second time in the fall.

Why is the mock-orange not blooming? What to do?

Garden jasmine may not bloom in some situations. The most common reasons are: lack of lighting (growing in the shade), lack of moisture or nutrients (watering, feeding), unsuccessful wintering (freezing of annual shoots), excessive pruning in the spring or too deep planting.

Perhaps the mock-orange does not bloom due to its age, especially if you grew it from seeds (7-8th year) or from cuttings (4-5th year).

Correct pruning of chubushnik: in spring, after flowering, in autumn

Garden jasmine needs annual pruning to form a decorative crown shape, especially vigorous species and varieties. Otherwise, it will thicken with young shoots and grow ugly.

Sanitary pruning in spring

Before the buds awaken (late March - early April), remove weak and damaged shoots growing inside the bush. If you wish, you can shorten a few of the strongest branches, but proceed with caution as over-pruning can result in no flowering this year.

Sanitary pruning can be done at any time of the year. Complete formation of the crown of the bush will be done after the mock-orange has faded.

Anti-aging pruning

About once every 2-4 years, it is necessary to rejuvenate the plant. In early vein at the garden jasmine, cut off all shoots older than 10-12 years at the very base of the bush ("on a stump").

Due to such pruning, the crown of the garden jasmine will rejuvenate and stimulate powerful flowering and growth. New strong shoots will bloom next summer.

"Refreshing" an old bush

A very old or neglected bush is easier to rejuvenate by cardinal pruning.

  1. At the end of April, cut down all the trunks at ground level, and cut 3-4 of the healthiest ones at a height of 35-40 cm. Treat the cuts with garden pitch, and spread a 4-5 cm layer of humus around the bush and dig a little soil (6-8 cm) ...
  2. Water the mock-orange regularly and abundantly in the summer. It is also advisable to feed the mullein infusion 1-2 times.
  3. In the fall, new shoots will appear from the dormant buds, but in the spring, 3-4 of the strongest ones will need to be left, and the rest will be completely removed. These most developed shoots are the basis of a young shrub.

Formative pruning of chubushnik after flowering

Formative pruning of garden jasmine is best done immediately after flowering (mid-June) so as not to disturb flowering, as it blooms on last year's shoots.

  1. First, remove any faded buds. If no pruning was done in the spring or there is a need, then completely remove all weak and damaged branches.
  2. Then trim the shoots of the current year to the last year's growth (green section of the branch to the lignified part).
    By October, a new growth with lateral shoots will have time to appear on these branches, on which flowers will appear next spring.
    If you want to reduce the height of the bush, then cut off all or the longest shoots below the growth zone.
  3. Also prune 4-5 year old shoots growing inside the bush and bare, weakly flowering, to thin it out. And if the bush is very thick, then cut off 20-25% of the old trunks at the base.

Pruning chubushnik in autumn

You cannot prune young shoots of garden jasmine in the fall if you want it to bloom next year. In autumn, if necessary, you can carry out sanitary pruning and thinning of the bush (growing inward and weak shoots).

Preparing for the winter chubushnik

Most varieties of the plant are distinguished by good winter hardiness, especially of domestic selection. Adult chubushnik bushes do not need winter shelter, and it is advisable to mulch specimens up to 2 years old with a 4-5 cm layer of peat or pine needles.

If the tops of annual shoots freeze on an adult garden jasmine in winter, it will still bloom, and by pruning in the spring it is easy to restore the crown of the bush.

In the conditions of the Moscow region, the Leningrad region, Siberia and the Urals, it is better to plant winter-hardy varieties.

Pests and diseases

Chubushnik is rarely affected by pests or diseases, but it is important to regularly inspect the shrub for their presence.
