Take the material that will serve as the upholstery for your chair. It must be placed on the top of the seat and attached to the bottom using special buttons. Buttons with plastic caps are ideal. To assemble a stool from prepared parts, the legs are marked at the locations where the frames and stiffeners are installed. In accordance with the markings, holes are drilled for self-tapping screws, after which the parts are fastened together. For additional adhesion, glue is used.

The stool seat boards are installed on the finished frame, which are also fixed with self-tapping screws.

At the final stage, the product is varnished or painted. If desired, the seat can be made soft by placing a piece of foam rubber and covering it with leatherette on top.

Plywood stool

If, after renovation, a large sheet of plywood with a thickness of 9-15 mm remains in the apartment, it can be turned into a small stool, which can be useful in the garage or while fishing. The advantage is that it creates a lightweight, collapsible stool that is convenient to take on trips. The chair is made according to the following scheme.

Two U-shaped posts are cut out of a sheet of plywood. The width of the legs is about 5 cm, the upper crossbar is 10-15 cm thick. The length of the legs is chosen arbitrarily, depending on personal preferences. A protrusion 15 cm long and 2.5 cm high is left on the top surface of each rack.

A cut is made in the central part of the transverse strip of each rack. The cutout should be in the lower and upper parts so that the supporting elements are connected to each other during assembly.

Two identical squares are cut out to serve as a seat. A cross-shaped cut is made in the part that will be installed on the legs, corresponding in length to the protrusion left on the posts.

The stool is assembled as follows. The racks are joined with grooves crosswise. The seat parts are glued together and installed on the seat groove.

Folding stool

A folding wooden stool is a rather complex, but more functional and practical design. It is suitable for cottages, fishing and city apartments. The legs are drilled through the middle. There will be a pin running through here, connecting the posts together and simplifying the folding process.

When the blanks are cut, you can start assembling. Markings are made on the inside of the seat for installing hinges. The outer legs usually have a wide distance between them and are located closer to the edge of the seat. The internal racks are placed a little further from the center, closer to each other. After marking, loops are screwed to the legs, then the posts are connected to the seat.

The structure is brought into the assembled position, a pin is passed into the drilled groove, which is fixed on both sides with nuts. The finished chair is varnished or painted.

Children's bench

If you want to treat all parts with a protective stain or impregnation, it is better to do this before starting assembly. However, when using a stool in the house, the protection can be ignored - natural wood without treatment is more environmentally friendly.

The next model is created not so much for sitting, but for another function. It plays the role of a bedside or sofa table, on which you can put a light item. The wicker seat is unlikely to support a sitting person.

The diagonal weaving technique is clearly visible in the photo: the contrasting cord is not passed in a checkerboard pattern, but with a regular indentation in one direction or another. By experimenting, you can create a unique pattern in the form of braids, chevrons or oblique stripes.

The wooden frame must be prepared in advance - taken from an old stool or made with your own hands. Any decorative cord or twine will do. In this case, to create a contrasting pattern, we used a red and white synthetic cord.

On the one hand, such a product can be made based on your personal preferences (material, size, shape, etc.), but on the other hand, a do-it-yourself stool made of wood is a long and labor-intensive process.

Stool design features

Different materials can be used to make a stool, but most often craftsmen take ready-made timber, waste wood or ordinary. These are cheaper and more reliable materials that are used in the furniture industry. Working with wood is not difficult, so if you have a ready-made drawing, you can easily make a kitchen stool.

In the classical sense, a stool is several elements securely connected to each other. These include:

• stool base having a square shape (sometimes the base of the structure is round);
• durable legs in quantities of 3 or 4 pieces;
• fasteners, which connect the legs of the product. They are called kings;
• sitting having rounded edges.

For convenience, the surface of the seat is covered with thick fabric or leather. Such stools will look more presentable.

A stool is a universal piece of furniture, because if desired, it can be hidden in a closet, under or taken to another room. A stool can also replace a coffee table or a small one. But for a handmade product to be truly functional and of high quality, it must meet several requirements.

1. Structural strength. In the process of making a stool, all wooden elements must be fixed using high-quality wood glue. A durable product will be able to withstand even the largest people and will not fall apart.
2. Correct sizes and proportions. The design of the stools should correspond to the size and height of family members. For example, a stool for children should be ideally selected so that they can place their feet on the floor or on a special crossbar.
3. Compactness and convenience of a wooden product. You need to seriously think about the choice of upholstery material. It is desirable that the seats be soft, so materials such as leatherette, leather or velor are better suited for upholstery.

Note! If you are going to make a stool for the first time, then it is recommended to choose simple designs first. But after some time, after gaining the necessary experience, you can begin to manufacture more complex products.

Material selection

If you do not take into account glass and plastic models made in designer style, then wooden stools are the best option. It is advisable to use oak, cedar or yew, but budget types of wood, such as alder or pine, are also suitable. Craftsmen from other countries successfully use jute, bamboo, hemp or even stones to make furniture. But if you choose the most pliable material, then it is, of course, wood. The finished pieces of furniture are convenient, comfortable and extremely beautiful.

If desired, you can combine different materials, for example, the upper part of the stool is made of wood, and the legs are made of metal. But to make beautiful and durable forged legs, you need to be a real master of hot forging. Such products will decorate a summer terrace, corridor or living room.

The upper part of the stool (seat) must be covered with high-quality and soft material, for example, faux fur, textiles or even sisal ropes. Although a more aristocratic and practical option is genuine leather. With it, the finished stool will look more expensive and attractive. Children's stool puzzle

A great way to decorate a child's room is to make small stools in the shape of a puzzle. If you make several of these products at once, they can eventually be combined into one large bench. Below are step-by-step instructions for this process.

Step 1. Prepare supplies to create a stool. We need boards for making the top part and beams for the legs.

Step 2. Place one board on the table and draw large puzzles on its surface. A simple pencil is used for this purpose.

Step 3. Place the marked board on the second one and, aligning them, screw them together with self-tapping screws. To create children's stools, it is not necessary to use wood - plywood can also work.

Step 4. Screw the screws so that they do not stick out from above. This will make it easier to carry out further work.

Step 5. Cut the material into several pieces - this will make it easier to cut out the puzzles. You can cut with a regular saw, but with a jigsaw all the work can be done in a few minutes.

Step 6. Carefully trim away any unnecessary parts of the wood, following the marks made in pencil.

Step 7 Sand the cut areas to make the surface smoother.

Step 8. Sand the cut out puzzles with sandpaper. This is necessary to eliminate all irregularities and chips. Upon completion of work, carefully inspect the product. Repeat the procedure if necessary.

Step 9. Drill holes for the legs. They must be the same so that the finished chair stands level. Therefore, if you twisted two boards together, now you need to unscrew the top part of the chair and make a through hole in it.

Step 10. Connect the top and bottom parts of the future structure again. Use old screws for this.

Step 11. Make marks on the blanks for the stool legs. It is advisable to make the stools low, so a leg length of 30 cm will be enough.

Step 12. Using a jigsaw, carefully cut off the legs and sand the cut areas.

Step 13. Make the first two crossbars, securing them with wood glue.

Step 14. Mark, drill holes and glue the ledgers in the next two crossbars. All the steps performed are similar, so you just need to follow the workflow shown in the photo.

Step 15. Once the legs are ready, glue them to the base and press down with something heavy for a while. Good wood glue needs 3-5 minutes to completely harden.

Step 16. Using the same technology, make several stools at once, and then check them for evenness. If necessary, use a sander or plane. Try to connect all the puzzles together, thereby getting one.

Step 17 Paint the stools. Since they are for children, it is advisable to paint them in different colors. Moreover, it is not necessary to paint the legs - just coat them with varnish.

Step 18. Wait a little while for the paint to dry. Now the puzzle stools are ready. You can enjoy the result of the work done.

Stylish wooden stool

After practicing with simple types of stools, you can try yourself in making more complex designs. These include a “slat” stool, detailed manufacturing instructions for which are given below.

Step 1. Make a sketch of all parts of the future structure on a sheet of whatman paper. There are only two such details.

Step 2. Using a utility knife or regular scissors, carefully cut out the drawn parts.

Step 3. Place the cut out templates on a large sheet of plywood and trace them. There should be a total of 11 thin parts, and 2 large structures.

Step 4. Carefully cut out the drawn parts using a jigsaw. To cut out the lower parts of the groove, it is recommended to use a regular jigsaw, as it is more convenient.

Step 5. As a result, you should have the following elements. Once all the parts are cut out, you can proceed to the next steps.

Step 6. Level the surface of the crossbars. To do this, they need to be folded together and secured with a clamp. File them first and then use sandpaper. The treated surface should be as flat and smooth as possible.

Step 7. Start assembling the finished elements. To do this, use a small hammer and spacers. If necessary, treat the joints of wooden elements with wood glue. This will increase the strength of the structure.

Step 8. Try to install each of the parts on the same level as the others so that the structure looks even and of high quality. This is an important part of the work, so there is no need to rush when assembling wooden elements.

Step 9. As a result, you should end up with a stool like this. Cover it with varnish, let it dry, and then use it for its intended purpose. This product will fit perfectly into any type of interior, so it can be placed in the living room, kitchen or country house.

All the stool drawings below are just examples. The process of their manufacture is not accompanied by precise calculations, as is required when designing load-bearing parts of any structure or those that are in one way or another subject to significant loads.

Therefore, below is only a recommended algorithm for making a stool yourself, that is, general instructions. Which model to make is up to you, dear reader, to decide. After all, it is clear that you can build anything with your own hands. The main thing is that the resulting sample fully corresponds to its purpose, which, again, is determined by the master.

Choosing a stool design

The given drawings and drawings clearly show which stool options are most often assembled for domestic use.

A more original option is a stool and a bedside table at the same time.

There is only one explanation - the more complex the configuration, the more time it will take to make the stool. But this is not the main thing. For various shaped elements, you will have to look for the appropriate tool, or even resort to the services of a person (or workshop) who has a machine, cutters, and the like for personal use.

A simple example: to make curly cuts, exactly along the radii, with just a hand jigsaw you can only make it out of plywood. And it is not a fact that the result will be satisfactory. If the legs are planned to be made from a solid board, then if you have only the simplest household tools, it is better not to try - this requires many years of experience in processing wooden blanks.

Selection of materials

The fact that you will have to work with wood is understandable. But what kind of products can you use?

Solid wood in the form of boards and beams is suitable for the manufacture of any parts of the stool: seat (1), fastening bars (2), crossbars (3), legs, drawers and the legs themselves (4). A more simplified version is with a cover made of multilayer plywood. By the way, this solution has the advantage that it is easier to laminate the furniture panel (another name for this structural part) and, if necessary, replace it.

Type of plywood

It must be moisture-repellent. Water will definitely get on the stool during its operation. FBS products are the best in all respects, but their cost is such that not everyone will want to purchase such plywood. In everyday life, as a rule, products of the FSF and FK brands are used. To save money, you can buy cheaper sheets of these series, category Ш1.

This means that only one side of the sample was subjected to grinding. The condition of the second (wrong, back) stool seat does not matter. There is also a multilayer one with ready-made lamination on sale, but it will naturally cost more.

Wood species and material type

Let's start with plywood. If the stool will be located indoors, then the FC brand is better suited. It is less moisture resistant, but the glue used to hold the veneer together is not so toxic. But for this reason, FSF is recommended mainly for external use. In addition, its moisture resistance is higher. So if the stool will always be in the utility room, garden or somewhere else outside the building, this is the best option.

But you can write quite a lot about the choice of wood. Without going into the specifics of the different species, the author recommends using larch for the stool. Firstly, it is easy to process it with your own hands. Secondly, the cost of the material is quite reasonable. Thirdly, unlike many other species of coniferous trees in this price range, larch becomes even stronger when wet. Therefore, if you handle the stool carefully, it will last for decades. Fourthly, you will not need to constantly treat it with preparations against decay and biological pests. Other inexpensive options are acacia and ash.

Having chosen a specific type of wood, you should study all the features of working with it. But there are nuances, and it is this approach that guarantees that problems will not arise later. For example, does everyone know that acacia can be easily processed only after it is soaked? Dry wood from this wood is not much worse than stone in terms of hardness.

Wood moisture level

Basically, all wood must be properly dried. In construction it is prohibited to use these materials with an indicator of more than 20%. As for the stool, you don’t need to be an expert to understand that if you assemble it with your own hands from raw materials, after a while everything will have to be redone. The reason is trivial - the entire structure will “lead” after the wood shrinks.

Technology selection

There is often advice not to use tongue-and-groove joints. The main argument is complicated. But if you think about it, is this so?

In order to make grooves in the legs, the author used an electric drill with a small cutter. I first drilled holes along the marked lines, which I then combined, choosing “partitions” between them. No matter what anyone claims, this type of connection is the most reliable.

It is much easier to assemble all the elements with your own hands using self-tapping screws. The heads can be made secret and disguised. But such a design will soon begin to creak - it’s been checked. It turns out that the common element connecting the 2 workpieces is just a thin and short metal “pin” - the leg of the fastener.

Hardware can only be used as an additional (to glue-on) method of fixing parts. Elements such as corners, staples, and plates are also used for reinforcement. The master himself will understand what is more convenient for one or another version of the stool. And then, this is done mainly for bulky structures. If the product is small, then one glue is enough. Although the reader may have a different opinion, the author does not insist.

The main parts of the stool are shown in the pictures (see above). If the drawing is ready, everything else is a matter of technique.

Assembly of the structure

This is, so to speak, a preliminary installation, a kind of “browsing” of the stool. At this stage, the accuracy of all dimensions, the correct fit of parts is checked, defects are identified (if any), and so on. Here you can still redo something, improve it without unnecessary costs and loss of time.

Processing of structural elements

After checking the readiness of the entire structure for assembly, the wood is “finished” - impregnated with special compounds, dried, and so on.

• It is advisable to start work from the seat. All crossbars, support bars and the like are attached to it - depending on the model.
• Installation of legs. They can be attached directly to the lid or assembled into a separate frame, with the installation of crossbars.
• Final assembly of the entire structure.

Grinding

After the stool is mounted, it needs to be given a “marketable” appearance. How and with what to treat the surfaces is determined by the master. This is done with your own hands mainly with sandpaper or using a special attachment that is inserted into the chuck of an electric drill.

Exterior design

Here the main advisor is your own imagination. Varnish, stain, paint – there are plenty of options.

The author deliberately did not indicate what specific cross-section and length the block would be needed, did not recommend a certain thickness of plywood sheets or boards, and so on, so as not to limit the reader in any way. If the meaning of the work - where to start and how to finish - is clear, everything else is unimportant. After all, when something is done with your own hands, it is a priori implied - AS I WANT, and not someone else.
